A little bit that pops up when I am looking for various histories. I am in a busy week this week coming, but after that, I will delve into my research more and see what I can find for you. Conrad Rager, the founder of Ragersville was the man who put the noose around the neck of John Funston for the Post Boy murder. Later Rgaersville was the site of the lynching of Jeff Davis. Those were the only two lynchings in Tusc. Co. Interesting coincidence. That is probably one of the most interesting tidbits I can provide at this time until I look through my notes.

Randolph County NC Hanging 1879 Thos P. BOWMAN

Looking for information on one Thomas Pinckney/Pinkney Bowman, accused of the murder of his wife by poison in 1876/1877. I can find no record of her first name but Bowman stated her last name was "Cannon"; in fact the daughter of "Ruben/Rueben Cannon" in a newspaper interview at the time. I'm seeing trial records, as well as a photograph of Bowman's corpse which was supposedly taken in Greensboro, NC by W.P. Hughes. Additionally, a member of Bowman's household - unknown if blood relative - by the last name of "Dill/Dell/Deals" supposedly made a deathbed confession to poisoning Mrs. Bowman, years after Thomas' execution. Thomas Bowman and his wife had at least 6 children, only one of which, still a young child at the time of the execution, survived and received at least some measure of financial support through the sales of news stories. Supposedly Mr. and Mrs. Bowman are buried side by side in Rockingham County, in graves marked only by large rocks. Thomas stated he was the son of "Riley" and Susan Bowman - he may have been the grandson of one "John Anderson Bowman". It should be noted that Thomas Bowman states he was originally from "Gibbs County, GA" - but there is no record of any such county in GA, either now or in 'defunct' county listings. During Thomas' lifetime, he states that he and his wife went back and forth from the "Bowman Plantation" in Georgia and NC. Any information or leads would be deeply appreciated.

I have not seen any official documentation, only the story passed on from his step grand daughter. Before she passed away, she was the treasurer for the Dallas Genealogical Society, so I tend to trust her account.

Keep in mind, Florida was a lawless place back then and there were likely some significant obstacle to bringing the body back. If you'd like to have a feel for what life may have been like, read Killing Mister Watson by Peter Matthiessen. The events that book is based on happened just a few years later and about 100 miles away.

The exact spot, as described by my great aunt, is not far from 26.792088,-81.330678

"They buried him along the river in his boat." Of course, anything can happen, but that does sound rather unusual. Has that been confirmed by some official documentation?

What information does his death certificate yield?

Murder in Moore Haven, Florida; missing grave

I recently learned through a "family story", that my GGF was murdered in Florida. He as a farmer and trapper in Moore Haven, Florida in the early 1900s. When he did not return from trapping, his oldest son went to find him. He was found robbed and dead in his boat. They buried him along the river in his boat. Years later, my GU went to find him and move him to a proper cemetery, but, the government had moved the river and they could not find him.

Now, years later, the land is much more developed and I was wondering if someone had ever found him. And, if they did, would the body have reported to the local police? Does anyone what steps I should take now, over 100 years later? If it helps, the family story does mention a very specific place.

It's difficult to help without a name and possible location. You could try posting on the relevant newspaper board and ask for a lookup, or contact the libraries in the area in which the crime was committed and ask the research librarian for a lookup.

I have a rather large "prison" et al archive on my PC I will search. Meanwhile, try contacting the local historical society and ask if they will do a search of their archives. Many old institutional records are handed over to historical societies for safe keeping. If nothing, try the state HS and even closest, local genealogical society.

try contacting the local historical society (if no luck then try he state HS). Old institutional records many times were remanded to them for keeping. They will usually do a search for you and if found, charge per copy of doocument.

you can also try courthouse records. ask court clerk/info person what their proceedure is.

You could start with the county courthouses.

For specific information, you might get better results by posting two separate messages, one on the Jones County, Georgia, message board and the other on the Saluda County, South Carolina, board.
Re: criminal history?

It's been a while since you posted this so perhaps you have already gotten an answer and found your ancestors records. As a retired police officer I can give you a little insight on your search. Realize first that every jurisdiction may present different challenges but here are some general thoughts. He might have been arrested by any of several law enforcement agencies....perhaps a city police department, or the county Sheriff, State Police or perhaps even a federal agency (if he were in violation of federal liquor tax laws for example) If he were arrested by State, County, or local police then you should be able to find a record in one of the local courts. Many places have more than one court and you will need to check with the County Clerk to determine the number of courts and which one would most likely have been the presiding court for that sort of arrest.

Had someone come to our police department seeking information on an arrest that happened 40 or 50 or more years ago we would have had a very difficult time producing information since those records have been moved into storage and none of those old arrests were ever digitized. It would involve sorting through a lot of paperwork, If you were lucky we would have been able to find an "arrest card" in an alphabetized file. As I recall we used to purge those cards from the file if we knew the person was deceased. Saves space, but doesn't help future researchers much. Different states have different public records retention laws affecting police departments so your luck in locating information will vary from place to place.

Looking for the court records would also be a challenge for the same reasons, not knowing a year would make it especially difficult to find as you would need to search docket book indexes one year at a time and each court would have their own set of docket books. Knowing at least the year of arrest(s) would help a great deal. If he had served time in a state prison your search would be a lot easier, many states have digitized their old records and can do a search on a name pretty easily. I found a distant cousin who served time in the Nebraska state Prison in 1909 without much difficulty. I initially discovered that incident from a newspaper article I accidentally discovered. Local newspapers often record crime stories and arrests....but again you will need to have a date or at least something close in order to search through the old papers.

That would be the same, any info on the man especially how he was as a person would be appreciated. i gladly share info. I have to look through my records to find what I have, I had laid it aside to finish some other works, but I wrote a screenplay and been trying to sell it. I am doing the book, but the book is much more complicated. I am obsessive about facts and details, and that makes it hard to loosen up and just write. These people were my ancestors and friends of past relatives, so I have a special connection to them. I hoped to uncover pictures of these people, but only got one of Peter Steitz and it is quite fuzzy. Some relatives of the Wingeiers are all blonde and light eyes. And I know what Jeff Davis looked like basically. The rest are mysteries. I am working hard to answer the question as to how these deeply religious, hard working peaceful farmers could do this act. I think I have it, but trying to portray it, is a challenge. John Shank being in his position surely had to be present as he was one of the men trying to calm the crowd and make them stop, which makes me wonder why he was charged. Other than the coat evidence, of course.

Shepfer was only was went through full trial, Wingeier released on lack of evidence to hold trial. I think they knew at that point no conviction could be obtained. John Shank also released along with Peter Steitz. The evidence for Shank was a bloody coat, but he claimed the coat was worn by someone else. Although it seems he didn't reveal the who the someone else was or it is lost in records. The cover up of the event really took a toll on the records, but I collected many over this past year. John Shank doesn't have a whole lot of written history, so I never got a good feel for what he was like, as a man. The Wingeiers were very active in that area for cheese making and social events. A little rowdy as well, but noting bad really. Good humor type rowdy. I researched hard to find why these particular 4 were brought to charges when around 30 were present for the deed. I think I have found a couple good theories, but nothing concrete. I guess I have to hope someone comes forward with an old diary or something and finally exposes that fact as the records have disappeared from the court books and historical society for that period of time.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how I might start researching criminal records from SC and VA in 1929?

I recently stumbled across a newspaper article from 1929 about an ancestor being arrested in York, SC on charges that he escaped from a prison in Richmond, VA. Both that he had been in prison, and that he had escaped were news to me and now I am curious to see if I can track down any further information about the case, and why he had been in jail originally. Does anyone have any advice on where to start in finding criminal records from that far back? This is a new area of research for me!

His name was Frank Garrison, the article appeared in the Dec 30, 1929 issue of the Rock Hill Herald, (Rock Hill, SC) which is available at the Google News Archives.

Thanks in advance!
