Does anyone have a suggestion on how I might start researching criminal records from SC and VA in 1929?

I recently stumbled across a newspaper article from 1929 about an ancestor being arrested in York, SC on charges that he escaped from a prison in Richmond, VA. Both that he had been in prison, and that he had escaped were news to me and now I am curious to see if I can track down any further information about the case, and why he had been in jail originally. Does anyone have any advice on where to start in finding criminal records from that far back? This is a new area of research for me!

His name was Frank Garrison, the article appeared in the Dec 30, 1929 issue of the Rock Hill Herald, (Rock Hill, SC) which is available at the Google News Archives.
