Records of prisoners at Sing-Sing (Ossining) Prison - Ideas?

Hello,
we have a much-repeated family legend that one of my male ancestors "did time" at Sing- Sing.

Unfortunately, I have no idea who he was, when he was there, or how this transpired, since we´re from England...

I know that the prison offers searches for a fee, but since I have literally no information to start from, this does not seem to be an option.

I do have a few possible candidates in mind, though, so I wonder whether there are any sites than can be browsed, ideally for free?

As I live in Germany I have no possibility of visiting institutions in person.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!

My husband was told his grandfather served time in Sing-Sing twice. He was on a standard looking New York census at Ossining as an inmate for one offense no other data found. A discharge record for another offense was found out of random luck. He kept using a new spelling of his last name and lied about his age on both of these records (family confirm this as fact). The last record states charged with robbery, his sentence, an alias and who picked him up (wife) along with many other facts. Looking at the next page, was a man that did the same crime, at the same location and date. My guess they were partners. My hopes are that more information can discovered using this alias. Happy hunting!
