Just discovered your post - 6 1/2 years late. Would love to hear more about your Henry Levi. I'm descended from his nephew Judah - and have lots of info on him, the trial and followup. The ship actually sailed 12 Dec 1771.

This book contains info about the Justitia as well as numerous other convict ships.
"Bound with an Iron Chain: The Untold Story of How the British Transported 50,000 Convicts to Colonial America"
(Google eBook) by Anthony Vaver.
This book has a couple of pages that relay the story and fate of the Justitia. Includes the harsh treatment of Captain Bond towards the convicts. Book also contains a paragraph on what happened to Captain Bond in the US for being found guilty for the numerous deaths on the ship due to the mistreatment of the prisoners.
*
*
This website has a search option to look up the proceedings of those convicted along with their sentences that indicate how many years they would have to serve after being transported to the US:
http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/index.jsp

Hi Marcia,
I've found the documents holding the names of the convicts transported on board the ship Justitia in 1766: You need to request details for your ancestor and they then send them to you in the post.

If you go to http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk and key in the item reference T 1/450/96-101.

Or, try this link:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycatalogu...

I hope that helps and that you find him on the register.

Best wishes,

Cathy

Check out the name of the book below.
I found the book in my local library.

The book gives the names of the passengers, name of ship, and where they were transported from in England, month and year of arrival, and name of the Captain of the Justitia for the ancestor I was researching, William Westbrook.
The date at the top of the page is 1718 - 1776.

William Westbrook was transported from London to Virginia by the Justitia, Capt. Neil Gillis, in January 1772. (PRO: T1/483/47). On the same ship were men from Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent and London.

The Kings Passengers to Maryland and Virginia. Westminister, MD: by Peter Wilson Coldham.
Family Line Publications, 1997. 450p.

Please go to James Harvey May in Megan's Family tree, this is a tree I have been working on for my family with my daughter as the home person. I found an article on the net from the Va gazette 1772 announcing the Justitia arriving in port in Leedstown. It is attached to James Harvey May, the same paper had an announcement of the sale of the contents of the ship, but did not list the names.
I'm attaching to this message.

I am still searching for a list from this trip, have not located it yet.

Lana, I also had an ancestor aboard the Justitia. My gr gr gr gr grandfather, Robert Horton, was sent to America aboard the Justitia in 1769, arriving in Leestown Virginia in early 1770. According to the Corportion of London Records Office, Robert was found guilty of petty theft. On November 24, 1769, Robert Horton and 22 other "convicts" were handed over to John Stewart to be transported to America. They were sent to America aboard the Justitia under the command of Capt. Colin Somerveil. Upon landing in Leestown, VA, we are not sure what happened to the prisoners. We believe our Robert Horton served his "sentence" as an apprentice, similar to what we know today as an indentured servant. Robert enlisted in the 3rd Militia in Culpeper County, VA in February 1776 and served the next 2 years in various battles, being discharged at Valley Forge in 1778. I suggest you contact the Corporation of London Records Office. They were able to provide me a copy of the actual court transcript of my ancestor.

That pension followed him to NC, KY, TN, IN, IA, MO. Anyone have info on William or why William was shipped to America as a convict?

Re: Information ship named Justitia

Captain Barnett Bond last commanded the Justitia when it set out late in 1742 up Thames river with last post being at Graversend heading to America in April of 1743. It made two other stops prior to Gravesend before making the run to America. Been while since viewed the story of that trip but recall at the time the owners felt they had lost money on the voyage and sought a piece of Bond and used the death of William Bird to get at him. As lost my notes on it and can't find a link to any postings I made of information on this early on will need to go back to my source for additional information.

Do recall that three passengers on board this final voyage with Captain Bond in command were:

1) Thomas Harrill sentenced 1742 and transported in 1743
2) Francis Farrell sentenced 1742 and transported in 1743
3) Hannah White sencenced 1742 and transported in 1743

Only recal this as looking for Harrell back to England and came on Thomas Harrill and noted the Francis ?arrell could have been one of my Francis Harrell and surname White one that later shows with Harrell down the line. Since they all sentenced at same basic time and the transported in 1743 have been working on getting more details on them. So far have found little more than they were shipped on the Justitia probably to Maryland. Have found nothing on their crimes and how long they sent to America for nor where they may have settled in America.

Also have seen later information on the Justitia but due to dates for this feel it a second ship not the one sailed in 1743 under Captain Bond as these dated from 1781 on.... and also American had won it's independence by 1784 from England but they had stopped sending prisoners over back in 1776 or at least by 1781 to America.

I have a copy of Justitia's record of criminals transported in December of 1771. The list includes Lewis Humphreys, Duncan Hardy, John Fox, John Woody or Hoody (not sure which), Judah Levy (my ancestory), Elias Levy, Joseph Loveday, Joseph Mills, Jane Paris, John Paris, Thomas Showell, Robert Ferguson, Henry Levy, Edward Evans and Daniel Hilley. Neil Gillis was the Master of the ship. Maybe this will help you.

Here is some information I have found on the JUSTITIA that someone referred me to. I also am trying to find information on one of my relatives that was on that ship in 1771 or 1772 named JAMES MAY. Can you send information that you may have on this ship that is not listed below? Thanks and happy hunting.

JUSTITIA
The "Justitia" was a 260 ton prison hulk originally moored in the Thames between Galleons Reach and Barking Reach. She was moored there when the American War of Independence put a stop to the practice of Transportation of criminals to the former colonies. The "Justitia formerly belonged to Duncan Campbell who was appointed to supervise the work of the convicts and provided his own hulk, and also bought the old frigate "Censor" from the admiralty. The convicts were employed "to raise soil, sand and gravel from the bed of the river for the benefit of the navigation of the said river". I don't have details of the ship, or it's ultimate fate, but there is a book called The English Prison Hulks by W. Branch-Johnson, published by Christopher Johnson Publishers Ltd. which provides details.[Posted to the Emigration-Ships Mailing List by Ted Finch - 20 August 1997]

The T.O.L date of your Henry Wickham is the same as my GGgrandfather George Gale. This is the date he and the 300 other convicts on the "Minden" disembarked at Fremantle. George was also on the "Justitia" from 1848 till 1851.
I have been fortunate to trace Gale's marriage in 1856, and all his descendants.
Many convicts were sent on to other Aust penal colonies, e.g.. NSW and Tas.
You may find info about this in Rika Erikson's "Convicts to WA" or "Dictionary of West Australians" at Battye Library, Perth, WA.
Russell Masters
WA

I am afraid my notes on the indictment were made for a very specific purpose and hence don't include the types of information other people are likely to want. But, for what they are worth, they include the following:

PRO, High Court of Admiralty, Criminal Records, HCA 1 20, part 1, item 9. Indictment of Barnett Bond, for the murder of William Bird, 26 April 1744.

[None of this is legible enough to make a transcript, but the following information can be deciphered: the ship was on its way to Maryland.

…there was also on board the said ship…one William Bird together with divers other persons (to the jurors… unknown) who were to be conveyed to… Maryland….

Bond on the 13th day of April in the sixteenth year aforesaid, upon the River of Thames … and within this jurisdiction …. [goes on about the ship having sufficient provisions.]

…13th day of April … to the fourth day of June… willfully… to cause or permit to be given and allowed to the said William Bird… sufficient water or any other truck necessary for the support… life of the said William Bird….

…Bond did refuse to give and allow…or permit to be given …a sufficient quantity of fresh water or any other drink ….
The Captain of the Justitia, Barnett Bond, was tried for murder at the Admiralty Court at the Old Bailey in London in 1744. He was accused of murdering William Bird and several other transportees by starving them to death and denying them water. The voyage was to Maryland. If you want to know about this ship and conditions on board for transportees, this might be a case worth looking at.

See Public Record Office, High Court of Admiralty, Criminal Records, HCA 1 20, part 1, item 9, 'Indictment of Barnett Bond, for the murder of William Bird, 16 April 1744'; also see Gentleman's Magazine, vol.xii, Nov. 1742, p.600

I not only just discovered this site on the Justitia, but I think I have also just discovered a new relative! Joseph Wilford is my husbands 4th great grandfather and I have been searching, like you, for information on his transport to America. I have the date - Sept 1766, but don't know if that is when it left or when it arrived. Also have no idea where in England it left from or where it arrived in America. I have no information on his trial except it was for horse theft. This was taken from a message on the Willford/Wilford message board.
I would also be interested to know which line of Wilford's you are from. (Our line Joseph, Joseph, Wm. A., Oliver, John E., Vernon, John.)
