I am researching a convict (Henry Stephenson) who was transported on the Marquis of Huntley in 1828. The ship sailed from Cork, Ireland and his trial took place in Tipperary, Ireland but it says his native place is "London". I'm not sure if this means London, England or Londonderry or some other place in Ireland called London. He was a single, uneducated labourer and a Catholic.
Does anyone know if English convicts were tried in Ireland? Or if it was likely that he moved from London England to Ireland at some stage? Or is it more likely he was Irish?
I should add I haven't had much luck finding any birth, marriage or death records for him. I suspect he is my 4th great grandfather but I'm not 100% sure. A Henry Stephenson is listed as the father of Mary Stephenson my 3 x great grandmother on her marriage certificate, but I have no other proof of him. Problem is also Mary's mother was Aborginal (confirmed through a DNA test), so no records for her either. Mary was born around 1851 between Bathurst and Orange, married Alexander Potts in 1872 and died in 1879.
I'd appreciate any insights.
