As I understand it, once the census was done, a copy was made so that there was a copy for the state and one for federal. I imagine errors in transcription were bound to occur.

Kewaunee Co. WI 1860 Census

Were copies made of the census?

I have a copy of a census page, Kewaunee County Wisconsin, that I inherited from my mother. While it is mostly the same, and has the same census taker's name, date, etc. there are differences in the information between that page and the one that shows on Ancestry.com. My ancestor is listed as 24 years old on Ancestry, and 23 on the copy from my mom, and his occupation is listed on one, but not the other. It's absolutely odd.

I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this as well and could shed any history on it.

Thanks

Many thanks for all the information on the STRONG family. It is more than I had dreamed of receiving.
Do you have access to marriage records? I am wondering if Blanch, born 1895, married a LICHFIELD. Correspondence with a LAVERTY descendant in England mentions receiving "care" packages during World War II from a Blanch Lichfield.

Your help is much appreciated.
Thank you so much for information you gave me but there is one thing I may not have told you and that is I don't live in the USA I live in the UK. I have Ancestry.UK. and our libraries do not have Ancestry.Com so I am having to rely on help from like minded people like me to help guide me through my research so that when I can get to the USA and I can see for myself. My husband and I being seniors.

Matthew Willis is my great grandfathers older brother and he came to the US between 1850 and 1860 with his four sons John, Philip, Richard and William and wife Jenny/Jane. Thomas married a Susan Haar in Grant in 1863. Most of the research I have aquired is from trawling around the internet with the help of Cyndi's List.

The census' are available online. Ancestry.com of course, or if you don't have a subscription, you can go to the library, and most have ancestry subscriptions that you can get online and look at the images, and print them too. If you have a chance, the Wisconsin state historical society is located in Madison, Wi. They are on the campus of the UW and have tons of geneology stuff, and are very helpful in your searching. I can highly recommend at least a day to research!Good luck on your searching.

Hello Kim.
Thank you for helping me. I understand that's pretty difficult to find the right Thoresen or Helgesen. Theu could also have left from the area between 1891 and 1900.

I know that it is a Historical Society in Chippewa Falls. Do you know any e-mail adresses.
It could be that some of them knows about some Norwegian descendant , even some of themselves.

Thank you.
Regards
Tormod

His residence is Wheatland, Kenosha Co., Wisconsin. Birh Aug 1855, wife Josephine. Also, does the original list if this is his first/ 2nd marriage? Many thanks.

I need a look-up on the 1850 census for a Theodore Smith (Schmitz might be used as he was from Prussia). Theodore was born abt 1804-1808 in Prussia. His wife is Anna Maria. Children should be Mary A., Elizabeth Louisa, Julia, and John. Theodore, his wife Anna and daughters Mary and Elizabeth are all from Prussia, the other 2 should be from Wisconsin. What I need to know, if it is listed, is what was the occupation of Theodore and does it list from where in Prussia they are from? Any help is appreciated.

I did not mention earlier but there is no images or info available for the US 1890 census. There was a fire and what did not get burnt was thrown out. So that said, Most of the names that match or could be a possibility dont match with the immigration...For instance there are numerous Toresons, THoresons etc....but they are in the 1880 census which could not be for your family.
I did find this one but i dont think he is yours because he was with his family and he had a wife and 7 children and the two oldest children were 16 and 14 and were also born in Norway the rest of the children were born in MN.

Minnesota Territorial and State Censuses, 1849-1905
about Ole Toreson
Name: Ole Toreson
Census Date: 1895
County: Otter Tail
Locality: Fergus Falls Ward 1
Birth Location: Norway
Gender: Male
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1855
Race: White
Line: 1
Roll: V290_80

I have searched down numerous possibilities and cant find anything that would be close to the men u mentioned. One of the major problems is that when census were done the information is not always reliable.. It depends on 1. Who is giving the info ( was it a neighbor? or someone in the house that may not know the correct info?)
2. What the census taker wrote....most of the time the census taker would spell the names as he heard them.
3. And then of course is just human error.

I really wish i could have found something for u there are tons of Thoresons in Wisconsin. I hope u find the info u r looking for..................KIM

many, many thanks for the marriage transcripts, mcb. they help add quite a bit to the family history.
interestingly, a later tie into this branch of the tree (Searles, actually) came from Waterloo Co., Ontario, Canada and was from Kansas, where Alfred Searles eventually died. so this family is very interconnected, at least, historically.

I believe in the 1920 Census they are in Winnebago CO, IL. Katie and the girls are not listed but the son George and two other boys are. George Albert Bitzer born 8 May 1900 also has a WWI draft registration but I can't read it online because it is not clear enough. Winnebago Co is just below Beloit WI.

It all sounds familiar, the names expecially! I just am not 100% sure if they really are part of my family, as my mom insists that there was a brother named paul but I can find no records of any thoresen families with both a Albert and a Paul in it. I hope I find out more but I this information does seem to fit.

Thanks

Jessie

Hi I was reading about your research and well I have a great grandpa Albert Thoresen born in Norway moved to Chicago, but he had 3 brothers (names unknown) that lived in Wisconsin, they owned a farm and they never got married. I believe about 25 years ago the farm burned down. Does any of this sound like you might have information on?
