Thanks, that's very helpful! Later census records suggest they actually had 10 children in total so if you come across any others, I'd be interested.

I think the enumerator's annotation is something like "Head from home", i.e. the Head was not at home on census night and therefore could not be enumerated with the rest of the household.

I've never seen this before, the head of home isn't just not listed but there is an actual blank space, as though he exists but the informer didn't know his name. But how could someone know so much about the rest of the family without knowing the name of the head of the household? The wife is listed as wife, not the head. It's the 1851 census.

Anyone have any other ideas why this would be the case? The missing person is Joseph Bentley and he can be found on the 1861 census so he wasn't dead.

Best guess = Pensioner Police Gardener.

Gardener seems likely since it was his occupation in the prior censuses. At age 81, it is likely he was a pensioner. Police? Maybe his former employer.

Name change in census records

I have been searching to trace records of my great grandfather who just seemed to vanish out of census England and Wales census records between 1881 and 1891. I may have found out way ... for some reason his first name changed.

I initially thought that I was looking at a different ancestor but it is definitely the same person. What are the odds of 2 blind men with the same surname being married to a woman with the same name and have a son with the same name.

I is obviously not an error in the hand written records, but was this a common occurrence?

If anyone has any idea of the how or why this happened or if it was just something that he did on a whim, I would be really interested to hear your thoughts.

Thanks

What are the two forenames? Is it possible he had two forenames and used one at one time, and the other at another time? I had an ancestor that was known as Unity for almost every census save one. On that one she was listed as Elizabeth. It turned out her full name was Elizabeth Unity Stanton. At one time, she used Elizabeth, and at another used Unity.

What do you mean by registration number. ?

Do you mean the address schedule number ?, as per the left hand column in the attached example of an 1871 U.K. census document.

If so, the schedule number is just the census enumerator's reference number for that particular property on his list of properties in his particular census area.

Forget about such numbers, they're of no value or use to you.

The only way to identify people on different censusess is to compare their details as listed on the censuses.
Census Substitute records for Co. Armagh

From the Irish Family History Foundation's Online Research Service:

"From the Irish Family History Foundation's Online Research Service:

"RootsIrelandThe Irish Family History Foundation's Online Research Service (ORS) are pleased to announce the availability of 41,090 new Census Substitute records from Armagh Ancestry for Co. Armagh.

"Quite often the only realistic strategy in tracing ancestors beyond church registers is to examine surviving census returns and census substitutes, often compiled by civil parish, for any references to a surname or given name of interest.

"This database contains an index to people recorded in fourteen such sources, dating from 1611 to 1855. These sources usually only name heads of household; each source returns the name of head of household, year, civil parish address, and, in most cases, townland (or street/town) address. The Flax Growers Lists of 1796 plus some of the 1740 and 1766 returns don't record townland addresses. The sources are:

Muster Rolls of 1611
Armagh Rent Rolls of 1620
Hearth Money Rolls of 1666
Drumcree Rents of 1737
Protestant Householders of 1740
Signatories for 1st Markethill Presbyterian Church of 1763
Religious Census of 1766
Census of Heads of Households for Creggan parish of 1766
Armagh City Census of 1770
County Armagh Flax Growers List of 1796
Forkhill Cess Lists of 1820
County Armagh Tithe Applotments of 1823-37
Census of Newtownhamilton 2nd Presbyterian Church of 1826
Emigrants from Derrynoose Parish 1840-1855

"By logging directly into the Armagh Centre site you can choose a 'Source' from the search screen to narrow your search.

"Just go to the following site and login using your existing IFHF login details.
http://armagh.rootsireland.ie

"See the Armagh Sources List for full details.
Registration number on Census of Scotland

Hi,
Can someone tell me if there is a meaning to the registration number on the census? I have a printout of a family in the 1861 census with a registration number of 748 and a printout of a family in the 1871 census with a registration number of 748/1. I THINK it's the same family. Does the registration number help to confirm that, or does it just have to do with where the information is found? Thank you for any help you can give me.

Exactly. Sometimes it's just a slash across a column, sometimes lines across whole rows - basically a way of keeping a check of where they were up to in their sums. You also come across annotations in the occupation column - these relate to the coding system for occupation categories.

The only stupid question is the one that goes unasked.

The marks you see in the census enumerators' books were made by the clerks whose job it was to compile the population statistics which were the sole purpose of the census - the information about individuals was simply a by-product of this process.

According to the 1911 census Eliza was living at 5 St Anns Square, Coppull, Wigan. NO HEAD.
I believe John didnt die until 1917.

Hannah Burrows born 1815 married Dennis Wailing, who died then she re-married a man also known as Burrows. John Burrows on 6/9/1846 in Rainford, Lancashire. 1851 census states NO HEAD, address Canal Place, Eccleston. In 1853 and 1857 two more Burrows children were born Paule and Elizabeth. 1861 census still states NO HEAD, living at St Helens.

Any info would be fantastic. Thanks.

On my family tree 50 years apart one on my grandmothers side and one on my grandfathers side, there are husbands missing on the census. They are alive and more children are born inbetween the census dates, but there is no acknowledgement of them. Why could this be. Could they possibly be working away? Imprisoned? I dont understand this?

Currently the policy on censuses is that they're made publicly available 100 years after they were taken, so the 1921 census will be available in 2022 or thereabouts. The 1931 census returns were destroyed by fire and there was no census taken in 1941, so the next one will be the 1951 census available in approximately 2052. That is, unless the 100 year policy is relaxed at some point.

Christine

I have a 1901 census entry of a retired soldier (blind) that I am trying to trace but cannot find in the military records so far. I'm just wondering whether army barracks were listed in the previous census so if he was not serving overseas I might pick him up. he would have been in the Worcester Regiment and stationed probably at Norton Barracks. But my searches haven't found the barracks at all
