Re: census for 1921

The problem lies in the fact that (unlike the 1911 census), the 1921 census was conducted under the 1920 Census Act. This Act is still in force, and, unfortunately for family historians, it contains a statutory prohibition on disclosure. I do agree that for those of us who would like to fill in gaps in the stories, seeing the 1921 census would have been wonderful. However, there is now a plethora of information including occupation records, school records and electroal rolls, etc. etc., which will have to do instead.

I really don't think it should be 100 years to wait. Most people don't start their family tree until like me in their 60s, I search for no other reason than curiosity as everyone is dead any way. Is there a valid reason for the 100 year wait? I'll be long gone by 2022. lol

Hello

Yes I'm pretty sure they ran off to Ireland - I'm not even sure if Grandad's first name is William Henry or Harry. I'm pretty sure that Peter and Ellen aren't his parents unless Granddad lied about everything - Dad always said he was pretty cut up about his parents dying. Granddad was supposed to have joined the army and fought in the Boer war but was injured and picked up by Canadain Doctors who found out he was only 15 - that's why I thinkhe was born in 1884(ish) rather than 1881.

Wonder if Beatrice married William Greaves, but then run off to Ireland with your Henry May??
If the Henry May you found in 1901 was the son of a Peter May with wife Ellen...They are still alive on the 1911, but sons Thomas & Henry are missing.
I can see a possible Thomas, single in lodgings, but No Henry. Which would fit into him being in Ireland.
Maybe he was a soldier in Irish army.

Very enlightening commentary on this thread, I must say!

Living in Austalia, the web access to UK records is vital to family tree research and although at times costly to access, all very critical to the research.

I've also added your Facebook link to my own Facebook page encouraging others to join.

Regards
Eric
Metung, Victoria, Australia
There was no census in 1921. The next one was 1926 and it has been reported by the Society of Australian Genealogists that it was destroyed during WWII. I haven't seen confirmation of that elsewhere.

"The returns for Northern Ireland census of 1926 were apparently destroyed during World War II and those for 1937, 1951, 1961, 1971, 1981 and 1991 are now deposited in PRONI but subject to closure."

All English & Welsh census records taken under the 1920 Census Act (i.e. the 1921 census to the 2001 census) are withheld forever.
The law does not allow release even after 100 years.

Please join the campaign to have the census released by writing to members of parliament and asking for a change in the law.
Cheers
Guy

From time-to-time Guy Etchells has contributed to this thread to correct various misconceptions about the 1921 Census. In short, he has corrected the main misconception - held by many, including those running the 1911census website - that the 1921 Census will be available from 2 Jan 2022 under the previously understood 100-year rule. Guy was quick to point out that, unless there is a change in the law, the 1921 Census can NEVER be released.

For those who are interested in the whyfores and wherefores of this depressing thought I commend a read of an article by Guy Etchells in the latest issue (Number 94, September 2010) of the Your Family Tree magazine where Guy explains the problem very well and actually calls for "access to the 1921 Census NOW".

I think it befalls all of us who have an interest in genealogy to support Guy's call and suggest that we can all in our own small way do our utmost to bring about either a change in the law to enable the 1921 Census to be made available as soon as possible. If enough of us bombard our various MPs with (taxpayers') demands for this to be done, we should be able to entice a few of these "expense-laden" individuals to do something about it.

If the Government is unable to agree to such a request over the next few years then every effort should be made for them to change the law and re-introduce the 100-year rule thereby ensuring that the 1921 Census does become public from 2022 and that all future censuses are formally available at the 100-year point.

If you read through this board you will see the answers are all here.
ie, in a nutshell - the 1921 Census is NOT going to be released unless there is a change in the Law.
Yes

It names father as Henry May - no one in the family has ever heard of William Greaves - Granddad's last child (Uncle Ron) died in September and I think it would have upset him terribly to have found this out

If yes who is the grooms father??If you hav'nt got the cert. if it were me I would buy it.Was your gran the Helena or Edith.Putting too much reliance on family hearsay can sometimes be mis-leading so it is better to prove everything with certs. You also did not say who the children were and when they were born.

Regards

Sandra

Thanks Sandra

You're right - it is worth a try.

We were told Grandad was

William Henry May - family always called him Harry (On 1911 census) or Henry on children's birth certificates.
Told born 1881 in Liverpool
Parents died when he was 13 of flu epidemic
His older siblings argued over who would look after him so he ran away and never saw them again
Fought in Boer War, was shot snd injured in the leg - Army disocvered he was only 15 and was discharged.

The problem I have is

There is a Henry May born in 1881 Liverpool BUT in 1901 census he still lives with his parents and siblings (some younger)

If he was born in 1881 he would have been 18 in 1899 - he would have had to be born 1884 onwards.

To make matters more complicated no marriage cert between him and Gran can be found BUT I found one with Gran married to William Greaves(born 1882) in Sheffield in 1908 (100% certain it is Gran) - William Greaves disappears after this and 1st record of Granddad is on 1911 Irish census.

I've done this research for 10 years now and found every other strand except Granddad and to be honest it's driving me crazy.

Is Grandad William Greaves and changed his name OR is he Henry May and lied about his past OR is he some one else entirely

See what I mean about confusing!!!
