no thats the person that I contacted who has linked my family tree to theirs. It would be really lovely if they are family as we know very little about that side of the tree. My great grandad went to india with the Army married out there and had children but returned to london with his family but as with most families as the generations increase so does the distance between them until you lose contact. I definitely have my fingers crossed.

its probably mine lol I've got several on the go. Part of the problem I have is that Catherine Jones who is the bride in this instance is a VERY common name. So far I have had three different family trees contact me all with a Catherine Jones in them that profess to have the same lineage but with a bit of digging and a few certificates they have turned out to be incorrect.

I was lucky enough to know both sets of great grandparents well into my teens early 20's so know a reasonable amount about my family in this instance William James Jones is my great grandfather and would be brother to Catherine Jones.

I'd love to have contact with any of his siblings families but obviously with such a common name its easy to go wrong especially with fathers names Thomas and George...

Family missing from 1911 census - Summary books say "uninhabited"

I've known for some time that my family is missing from the 1911 census.

Edward Cooper b. 1862 Horsforth, a Master Tailor
Elizabeth Cooper b. 1861 Mirfield
Children:-
William Hall Cooper b.1889
Harry b.1895
Alfred b.1895
Arthur b. 1897
Ida b. 1900

Their address would have been 20 Ashville Terrace, Burley (Leeds) and although every household on that street is listed, this particular address is missing.

It occurred to me today to check the 1911 summary books for this street to see if there is any other information, and sure enough number 20 Ashville Terrace is indeed listed, but it says it is "uninhabited".

What I'm interested to know is why this would be the case. Are they on holiday? Did they refuse to take part in the census? I've searched elsewhere for them but I can't find them staying at another address.

Still births are not registered in England until 1927, in Scotland in 1939.

Legally, a child should be registered as living if it shows ANY sign off life once it is born. If it shows such a sign then a birth and, if it dies, death record should be made. If the child is deemed by the attendant medical staff to be born dead then no registration of live birth occurs. No birth certificate is issued. The only record prior to 1927 would be at the hospital or doctor's surgery I suspect.

After 1927 the records are only available to the immediate family, ie, parents and siblings. You can't see them now.

However, mistakes do occur on census records. So you must allow for this possibility.

Also, there is a place to note the potential for an emotional reaction. The parents just could register the child on the census because they regard the child as part of their family. I doubt this occurs often. But no one is likely to actually check, so it would not incur the wrath of a bureaucrat.

Thankyou for the reply. I have done some delving, and it would appear that one of the children i had in my tree, was possibly not one of the children as not present on any of the census, plus other detail such as birth place, names in tradition etc.
I have removed this child, and replaced it with an unknown - possibly a stillborn or a late miscarriage. I cannot find a birth record.
Im assuming there wouldnt be a record for a late miscarriage. If there are records for a stillborn - I cannot find a possible choice.
Thankyou again

It was meant to be the head of the household who filled in 1911 census,if they were unable to write then maybe one of the children living at home would fill it it in.

I have looked back and can see 9 children still living up to 1891 census.

I would search for more births, there is a 6 year gap between Tom c1870 and Henry/Harry c1876,you have 10 children on your tree, there may be 1 more or it could be an error.

1911 census - children alive/dead confusion

Im currently researching my gg grandfather who had 11 children. William Gravil 1847-1926. Born in Thorne, Yorkshire, England.
The 1911 census states him as having 7 children alive and 4 children who died. I have all 11 children in my tree, with relevant infomation on all of them, however i have 3 as died and 8 as living, with proof they were living in 1911.
How would it be, that the census is wrong? Who filled it in? The man going door to door, or the occupant? How could this infomation possibly be incorrectly recorded by the Occupant/father? Im hoping that the door to door man mis heard and wrote it incorrectly but how can you mix up 3 with 4 and 7 with 8. Please help.
thanks Elaine, I did ponder on the possibility of a 'mistake' on the death record as they would have been asking for maiden name of Johns mother at a delicate time and it might have thrown them a bit - I know when MY father died they were asking me his date of birth and my sister and I knew the year and month but we got mixed up - when I asked my fahter for his mothers maiden name he had to think twice before he remembered it - so you never know - and we are talking about a time when records were not on line -

the only thing i can do is to carry it on - as see what comes up - Canadian john is staying on my tree for now as i cnat see there being two johns born the same year to david and jane jarvis in the same suburb - little hulton at theat time was quite a small place .

wow thanks for all the things - im very busy with it all now - just ive stumbled accross something - now ive got a Jane Jarvis (nee Eckersley ) as mother to John and the other siblings - from this source :

Marriage: 2 Oct 1853 St Mary the Virgin, Deane, Lancashire, England
David Jervis - 21, Miner, Bachelor, Little Hulton
Jane Eckersley - (X), 23, Spinster, Little Hulton
Groom's Father: Bold Jervis, Carter
Bride's Father: John Eckersley, Carter
Witness: Thomas Eckersley, (X); Mary Worthington, (X)
Married by Banns by: Benjm. Hodgens
Register: Marriages 1852 - 1855, Page 115, Entry 229
Source: Microfilm held by Manchester Central Library

now on Johns death record it has Jane Jarvis nee (Worthington )as mother so a different mother than the one in my tree !! - so its back to the drawing board - ive been unable to locate a marriage for David Jarvis and Jane Worthington anywhere but when i found the marriage at mary the virgin deane for marriages and the names 'Bold Jarvis' is on the gravestone as well and all the dates match here. On my gt grandmothers bapts it lists her mothers name as Jane and on the grave we have 'Jane - wife of David' so he either married two Janes - or what ? there is only one Jane on the headstone and she was born in 1933 -

so - did David marry twice or do i have the wrong brother born exactly the same year ? I have Jane as dec'd before David she died in 1894

seems strange the name of the witness is also a worthington -
well im off the the library to check on this next week as its wonderful to have found all the details - thats if hes the right one - BUT all the Jarvis,Jervis in that area of little hulton are related -

this is part of the headstone _
Mr David JARVIS
Died Thursday, June 27 1918, Aged 83
Born in the year 1835
Husband of Jane

Mrs Jane JARVIS
Died Tuesday, June 19 1894, Aged 63
Born in the year 1831
Wife of David

Mr William JARVIS
Died Monday, February 15 1937, Aged 74
Born in the year 1863
Son of David and Jane

Mary Ann JARVIS
Died Saturday, April 16 1949, Aged 73
Born in the year 1876
Daughter of David and Jane
Thanks Elaine, yes i do have brother john who went to canada in my tree and i would love to contact my relatives in canada but i dont have subscription so i cant message them. My aunt does say we had relatives in Canada - but shes unsure of the details she does mention an auntie Nellie from the 1950s s era possibly johns daughter ?

i did think of the possibility of Alice and clara going over for a visit but i cant find anything perpahs im looking in the wrong place. If John went to canada in 1906 maybe Alice went around the same time ? do you know the names of Johns children ?

The Topping family lived next door to Alice and gt gt grandad David Jarvis on the other next door.

I would love to get in touch with the family in Canada as im taking grave stone pictures of gt gt grandad david Jarvis in summer as the cemetry is quite near me im a bus ride away from Little hulton. Perphas some of the Topping family are buried there as well.

any help appreciated very much appreciated

hi can anyone help me - ive been looking for my gt grandmother on the 1911 census for months - but she is missing along with my grnadma !!

i have all the other census intact - except for this one - my grandma would have been 16 and still single -
they were living at 247 manchester rd west little hulton on the 1981 and 1901 and my gt grandmas death record still shows 247 manchester rd - but the census shows them to have moved out for a few years - but where ???

so they moved out somewhere between 1901 and 1919 but then gt grandmas managed to get back into 247 for her last years.

ive explored the possibilities as gt gt grandad lived at 245 next door but he was still there in 1911 - but she wasnt -

they were not at the eldest daughters either as she was married she lived in the same street but there were not there either .

is there a way to look up 1911 census via the address ? the only thing i can think of is theres is a misssspell as this happened somewhere else - also my grandma provides a different house number on her marriage record which is 265 manchester road- 265 Manchester Rd.
- so i was hoping to look up via that address if its possible -

as it stands ive no idea why they would leave that address for a few years - then caome back - maybe they went abroard -ive exhausted all possibilities but again , i cannot pin down anything substantial on the passanger lists and i dont think ill be young enough to sort it out in 1922 when the next census is around

any suggestions helpful

the names are alice wolstencroft dob 1858 and duaghter clara wolstencroft

Just had a difficult job trying to find the message I read this morning on the Message Board. Your original place, UK, England, Lancs may be better.
I have looked up sailings from Liverpool to USA at the time your family members would have sailed. I have found no obvious links, but this is interesting:
Sarah (aged 36), Enda 12, Alice 9 and William Wolstencroft 6 left Liverpool for New York 7th April 1923.....their address was 151 Manchester Road, Kearsley . Any family connection possible?
Incidentally I wonder if in you message board posts there has been some confusion between Manchester Road and Manchester Road West, two different roads.

He was born in Hastings, Sussex but was living in Essex in 1911. I need to know his relationship to the head of the household. Thanking you in advance with kind regards, Dave

The new method of adding sources does automatically enter the full date for the 1911 census, but not for any of the others, which is a shame. But still, one is better than none at all. :-)

Christine

Ok that explains it.

Gotta say though that if it does appear on every page then I still don't see it. Here's the page I'm looking it if you want to check -

interactive.ancestry.com/2352/rg14_25387_0341_03/60053671

Maybe some areas put the date on and some didn't.

"So you're saying there will be a date on some page . . ."
==========================
No, I am saying that there is printed text in the top box of the first column of EVERY PAGE. In that box are the instructions as to what date the information is to be recorded for. It cleary says APRIL 2.
