Here is a link to the census page with what I believe is my grandfather's name, William Williams (half way down the page).Under occupation it looks like "narry" or "navvy" - does anyone know what that means?

http://interactive.ancestry.com/7815/RADRG13_5183_5188-0436/...

What is the surname that you are looking for? If you are using the 1901/1911 Census online then try the surname and County Kerry. If you believe they resided near Foilmore or Filemore as you have it then try the surname and the DED which is Castlequin. This will give you all the residents in the enumeration district of Castelquin (might be Castlequinn).

My suggestion would be to obtain the marriage certificate for Albert and Alice if you haven't already. (March qtr 1920 Stoke on Trent 6b 462). This should give you a)a dob for Albert and b)a name and occupation for his father which should find you the correct Albert on the census.

If you haven't got the marriage cert. what information is it that lead you to think Henry and Mary Ann were Albert's parents?

If it's any consolation there are two family trees on Ancestry with Albert Hawley and wife Alice Peck and both of these have different information to each other! One has him born Castleford in Yorkshire with no parents named and the other has Henry Hawley and Mary Ann Miriams as parents, but has him with grandparents and mother Jane Hawley??? in Wales.

Hi,

Basically I arrived at this point tracing back from known and verified information on the son Albert Ernest Hawley who married a Alice Maud Peck in 1920 and the story relating to emigrating to meet up with Joseph in South Africa, via Canada, around 1928.
I assumed I had the correct parents for Albert with Henry and Mary Ann Mirams\Miriams and was then working back forwards from them to find all of their other children and so on, which was going fine until I hit the 1901 census.

So I think I may now have mixed up the two families, as I now have listed as children for these two the following -

Albert Ernest 1889
Rose Ann born 1885
Francis 1890
Alfred 1893
Frederick 1895
Thomas 1897
Mary A 1898
Ann Elizabeth 1900
Joseph (either 1884 or 1900)
Jack 1902

Hi,

There are indeed two Hawley families living in relatively close proximity to each other at that time - both Henry Hawley and Mary Ann Hawley.

One couple is Henry Hawley a Gas Stoker/Engineer son of Thomas Hawley a Smith and Mary Ann Miriams daughter of John Miriams a Police Constable. Married in 1885 Lambeth St Johns.

The other is Henry Hawley a Decorator son of Robert Hawley
(Market Gardener I think it says) and Mary Ann Lorby daughter of James Lorby (Can't determine what occupation is). Married in 1872 at South Lambeth St Stephens.

Do you have the correct family, that is, Henry Hawley and Mary Ann Miriams?

I have traced Henry Hawley (husband of Mary Ann Miriams) back and he does indeed have a brother Joseph Hawley.

There are a bunch of baptism records for Hawley children with father Henry and mother Mary Ann. I can guess at which children belong where from father's occupation and this would pan out as:

Henry Hawley and Mary Ann Miriams:
Rose Ann bap. 1884 - 25 Tyers Terrace - Lambeth
Albert Ernest bap. 1888 - 16 Auckland Terrace - Lambeth
Francis Wm bap. 1890 - 3 Riverall St - Lambeth
Florence Mary bap. 1897 3 Riverhall St - Lambeth
Annie Elizabeth bap. 1903 - 3 Riverhall St - Lambeth
John Henry bap. 1903 - 3 Riverhall St - Lambeth

I'm inclined to think that the others belong to two other families as Henry's occupation changes between Dealer, Decorator and Barman and from Bethnal Green to Kennington:-
James John bap. 1875 - New Street - Bethnal Green (Dealer)
Henry bap. 1875 - New Street - Bethnal Green (Dealer)
Alice Mary bap. 1877 - Henry Street - Kennington (Decorator)
Henry bap. 1877 - Henry Street - Kennington (Decorator)
Annie Eliz. bapt. 1877 - New Street - Bethnal Green (Dealer)
Charles Edward bap. 1880 - New Street - Bethnal Green (Dealer)
William Isaac bap 1884 - Hoxton Street - Bethnal Green (Dealer)
Albert bap 1885 - Hoxton Street - Bethnal Green (barman)

If you believe that Mary Ann Miriams is your Hawley family, then the Tyers Street address could be explained as this is her address on the marriage record - perhaps she went home to Mum to have the baby!

If you want any of this information, don't hesitate to ask.

Emma.

Hi,

Thanks very much for your reply and taking the time to look at it.

It does indeed seem that the death records match and would explain why they aren't on the census for the household.

I can live with the coincidence of there being other children the same age as Rose and Albert would have been with the same names as they are fairly common names.

However the addresses on the baptism records are different to the address which stays the same across both censuses. I had a look on the map and Aukland Street and Tyers Terrace are very close, and both are within say half a mile to a mile of where Riverhall Street used to be (parallel with Thorncroft Street). And the parent names match.

I think 2 sets of children born at the same time in the same area of London to different families with the same parents names is too much to be coincedence so I guess there must be a reason for the addresses being different. Did people have any reason to give false or different addresses on baptisms at that time?

EDIT: There is also an account from a family member that Albert sailed to Canada and met with another brother called Joseph (who I have yet to get all the information for). I found a passenger record for an Albert E Hawley in 1928, which is when the account said the voyage took place, from England to Canada.
However I'm wondering if they got Albert and Alfred mixed up which is entirely likely :)

Hi,

I had a quick look at the possible children from 1901 and I think these are probably with their own families. For instance, I assume that the Rose Hawley you found in 1901 is with Martin Hawley born Ireland. Checking the 1891 census for Martin Hawley he has daughter Rose with him at that time. I'm sure you'll find the same for the possible Alberts.

Have you considered these two deaths from Freebmd?:

Albert Ernest Hawley aged 2, June qtr 1891, Lambeth 1d 319
and
Rose Ann Hawley aged 9, Dec qtr 1893, Lambeth 1d 328.

I checked baptism records on Ancestry and have found both Rose and Albert's, you'll see their full names match the death records. I attached copies of the baptism records for you.

Emma.
Children show up with different families?

Hi,

I'm having trouble with a family I'm tracing in the 1901 census. The 1891 census seems to match all the other information I already had, but then in 1901 I have 2 of the children missing from the household. Their ages would have been 16 and 12. I know that at those ages they could have already have moved out to go and work elsewhere or stay with relatives because of overcrowding (there are more children born after 1891 that show up in 1901).
So I searched for each individually again in the census and only found 1 record for each - both are living with other families who seem to have the same family name and they're listed as children of the heads of the households.

Can anyone shed any light on this? Maybe it's just me having spent too long staring at records :)

The head of the household for both is Henry Hawley born 1862 and they are at 3 Riverhall Street in Lambeth. The 2 children from 1891 missing in 1901 for the same household are Rose and Albert Hawley, 16 and 12 years old.

On the 1911 census he is down as Thomas William,so that must be the correct marraige that I found, often in families they were christened in full name then used the other name!!!Found this quite often in my own tree!!Also the image copy has been filled in on behalf of them (witnessed) as Charles hs made his mark (probably couldn't read or write!) Also against william it states married 21 yrs ,6 children although this has been crossed through in red ink. It also states this against Isabella in the workhouse although she states 8 children ,6 living.
If you look back into Isabellas tree you will see she had a sister Priscilla! Again names also ran through families!!

Still, this doesn't help us find Wiliam Hartsthorne!!

It looks as though Isabella and the younger children did. Cannot see William in 1911,in the earlier census he states that he is nearly blind.Census states married foer isa bella in 1911 although that would be written by head of the workhouse so may not be true!

I cannot see a marraige for a William Doleman/Dolman to an Isobella Cross ( name from earlier census where Father in law is present)I can see a marraige for an Isabella Cross to a Thomas Doleman in 1886,Derbyshire!!!

I am looking for both really, we know nothing about them. Maybe your right about ordering the death cert.
That is the correct Priscilla with Frank, John and Pamela. Would you mind having a look on the census, she what she was doing or any family information.
Thank you
Hannah

Pamela, did you want to try a really mystery family tree? lol
My Great Grandfather was called William Hartshorne he Lived with a lady call Priscilla Dolman who was born in 1904. William had left his first wife and children but we don't think that he ever divorced her to be with Priscilla. He had 3/4 children with her. I believe he died between 1945 and 1951. We know nothing about them at all!
Where do I start to unpick this?

Pre 1837 its down to Parish Records. I never have much luck with these to be honest, some are available on line.If you are able to get to the parish then you will have more luck, however there are members who may have the parish records on disc/microfilm.

You can look on line at Familysearch ,its a free site, there are also many other sites.
A good forum site is Britishgeneaology.com a free site where memebers help each other and people local to the areas will have better access to early records.

Always post as much info as ou can when asking for help.
