Wow, fast response. Thank you so much!! I just noticed I got the decade wrong so will hope your records will still cover the dates. It was the 1891 census and ship list that I am trying to reconcile.

1891 census: 2 Tewkesbury Bldgs, Whitechapel
Severyn Klowski age 26 Hairdresser, born Poland
Lucy Klowski wife age 21 born Posen, Germany

We know that this couple was in New York by the end of that month and the ship record that looks like a good match is the Italia which arrived in New York on April 8th, 1891. I found this on ancestry but it's not the complete passenger list, just the ones who identified themselves as being from Poland, Austria and Galacia which means that I can't confirm it's the right guy by checking if his wife is on the same ship. The name I am hoping is his is S. Kloski, Polish.

Thank you again for your response and assistance, I really appreciate it!

Just done a little reading on Atlantic crossing times in 1881 - it varied a lot, even on the same ship and same route - could be as short as 9 days, and as much as 2 weeks.

Hello - the census date in 1881 was the night of April 3rd/4th, BUT the forms were delivered to each residence a couple of days before this, filled in by the head of household as to where each inhabitant would be, or expect to be, on that actual night of 3/4 April. The forms were collected the next day after delivery, so it's quite possible that the people in question had a little more time to sail for New York and arrive on the 8th, if only by a small margin of a day or two. Having said this, if they are the same people, and assuming they did board ship before census night, then the form has been completed to reflect residency at the time the papers were delivered. There should be a departure date in the records also..if you want to pm me their details, I'll have a look for you - I have full access to Britain, Outbound Passengers, covering that time.

Regards, Gillian.

Exact date of census

Good morning,

I am helping my daughter with a research project and looking for direction. We know a man and his wife are listed on the 1881 census and we BELIEVE we have found this same man and his wife arriving in New York the same month, April 8th to be exact. From my digging it says the census was taken the night of April 3rd but it is highly doubtfull this man could have been in London on the 3rd and arriving in New York just 5 days later. I know 5 days is about right for this point in time but I imagine it took longer in 1881. Was the census started and finished on April 3rd? Was the process started earlier but that was the submission date? Thank you in advance for any help.

Hi,

Thank you very much for your help really appreciate it, it has been a great help as I had no idea they originated from Ireland, I found my dads grandfather on his mums side were from Ireland my dad was Leslie Cowley and his grandfather was Hugh Alexander Johnston so there is a lot of Irish which I think is going to make it a bit difficult to trace them. Thanks again for your help.

Kind Regards
Lin.

Hi,

Thanks very much for the marriage licence I think it is the right one looking at it, it seems Mary could'nt read as she has put an X as her mark and her father was a mariner. I will try to get back to their parents I would be very grateful if you have anymore information on them I have found them on the 1901 and 1911 census but can't find anything before that. Thank you again for your help.

Kind Regards
Lin.
Thanks but those are not my ancestors. My Sarah Ann Horfield wasn't born till August 30 1863. I have a copy of her birth certificate and there was no father listed.

I have searched the 1881 census every way I can think of short of going page by page and looking at every hand written line I cant find her. The only explanations i can think of as to why I cant find my ancestors is either they didn't make it onto the census, they are there but with an assumed name, or the person transcribing it messed up quite badly.

I am having a tough time finding the 1881 census for my 2xgreat grand mother Sarah Ann Horsfield. She would be about 18 at the time possibly working in the cotton industry. I am hoping she is living with or near the father of her son Henry.

I am also looking for Sarah's mother on the same census. Her name is Maria Horsfield. She would be 38 and also in the cotton industry. Its posable that she would be living with or near a Stephen Watkins, same age.

Both Sarah Ann and Maria where born in Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire, England and lived in and around there most of their lives.

All I know is that he had a Sister and was born in Northern England. His family tried to trace him via the Salvation Army but he was not interested in contacting them.

I would love to know where my roots originate from!

Thanks for that.

On a slightly separate question - is there a way of discovering the parents of someone without sending off for the birth certificate? I'm trying to find who the parents are of John Thomas Berridge Atkins born about 1893 in Mansfield - haven't got the reference to hand but it is on FreeBMD. I've tried various sites for a baptism, and found later children, but with no luck to date. He shows up as the son of Thomas Atkins and Harriet (formerly Goodes nee Reed) in both 1901 and 1911 census but was born before they married in 1897. The "Berridge" is a tribute to Thomas Atkins mother who was Mary Berridge before she married his father.

Thanks again.

Chris

I think it now begins to get really complicated although I am not too sure whether it is correct or not but I have a feeling that it just might be.

Fanny Reed had at least one and possibly 3 illegitimate children before she married Thomas.
Hello

I am having a problem! I can find Jerry Atkins born about 1863 in Brington/Brinkton Hunts on the 1871 Census, living in Hunts, and on the 1901, living with his family in Church Gresley Derbyshire, but I can't find any trace of him on the 1881 and 1891 census. I think he married Harriet Goodes in Mansfield in 1897 but can't find her on the 1891 or 1881 either! Any help gratefully received
Thank you
Chris

In the 1891 census, Alice is a widow, living with two of her sons, James and Thomas, at Gateshead, Durham, District 37. There is a death registration for a Peter Martin in the 4th quarter of 1890, Gateshead, age 63. (FreeBMD) There is a death registration for an Alice Martin in the 2nd quarter of 1896, Gateshead, age 64. (FreeBMD) These are possibly your Peter and Alice, although Peter's age is lower than expected.
Linda

I have the martin family in Gateshead in 1881, Peter (Co. Down 1819) and Alice (Co. Armagh 1833). And their children Peter (Dalstone 1862), Annie (Newcastle 1864), James (1867 Hexham) and Thomas (1870 Durham).
Note that the children all follow the route of a railway!
Peter is a railway worker, age 62 in 1881.
The whole lot disappears after this.
Railway work is a family trait but can find no trace of anyone after 1881.
Such a common name means it is hard to trace them, any suggestions?
