Thank you for the responses. The ancestor that I am referring to is Steven Newborn, born 1826 in North Carolina (or 1833 in Tennessee, according to the other record; I have no explanation for the difference in birth years, but through my research I have determined that North Carolina and Tennessee are both valid birth places for him).
I have attached both records to this message, in case anyone will be willing or able to help. One of the records misspelled his name as "Stean," but the image shows that it was actually "Steve."
Thanks again! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

The 1870 census we see is a COPY of the original. From 1850 to 1870, the original went to the county courthouse, and a copy went to the state and the federal government. Thus we see online from the National Archives (initially), a copy of the census.

It is more likely that what you have is a copy error, rather than an error on the part of the original census taker.

Families listed twice on the 1870 census

Hello, everyone! I have a dilemma: one of my ancestors and his entire family (wife and children) seem to be listed twice on the 1870 census. Same township - actually, the two entries are just a page or so apart - and basically the same birth years (some may be a year or two off). Besides the slightly different birth years, the only difference between the two entries is that there are two or three "extra" children on one record.
I know that it is possible for individuals to appear twice on one census, but what are the chances of a duplicate family??

I'm black, and several of my ancestors on my mother's side of the family were very light-skinned...or "mulatto," as the older census records called it. I was about to disregard a record (because the census called the family white), until I realized it actually WAS my ancestor!

This is the "dirt" in the records that comes up everywhere. When the political manipulating wants to focus on a specific attribute, the rules change to fit the need. In the early census, it was simple. Black, White, Other. What was Other? Then it broke down to Other - Asian, Indian, Mulatto. Then it became a matter of free or slave. You could be Black, free, and still not be counted because you did not pay taxes or own property, therefore you did not get on the census. All the way up to the 1930s, the rule was: Any mixture in race was counted as the non-White side. Then that changed to the race was whatever the father's race was. Native races were all grouped into Indian on the census, but later each tribe was listed on the special census just for residents who were living on reservations. Being listed in the census as White may have been due to not having any other choice at the time or the census taker didn't now how else to enter it.

June of 1917 the family lived in Cleveland, Ohio, according to Mike Vitkovietz' [sic] WW1 draft registration card. His address at that time was 11717 Park View Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio.

Dec. 6, 1929 is the date for a Naturalization record for Mike Vitkovitz. At that time his address was 8807 South Highland Ave., Garfield Hgts, Ohio.

The address on the 1940 census was listed as 8807 S. Highland Avenue, Garfield Heights, Cuyahoga County, OH.

I don't find the family on the 1920 or 1930 census, although it certainly appears the family was living in Cuyahoga County at the time.

Beth
not related

Thank you for the ideas!
Her name is Veronika (Veronica on some papers) Iha (Icha on some papers). Married name Veronica Vitkovitz.
She is my father's Great Aunt. She was born in 1882 in Poland, grew up in Hungary, came to the US at age 17, and passed away in 1976. She came over by herself in 1899. She went back to visit family in 1901, was married in 1912, and went back to visit in 1913. I have all these documents. It's between 1913 and 1940 that I am missing documents.
My father's cousin met her a few times. She worked as a servant for the Shepard family and I found her on the 1910 census that way. I have her records from 1940 to present.
I never thought to try just a first name, birth, and death date. I will try that next. She is not listed in any of the city directories. I will keep on looking.
These census (1920 and 1930) are really not that important except..I am making books of each of my ancestors with every possible address they had. I have my Great Grandfather's addresses from 1909 (when he came over from Hungary) to when he passed away.
Thanks again for the ideas!
Sincerely,
Theresa Iha

Hi,

It's more likely that they weren't missed, but that their name is not as you expect on the census sheets or that the name was mistranscribed. Have you used wild cards to search? Have you used just the first name, birth year plus/minus, birth location, and location where you expect him? Have you looked in City Directories for his address in 1920 or 1930 and looked up the enumeration district by address and then tried to locate him that way?

The estimates for truly missed people in 1920 and 1930 is probably about 6 or 7% missed.

I have been living this situation for almost 10 years. Great grandfather, William Henry smith and his daughter, Eva are not on the 1930s census. I went through all listings for the most likely county in Kentucky that they lived in. All my hopes rested on the 1940s census....they dont show up there either. I know they were alive then. The other frustating part of the 1940s census concerns William's son, Paul Wayne and his family. I found a listing for a husband and wife that match birth year, etc, but the enumerater listed them as "Smith, ________" and "Smith, ______" AND didnt list their 4 yo son. A neighbor has a blank for the first name also. My assumption is that the info was obtained From a neighbor, even tho the x in a circle is next to the woman's listing.

Also keeps in mind that the birth places and such information can vary from census to census.

Alot of times this was due to those providing the information, but often it was a case of the census takers filling out information in advance. Maybe some cases they were lazy, some cases uncooperative or unavailable people they were trying to question, and some cases deadlines to meet.

James, your best bet is to post on the appropriate location or surname board with specific information and questions. Provide your ancestors' full names (surnames in all caps), and a synopsis of the information you have so far. Someone will then be able to point you in the right direction.

You might also consider posting on the appropriate location mailing list. RootsWeb has many! You don't say where in the UK your family lived, so I can't point you to a specific section, but see http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/UK/ and http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/ENG/ for a start.

Yes, the census taker could skip them. It happened to my grgrandparents in Everett MA. They are there in 1900, 1910, 1920, but missing in 1930 even though they lived in the same house during that time. The enumerator missed their address all together! They are enumerated in that same house in 1940. The census taker just skipped them in 1930. maybe they weren't home when he first came round and he forgot to follow up with a return visit. But they lived there and are not enumerated. So it does happen...not often, but it has happened.

I am looking at an 1880 census. The family parents the children in question are living with, are not the parents of the three children listed as 'adson' or 'addaug.' It sounds like they are added children to this household, but I haven't figured out why. The parents may be related, but I haven't been able to tie them in yet. Does anyone have a clue about the titles given?

With only a few exceptions, census records for 1801, 1811,1821, and 1831 no longer exist. The few records that do exist don't have details.

If you enter "1841 census" into your web browser you'll find several sources.

These sites contain more information about the census in England:

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/Census.html

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/census-records.ht...

If you'd like someone to do a census lookup for you, go the Census/United Kingdom, find the appropriate board for the census year, and post your inquiry there.

If you have questions about your family, post on the appropriate surname or location board. Keep in mind that posts on location boards must specifically mention that location. See Board FAQ and Board Help for more information about posting.

Good luck!

You asked the question...

"Would the census taker have tried to get information from neighbors?"

Can't answer that... but it reminded me of something...

If I can't find a family that settled in the same neighborhood ... decade after decade... I would often search for a "settled" neighbor or a family group living near the family in question.

On a few occasions, I was able to find the family I was looking for.

My biggest worry besides them being missed all together... is how they are going to be indexed...

I also subscribe to "Fold3"... and search for census records there, since the indexing is different... or better.... The indexing there is ongoing... but eventually it will be complete.

I have found that in several of my families. The case could be that the name was spelled wrong by either the census taker or the transcriber. As well as you, I have searched census records page by page because the name may not be spelled correctly in census records and the search system does not find the family. I also have several of my families which I have never found in the 1870 census records in Walker County, Alabama. The census records may not be complete. I have found duplicate records and pages in Township 12 and 15 by looking at them page by page. . . so whether pages were not scanned I do not know but the families can be found in 1850, 1860, 1880 and 1900 but not in the 1870 census record for Walker County, Alabama.

If you have any documents that you are sure of, with an address, election registers could tell you which adults lived there. They are usually held in local archives, as books or microfilm, and are dated from 1918 onwards.
Arranged by place, polling districts, then streets and housenumber. You will see the men of 21 and older and women over 30 yrs old before 1928, after that every adult of 21 and older. From 1969 18 years.
For 1918/1919 there are the Absent Voters lists, arranged the same way, where the men are listed who were away in the Army etc. Registered at their home address, with name, rank and service number.

It is limited, but it can be a help, especially if you can follow them year by year.

Loes

Skipped in the census?

How likely is it that a family would have been skipped by census takers? I'm trying to track down one family who appears in the same place (same township, same county) in 1900 and 1920, but they don't appear anywhere in the county in 1910 (I've looked through page by page).

I guess they could have moved away and then come back to the same spot, but I find that unlikely. So my question is: could they have been missed for some reason? I first thought perhaps they were out of town when the census taker came by. Does anyone know what the procedure would have been in a case like that? Would the census taker have tried to get information from neighbors?

Apologies for the vagueness,

1) I'm Inquiring for the UK and yes it is for my family research

2) any information that could corroborate details and speculations further that i already have, at the moment a lot of the birth marriage and death certs i have put people in approximate dates and vicinities etc and i would just like to see if the census data could confirm stuff.

for example say i have a death cert saying someone was born in 18xx , yet i cant find any birth certificate or there are loads to choose from, the census data could tell me that person x lived with person y and others at a certain time or place and would help me narrow the field.

3) i was given the impression that census information was sealed for 100 years after it was collected , i assumed for security reasons

again sorry for the confusion

James

Before this thread devolves into a debate about this so-called "hundred year rule," let's establish some facts.

1. For what country are you inquiring about census data and family research?

2. What types of data are you looking for?

3. What data do you think is covered by the rule and for what years are you seeking census alternatives?

4. Your single, convoluted sentence becomes indecipherable at the end. Exactly what do you mean by:
- "somwhere i can go to see the stuff"
- "where is it and whats it called"
I am not familiar with a "100 year rule." I believe there is a "72 year rule" for US Census data, and that's why the 1940 census data will be made available to the public beginning sometime next year.
