On Board Census

Would anyone know how I can access any Census taken on board a ship.
Most of my ancestors were sailors, merchant and royal navy, and I'm finding it hard to trace them on some Census. If anyone could point me in the right direction of where to search I would be most grateful. Many Thanks Jacqui

A country and a timeframe would be helpful in responding to your query.

For example, in the 1901 census for England, you can find the following:
Subseries within RG 13 - Royal navy ships
Subsubseries within RG 13 - Registration District: ROYAL NAVY AT SEA AND IN PORTS ABROAD

In 1911, the breakdown is slightly different, with the Registration Districts listed as: Australia & South Africa, China, China & East Indies, Hampshire, Mediterranean, Misc. Locations.

Sorry new to this, Trying to find a John Coulson born 1834 at Maften Northumberland.
I have found his Masters tickets but unable to find him in the census from 1861,1871,1881 ect.
It could be that he was at sea or in port on ship on census day. Its a bit of a minefield trying to locate people, but its addictive learning about the ancestors and families.
