Dual Citizenship = Dual Census Records?

Dual Citizenship = Dual Census Records?

It may be just a very strange coincidence but I've found United States and Scotland/Ireland census data for what appears to be the same family in around the same year. How does dual citizenship affect census data? Is this the same family? What if they own land/houses in both countries?

Neither citizenship nor home ownership should have any bearing on census taking. You say "in and around the same year." It's quite possible the family traveled from one country to another and just happened to be home in whichever country on the day the census was taken in that particular country.

I haven't found any travel records other than their arrival to the US and the other countries census has the names and birth dates right but are missing some of the children, which is why it's confusing. But I suppose if they owned a home there it makes sense.

My ancestors traveled back and forth across the Atlantic, having babies on both continents. I don't know if they owned homes in both countries, but they popped up on the census records of both countries. Since it's unlikely that the census was taken on the same day/month in both countries, it's very possible to appear on both countries' census records.

I've found cousins being born within a month of each other, each named James, registered in the same quarter in the same registration district and the same town, and children of fathers bearing the same names. Very, very difficult to figure those families out. You might have the same situation.

If you haven't already, why don't you post the details you do have on the pertinent location boards. Perhaps someone with local knowledge can help you figure out the puzzle.

Good luck!
