Can anyone please tell me what the name abbreviation Rd is for? On some of the census my GG grandfather is named as Rd and on others he is David. Doesn't seem right that David would be abbreviated like this so now wondering if he may have changed his name.
TIA]

I would normally interpret Rd as being short for Richard - certainly not David. Could you give a link to an example of this abbreviation, or attach an image?
Chris

Thanks Chris I was thinking the same thing. I went to get a census copy to link here and enlarged it as much as I could and realised the initials are actually Dd!! That makes sense....just the writing difficult to read.
Cheers
