Thanks! I've gone through every part of this, but can't find "Rankin Inlet North" - the area (a few hundred miles across) between Rankin Inlet, Wager Inlet, and Baker Lake. The enumerator was Charles N. C. Hayter, an RNWMP officer stationed at Fullerton.

There is a reference to it as "Schedule A I" in a letter at http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/1911/pdf/e002105384.pdf I believe.

I also found reference to it at http://www.ebooksread.com/authors-eng/canada-census-and-stat... . It reads in part: 'Report of Mr. Courtlandt Starnes. Sir — I have the honour to forward herewith my returns of the census of that part of Canada adjacent to the western shore of the Hudson Bay from Fort Churchill to the northern extremity of Melville peninsula, with the reports of the enumerators. For the better carrying out of the work I divided the district over which I was given charge into three parts, for each of which I appointed an enumerator.... ...The third was given to Sergeant C. N. C. Hayter. This covered all the country north of Ranken Inlet. The ground covered by actual travelling by this officer was one patrol from Fullerton to Wager Inlet, one from Fullerton to near Baker Lake and one to Ranken Inlet. Owing to the nomadic character of these natives in that part of the country it was useless to try and fill up the regular census forms, and a statement was made as accurately as possible from information obtained. These people have no idea whatever of their age...'

Superintendent Starnes goes on to say how he added in Hayter and his partner to his census return. (They had evidently omitted themselves.) But if you look up Charles N. C. Hayter in the available indexes (on Ancestry, for instance), he's nowhere to be found, nor anyone he recorded in his census.

So what became of Hayter's portion of the 1911 census? I found the other two subdistricts mentioned by Starnes (the second by A. F. Borden of 'Egg Island' for instance) - there's even a reference to Mr. Borden picking up Hayter's portion - but nothing from 'Rankin Inlet North'.

What happened to the returns from this area? It's a very large geographic area to go missing! Are there parts of the 1911 NWT census that were destroyed or not microfilmed?

Thanks again!
Chris

I can't find a whole geographical area in the 1911 census of the NWT. Can you help?

I've seen several references to the 1911 census of the residents (mostly Inuit) living between Rankin Inlet, Wager Inlet, and Baker Lake, in what was then NWT (now Nunavut) along the west coast of Hudson Bay. The enumerator was Charles N. C. Hayter, an RNWMP officer stationed at Fullerton.

What became of this census? I can't find it online. I see the nearby subdistrict covered by A. F. Borden ("Egg Island"), whom I read personally took the returns in from Hayter, and I see a reference to all three returns from the area being submitted, but no census.

What happened to the returns from this area? Are there parts of the 1911 NWT census that were destroyed or not microfilmed?

Thanks!
Chris

I see that you are looking for a connection between your ancestors and John Kenneth Galbraith. I looked back in the census records and see that his grandparents are John and Sarah. John, born about 1836 in Ontario, is found in the index for the 1861 census for Dunwich. There are other Galbraiths there as well...Neil, James, Duncan, Mary included. I don't have access to the images for the 1861 censuses at the moment, but I think you'll find that this record will possibly show your connection to John Kenneth.

He is listed as married, but living apart from his wife and working as a cook. I can't find his wife, but its an often misspelled name. On March 30, 1911, she married another man and is listed as being a widow. I can't find a record for the husband's death. Was the census before March 30th?

thanks

The District # is 211 District name is MooseJaw, and the Subdistrict # is 62. This is in Saskatchewan.
I have been on Archives Canada website but I can't read some of the pages. I am hoping to find someone that can take a look at the actual reels. I would be happy to pay for time and services.

Don't base your decision on which resource to use on how many ancestors show up on the census.

In script write the name Robineau. There are so many loops and valleys transcribers are bound to get it wrong many times trying to decipher individual handwriting, plus who know if enumerators wrote it correctly in the first place. The records may be there on all the sites, but just mistranscribed.

HH

Thanks

I have the same issue with Automated Genealogy. They have 35 or so Robineau's in 1911. Not much better. I know there had to be more than 35.

As i sit here and wonder about getting the Global Ancestry.com service, the fact that they give me 8 Robineau's in the 1911 Canadian census does not inspire confidence about what they would offer on a Global basis.

I may just be too cynical this afternoon.

Roger

I can accept a certain number of transcription errors, but I know for a fact that there were many more than 8 Robineau in Canada in 1911.

There were at least 18 living Robineau's in my little branmch of the Robineau family in 1911.

Any thoughts?

Roger Robineau

1911 Census lookup

I would appreciate a lookup on the 1911 census for Magnus C Hanson/Hansen. He was born Norway 1839,arrived Quebec 1865. He lived in MN, USA for several years but is believed to have returned to Canada and be living there in 1911. He may be in the household of his son Thadeus Hanson born about 1878 in MN. I have no idea where in Canada other than the fact that he landed in Quebec in 1865 and may have been familiar with the area.

Any help much appreciated. Judy

Thank you Eileen.

My g.g. grandmother is Helen E. Noble (married John Carlind of Montreal, Quebec; we presume the marriage took place between 1906 and 1908, but have yet to find a record.
She was born September, 1886 and died 16 August 1946 at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

I attached the census record that has her birthplace listed as E-W. On this record she is the wife of John Carlind, and goes by Nelly.

Let me know if you need anything more.
Much thanks,
ACK

? E-W abbreviation for birthplace on 1911 Canadian Census

The 1911 Canadian Census record - Montreal, Quebec - for my g.g. grandparents lists my g.g. grandmother's birthplace as "E-W". Other information that may help is: her year of immigration is listed as 1906, her racial or tribal origin is listed as "irlandaise", her nationality as "canadian". We knew she was not born in Canada like her husband or her children. We always thought she was Irish but no one living remembers anything about how she arrived in Montreal. Any insight into the E-W abbreviation would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Could some kind and clever person please find a family for me on the 1906 and/or 1911 Canadian census? I've tried every variation of the name I can imagine and still haven't found them. They arrived in Canada in 1904, so they should be on both censuses. They farmed at Fish Creek which I understand is in the Batoche area, near Rosthern, Saskatchewan. The surname is correctly spelled BUKOWSKY but....
Their forenames and dates of birth are as follows -
Balteser 1854
Elizabeth 1863
Joseph 1885
Ferdinand (Fred) 1887
Wilhelmina (Minnie) 1894
Jacob 1897
Peter 1905

It's possible that in 1906 Fred was already working on the railroad, but where is the rest of the family?
In 1911, I CAN find Fred already married (in the Prince Albert area) and Joe is visiting him, but I cannot find the family on the farm. Any help would be MOST welcome. Thank you. Florence
