Has anyone heard of a Burnett Plantation Cemetery in Essex County VA? John Burnett, my 7th great grandfather, who was the first Burnett to VA, was supposedly buried there. According to my information, John was born 25 Dec. 1610 in Aberdeen, Scotland. Died Feb. of 1686 in Old Rappahannock, VA.

John Burnett born 1610 in Aberdeen, SCT and Lucretia Johns(t)on lived at Burnett Plantation on Piscataway Creek near Tappahannock, Virginia in what is now Essex County but was then South Farnham Parish. I understand John died in1686 and was buried at the plantation and that later his wife was also interred there. I am trying very hard to find out exactly where the cemetery or even just the plantation was located. Several people are helping me search. I want to go there and walk exactly where they walked. A map in one of June Bork's books The Burnetts and Their Connections indicates that it was located at the west end of Piscataway Creek. Land records refer to trees and other peoples property on both the north and south sides of the creek. If you determine exactly where-please let me know. Also I am attempting to determine if John lived in Upper Norfolk county for several years before he married Lucretia or if he just owned land there and lived in Europe...Also interested in exact location on Hoskins Creek of John and Amee Gatewood. Their daughter, Amy, married, John Burnett, the son of John and Lucretia. Please keep in touch as I tend to lose info and crash computers regularly-haha!

Joyce, anxiously awaiting any further info on the Burnette Cemetery and possible location of John and Lucretia Burnett. Is your Webb name a descendent of Amanda Webb who was the wife of John Henry Burnett? John H. was my 3rd great grandfather on my dad's side of the family. Also can't find where either of them are buried or John's father, Rufus King, is buried. Believe both in KY, John maybe somewhere in McCracken County. Thanks for any help. Barb

Thank you for your reply! Am still seeking location of Burnett Plantation Cemetery where John Burnett and wife Lucretia Johnston were buried on Piscataway Creek, south of Tappa hannock, in what is now Essex County but in early 1700's was South Farnaham Parish. My family wants to visit the site of the plantation and, if it can be located, the cemetery. Webb was my married name, however on another side of the family my Civil War era grandpa was Anderson Webb. I also wonder where John lived from 1635 when he made his first trip over until he married Lucretia-in 1657-when he owned land in what is now Suffolk City. Did he live there, Scotland or Tappahannock? Also looking for home site and burial sites of John Gatewood and his wife Amee who lived on Hoskins Creek. John Junior married their daughter.

Janet, Could you tell me what towns the Burnett Cemetery & Plantation are located in? Terri

Essex County, Tappahannock is the town. Was Old Rappahanock county and South Farnham Parish. Virginia.

Is there a later Harlow connection in here? Edmund Harlow married a Barnett and I am trying to establish if they were the parents of Thomas Harlow b. 1812 KY. These parents came from the Albemarle Co. area of VA. Does anyone know of a connection? Terri

Terri, The Burnett family plantation and cemetery no longer exist. The closest I could come was to a church called Mt. Zion Church off of Route 360 between King & Queen County and Essex County, Va. It is near Piscataway Creek or what is left of the creek. I went to the Essex County Court House and had a discussion with a lady working there. It seem there has been a lot of interest lately in the Burnett name from that area. She showed me on a map where the plantation would have been located and it is right about the same area of this Mt. Zion church. She is of the same thoughts of mine that the cemetery and plantation have long been plowed over and covered with other things and road. That is a shame but our ancestors from the 1600's have very few visiable plots left. Hope this helps. Are you connected to this branch of Burnett's? If so let me know. I am connected through the branch that moved to Caroline County. I can send you information if you want to contact me via jtennent@starpower.netThanks Janet

Thanks, Janet. I just got back from a research trip to VA two days ago. I won't go again for another couple of years. I am trying to find out if my Harlow family is related to the Burnett family through a marriage that would have taken place around 1800 VA with a move within ten years to KY. Don't have certain names. I am just trying to establish that now. I thought cemetery records would help. I have seen a lot of records for Burnetts back to the 1600s. Terri
