Went to Tappahannock, Va last fall to search for clues about Burnetts and Gatewoods who lived in South Farnham Parish in the 1600s. Hoped to find where Burnett Plantation had been [where they are buried]. The Piscataway Creek was beautiful!
Does anyone have an idea where the plantations were located?
John Burnett married Amy Gatewood.

I have been there twice and really enjloyed myself. Went to the courthouse and got leads and then got in the car with my maps and GPS and Tomtom and tried to locate where approximately the Burnetts lived and owned land. I am not sure of my information. Still putting datat together. Looks like it may have been just north of Miller's TAvern on Latane's Mill Road and also north of there where Bloomsbury plantation was located. There is an area on latanes Mill Road called Elton Burnett that has been in the John Haile family for at least 5 generations but was built by a Burnett-if you find out which Burnett let me know. The builders son, Joseph Burnett married a Winnifred ---------- and they lived there. I have copies of plats from Essex County listing property of numerous Burnetts but it refers to trees and creeks-very hard to pinpoint today....Maybe we could get a group of interested people together there sometime and we could explore together....

Hi!

Just looking through this thread and wondered if you found any more info on the location of the Burnett plantation and cemetery. I was in Essex County a few weeks ago but only made it to the museum and spoke with the lady and gentleman who run the historical society. Interested in going back down soon for more detailed driving tour of the area where the Burnett's lived back in 1600's. I saw one reply that indicated the area had been plowed over and that Mt Zion church is in that nearby area now.

I'm a descendant of Jonathan Burnett. Some of the Burnett's migrated to Bedford County VA then down to Carroll County VA. My grandparents moved from Carroll County to Indiana where I was born. I now live in Virginia and amazed at how much Burnett history is here. I too would be interested in a group exploration event if others are up for it.

btw- The "e" didn't start showing up at the end of our Burnett name until the 1930's. We aren't sure why.

Interested in meeting, emailing other Burnett's and to share info about the family history. Feel free to email me any time.

The information in my posted 14 Jul 2006 is partially correct re: John Henry Burnett and his wife Amanda Webb Burnett. After traveling to Paducah, KY, Rufus King is not the father of my ancestor John Henry. John Henry is my grt. grt. grandfather, born abt. 1842 in Kentucky--I don't know where. After searching for many years I still am unable to find any record of him and his family before or after the 1880 US Census when they were in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Does anyone know anything about these two individuals??
