I've lived in Hempstead my whole life. My grandmother was raised here as well as her grandparents and their parents also. I had a school project to do for history when I was in school and I interviewed her that's when I started learning about our family's history in this town. We do still have have a cemetery dedicated to the McDade's but (I don't think it's the original but some stones date back to the 1800s) my great grandparents as well as other family members are still being buried there till this day.The Liendo Plantation is a tourist attraction they do a civil war reenactment every year. It is still hundreds of us McDade's still living in the Waller County area. I've been researching this is how I came upon this site. Very helpful info. I will try to get pictures when I get home from college.

not all graves have markers and some are double stacked. your best bet is to find their death certificate. spelling is really bad so check with variations. just to give you an idea my weaver family has weaver, wivar and weaber all in graytown; and my grandmother's death certificate is under weever. the olivares family was buried close to the front entrance, i dont recall a felicita garza but i will check when i go in june.

Okay, I'll wait to hear from you. One of my cousins has been to Oakwood and she said she feels sure that Robert M. Brooks is buried next to his wife Margaret Brooks and she does have a headstone. She was born Jan. 16, 1857 and died Aug. 22, 1882. That info may help.

Thanks for your help, and all that you are doing to help Oakwood Cemetery.

Vida Hughes

But I'm sure it will be 'cause that's not that old of a tombstone.

Linda my great-grandfather Robert M. Brooks is buried there, but I have never been able to visit. He was born Dec. 18, 1841 and died Feb. 5, 1924 in Dennison. I have had several others tell me that it is a disaster. I live in Dallas and have wanted to visit it for years, but it has just never happened. It is the oldest cemetery in Dennison and seems to be the worst cared for. I have talked to a lady that worked there in the office but no help. one relative did go there and found one of Robert's wives headstone and told me that it was obvious he was buried beside her but there was no headstone for him. He fought in the civil from 1861 until he was paroled by the Federal Forces at Point Lookout where he had been a prisoner. Then he had to start the long walk back home to New Albany, MS.

Nice hearing from you, Vida Hughes

I'd love to be a part of the work, but I'm in California, and a trip to TX isn't in the budget right now. And you don't know how much your offering to try & get those funeral records excites me! My ggrandpa died in 1890 & his wife 1902. I'm greatly indebted to you.

There is a funeral home in Denison that has burial records back to 1870s but I will have to contact them and see when I can come and scan their records.
Maybe my volunteer is out at Oakwood these pretty days, at last, and taking more pictures at Oakwood. If you look at the GC site and Oakwood cem you will see the map and he is working in section 2 right now.
I also was told that there is a Jewish section in Oakwood; do you know anything about that?

My Grandmother joined the Daughters of the Republic of Texas in 1929. Who can I contact to set up installing the DRT emblem on her tombstone at Edgewood Cemetery in Zavala County Texas near Crystal City Texas? Whom also can I ship the emblem to in that area? I would as her grandson like to be present when the emblem is installed. Can not find how to get this done. Please respond to who I can contact to complete the process of my grandmother being recognized as a member listed in the first volume of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
I've read your concerns & comments about Oakwood Cem in Denison. I am the new county coordinator for Grayson Co. TXGenWeb as of Dec. 2012. At present there is a volunteer who is taking photographs of the cemetery's markers, section by section. He has sent me photographs of tombstones that the names are not listed on the current index. Also there are lots of errors in names & dates. The link has changed from what has been listed before. Watch online as the progression of surveying & photographing the cemetery continues. Also if anyone has a Death certificate as proof of burial, I will be glad to enter that information.

Amanda died in Monkstown Tx in 1904, leaving husband William Thomas Tallant, children: Claud, Oscar Floyd, Zettie, and William Earnest. Amanda was preceeded in death by son Clyde 6months old.
Still looking for marriage information of Amanda and William, could have wed in either Tennessee, or Texas or somewhere along the way. Amanda is assumed to be buried in Monkstown Cemetery, but there are NO records to definately say she was buried there, and NO marker. Monkstown assumed because she lived outside of town that she was buried there.

Cedar Point Cemetery will be holding their annual meeting on April 21, 2013 at the Adams St. Community Center in Brownwood, Texas, 511 East Adams St. Relatives are highly encouraged to attend.
Proposed agenda—

Cedar Point Cemetery Association
Annual Meeting
April 21, 2013

Member and visitor sign in

Call to order

Minutes of meeting 2012—Glenda Griffin
Changes or amendment
Approval

Treasures Report—Charles Newsom
Changes or amendment
Approval

Report on Maintenance—Dona Delso
Burials
Costs past and projected+
Walk gate and culvert installed
Drive thru gate locked with combination lock

Status of Plots—Gladys Newsom

Old business

New business
Election of Treasurer

Next meeting—3rd Sunday 2014 is Easter Sunday

Reserve room for 2014, date?? @ 2 PM, board meeting at 1:30 PM

Adjourn

We need to encourage attendance at the meeting and participation in the organization. I am not sure how to do this, but contact with relatives and notices in the local newspapers could help. Also contact with genealogical organizations might help (Pecan Valley in Brownwood is one).

We need a treasurer for the organization. Be thinking of someone who can fill this role. It may take some encouragement to get a person to accept the responsibility and job. Encourage anyone who would be willing to be the treasure to attend the meeting.

Cedar Point Cemetery Association is a nonprofit organization that is supported by the efforts of the families who have loved ones buried in the cemetery. It is imperative that families participate and become involved in the association in order to keep the association functioning.

EDGAR Family Cemetery in DeWitt County

EDGAR Family Cemetery
Decoration Day 2013

A Decoration Day at the old EDGAR Family Cemetery is scheduled for Saturday, April 6th. The cemetery is remote, on private land, near the location of the old Edgar family homestead in the Edgar community, between Cuero and Yoakum. The Edgar family’s first-born son, Joseph Smith Edgar, was a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21,1836 (almost 177 years ago).

The cemetery dates to 1863 when the first burial is believed to have occurred there. The James Edgar family had moved to DeWitt County, TX from Maury County, TN in late 1853 to settle on a third of a league of land (1,476.1 acres) which was a first class headright grant, awarded to their first-born child, Joseph Smith Edgar, for his presence in Texas prior to the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence on 02 Mar 1836. Ten children are known to have been born to James Edgar and his wife, Selah Witherington, between 1818 and 1835. There were nine boys and one girl, and they all came to Texas.

The 17-year-old Joseph came first, in late 1835. He joined the Texas Army, and he was a member of Capt. Robert Calder's Infantry Company K, 1st Regiment, Texas Volunteers at the Battle of San Jacinto. In addition to the headright grant described above, Joseph was also awarded a donation grant of 640 acres for his service at the Battle of San Jacinto and a bounty grant of 320 acres for his service in the Texas Army in general.

Unfortunately, Joseph died before he ever saw any of the land he had earned. He died 09 Jul 1837 at the home of Capt. James Gibson Swisher on the Swisher Farm near the Old Gay Hill community in Washington County. Capt. Swisher was a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and he was from the same area in middle Tennessee as was the Edgar family.

In addition to Edgar family members, numerous other burials occurred in the old EDGAR Family Cemetery of relatives by marriage and of friends and neighbors. Some of the surnames of those known to have been buried in the cemetery include: Abel, Batchelor, Bates, Bell, Bennett, Bouldin, Brown, Carr, Dikes, Donnell, Duke, Dykes, Edgar, Farquhar, Hadley, Hugo (or von Hugo), Jacobs, Ladd, Lee, Luce, Mahler, McAdoo, McCormick, McMeen, Means, Mikes, Mikesh, Murphey, Newsome, Nyegaard, Odom, Pincham, Powers, Pridgen, Rackley, Reader, Robinson, Skeen, Sparkman, Strown, Taylor, Welch, Witherington and Young.

There will be two 3-hr work sessions at the cemetery, one in the morning and one in the afternoon and a visitation period in early afternoon for those unable to attend either work session. A lunch at a local restaurant will include an organizational meeting aimed at forming an EDGAR Family Cemetery Association (“EFCA”) with the objectives of restoring, regularly tending, and preserving the cemetery.

Anyone interested in attending a work session, the visitation at the cemetery and/or the luncheon should contact the EDGAR Family Cemetery Association via email at EFCA1853@gmail.com. More information about the cemetery, the EFCA, and Decoration Day 2013 can be found at the cemetery’s website at http://parkerhannah.com/EdgarFamilyCemetery/Welcome.html.
Vida, yes, it is sad that this cemetery has gotten into such a poor state and you can't find your g-grandpa's actual gravesite. I was able to visit very briefly in 2008 & took pics. My husband is the one who actually found my gg-grandma's grave. Many headstones are still standing, but some are broken, lying on the ground due to the large tree roots. Others are worn from the elements & barely readable, if at all. If I lived in Denison, I would volunteer to help care for this cemetery. Not sure how I could improve it, but I'd give it a good try. Perhaps one day the burial records might show up...we can always hope. If not, I guess we'll just have to wait until the resurrection and meet our ancestors in person!

This is terrible that no one seems to care about the cemetery and its records are lost. My gggrandmother Mahala Manley is buried there in a family plot, along with one of her daughters & her family. I was able to find their headstones, but not my grandmother's or grandfather's. They may be in unmarked graves. I tried searching when I was there in 2008 with no luck at all. Their names were Ben Ogle & Rachael "Emma" Ogle, & another daughter Geneva Ogle. He died 1891 & both women in 1902 or 1904...I forget at the moment. I've been searching for their graves for a long time, but didn't know all the records have been lost.

I lived in Bloomington for about 20 years. There is one off of Black Bayou Rd #2, thats where my father is buried, and also there are graves on Black bayou rd #1 that not many know about! its on a property next to the gravel road and has names on the stones. I dont recall the names, but they date back to the 1700's. I know one was a baby or infant grave. This is not listed so it may be the owners of that land. I will try to look up a name for you and post back here when I find out their names.

Familysearch shows a death certificate for Amanda Huston Connell, born November 10, 1908; died April 30, 1958. Is this your Amanda?
If so, the certificate says she was buried in Greenwood Cemetery on May 3, 1958.

There's a memorial for her on findagrave.com:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GScid=2...;
It was posted by Susan Oliver, who says Amanda was her grandmother's sister.
