I am looking for the burial location of Elisha Elzie Christesson who was shot and killed by a drifter while away from home[lived in Picketville,Stephens Co Tx]on a cattle drive.

He was killed at Camp Colorado Tx [between Brownwood and Coleman TX].I was told he is buried there and that there is a historical marker close to the highway, near the grave site.

Any help is appreciated.

Sincerely,
Sam

Hi, I have lived in the area that you are discribing in Texas. There are several markers in this area. I don't remember ever seeing anything about a Colorada Camp. There are two Towns between Brownwood and Coleman and they are Bangs and Santa Anna, but there are all these little settlements that are off the main road. My brother use to work for the Texas H.W.D. so maybe he has seen it. I am going to Brownwood very shortly to check some cemeteries. I shall ask around and see if any of this sounds familiar and I shall let you know. Or you might check back in about a month to remind me as sometime I get to much going at once and forget who I am to check back with. Hope I can help. Bertha

Hi Sam,
I just wanted you to know that I haven't forgotten about looking for your gravesite. I just haven't made it there yet. I have talked to my daughter that lives in Brownwood and her husband has lived in Coleman all his life. So when I go down, he will know where to direct me or will probably go with me. So maybe some info soon. Bertha Tyson

Bertha,Thanks!

Hi, I made my trip to Brownwood this Week-end and did find the site of your Camp Colorado. I took some pictures, although, I had to do it through a wire fench. So some of the writing might be obscured by the wires. I copied all the inscription down just in case it does not show well. A house is near the site and by the structure shape it appears it might have been an old Fort. I took pictures of the area to give you a general idea of the site. It is quiet deserted area and I can quiet picture a cattle drive in that area years ago.
The directions to the area is to take Hwy. 84 from Brownwood to Coleman and you come to a little town called Santa Anna. As you come into Santa Anna there is a F.M. road 1176 that you take to the North. This road zigs and zigs for 11 miles and then you take a C.R. 140 (which is just a dirt road) and go about 4 mile. You will cross a very old bridge, which goes across a creek and very shortly after that you will see a house on the left and the marker is just before the house.
If you would like to have the pictures when I get them developed, you may send me your address to my personal e-mail address that I will include in this note.
Needless to say it was a very enjoyable trip. I not only found your site, but also one of my relatives in an old historical cemetery near your site. So I want to say thank you for putting your request up as I benefitted from it also and had a very nice day. So Thanks Bertha

Bertha - Saw your posting. AM looking for my ggrandmother's gravesite. She died about 1887 with birth of her second child in Brownwood Texas. Her name was Margaret (Pruitt) Jones (bn about 1860). If you haven't searched that cemetery area yet, would you mind looking for my ancestor too? How many cemeteries are there in that area? If you can help, I'd appreciate it! Lois

Hi Lois,
I don't actually live in Brownwood now, but my daughter still does. I live in San Angelo, Tx., and I go to visit her frequently. I made a trip about two weeks ago and wish I had known of your request then, as we made visits to several cemeteries. But there are a lot of cemeteries there. At least 57 that I know of. When I go back I will be glad to look through some of them for you. But in the mean time I am going to send you an address that you may want to contact that is someone that lives in the area. Her name is at the bottom of the web site and it looks like Brownwood has been doing a lot of work to identify many grave sites and she might be able to help you more than I.
Also by any chance, did your Pruitt's come from Mississippi? I show some Pruitt's coming to Texas with mine and many other families from Mississippi in the mid to late 1800's. Just curious. Let me know what you find out from this site that I am sending and I will let you know if I find anything.

Classification: Query
The findagrave memorial for his son, Elisha Levi Christesson says he is buried in Saints Rest Cemetery, and has a triple headstone, for father, mother and son. The son and wife of Elisha Levi are listed in Saints Rest, but not the parents, so I guess the trip stone was for Elisha Levi and wife and son.
