Vincent Tucker Is Buried HERE
Just recently discovered my genealogy. I'm a direct descendent of John May. Recipient of a Mexican land grant in Dewitt's colony 1835. He donated land to the City of Yoakum, The SAAP railroad, and the Catholic Church for a Church, School and Graveyard. The Catholic Church sold this property out right. All deeds show this reference of the School Graveyard and Church. John May is reference in Historical Markers in Yoakum, Lavaca County. My problem is with his grave sight, or lack there of. It is mentioned at the Yoakum libary as Supplejack Cemetery. I was showed the cemetery. There are only three gravestones, (turned over and broken) none of witch is John May. I am told that there is as many as 20 to 25 Graves here. These are out in a brushy pastor. The land owner told me that I could come and go there at any time. What I need to know is what my next step should be to fix this disgraceful problum

Yes this is the John May. Where did you find this?
John May and family fled to Nacadoches during the Runaway Scrape 1836 and stayed there about three years, before returning home to to his land grant in Lavaca and DeWitt County. I have ben looking for information connecting him to Nacadoches at this period in time.
John's daughter Mary Ann May mared Henry Vollentine in Nacadoches around that time.

Hello, this message is in response to Thad May and his search for information on John May. I have spent the last two years researching our ancestor.
I am a writer and the GGG grand daughter of John May on my mothers side.

I am writing a book about Texas Irish immigrants and of course our ancestor is part of it. I am also including a section detailing his part in the runaway scrape and of course the Chisholm trail.

I was very upset when I saw the pictures that you posted of the old Supplejack cemetary. I am planning to travel to Yoakum to sit with two historians there and San Patricio, La Grange to fill in blanks. You would think that the founder of Yoakum would at least rate having his tomb stone in some tact.

I have several geneology sheets on John and Mary May. I also have a friend that works for The University of Texas that helps me when I reach a block in the road.

Our ancestor was a very interesting person and I have enjoyed learning of him so much. Did you know that his name can be found on the Flax Growers bounty list of 1796.

I have a blog about the book that can be found at Undiscovered writer.com " The flax growers Tale"

So glad that our ancestors are being remembered its important not to forget and to teach our children.

Not the same John May

Supplejack Cemetery

YOAKUM, LAVACA COUNTY, TEXAS

Also Known as First Yoakum Catholic Church Cemetery

According to Sammy Tise, the Yoakum area's first Catholic Church was located about three miles east of Yoakum on the road from Austin to Indianola where it crossed Supplejack Creek. The church was founded in 1850 and was disbanded nineteen years later. A 199 acre tract for a church, school, and cemetery was deeded to the Bishop of Galveston on April 24 1854 by Mary Ann Riley May, widow of John May. Portions where later sold by the church.

Only three markers exist in the cemetery where the church was located, although at least two other people are known to be buried there. The earliest marker is for Thomas F. Moore who was born in Perry County, Missouri and died 7 July 1857.

Photographs and information about the May deed contributed by Thad A. May. Photographs were taken in October 2009. Click on marker photos for larger view.
