Old Davis Cemetery in White County

Old Davis Cemetery in White County

Hi,

I'm conducting research for a book, and I need to visit an old cemetery in White County. It's called the Davis Cemetery, and I think it's located in Big Bottom somewhere. I cannot locate it without the address, and all I have been able to find are two Davis cemeteries that don't seem to be in the right area of the county.

If you can help, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you.

Jan,

When the White County Genealogical Historical Society re-surveyed all the cemeteries that we could locate, we
have four Davis Cemeteries. The Davis Cemetery, Scott's Gulf, seems to be the only Davis cemetery in the area you are searching. All the cemeteries in White County were re-surveyed starting in the Spring of 2001and went to the Printer in Sept 2003.

The directions to this Davis Cemetery, copied from the Cemetery Book, is -

DAVIS CEMETERY
Scott's Gulf
Location:
In woods near the base of the south wall of Scott's Gulf where Big Bottom Rd. turns sharply northeast, 2.5 miles east of junction Hickory Valley Rd., take dirt road eastward along the river. Four wheel drive required. Stay on north bank of river for 2.1 miles, then cross with the road. At 3.5 miles from the Big Bottom Rd., park and take foot trail 0.2 miles southeast to graveyard. (49.547' 35 degree N. 85 degrees 19.947' W.)

Description: Mowed clearing in woods. Old graves, including 21 tent-style graves, 2 with flat slabs, many without inscriptions. Some granite monuments added since last survey.

Surveyed: 1993 by Wilsie Davis Dodson. Additional annotation by Fred Leroy Clark. Field checked 2001
by Bill & Mary Colley.

Hope this helps.

Jan,
I was in the Big Bottom area and attempted to locate this cemetery but was not successful. It is a extremely remote area with no homes or buildings for several miles. The narrow roads run thru dry rivers and creekbeds. There are mudholes a foot deep in several areas. The road is made mostly of loose round rocks from baseball size to bigger than basketballs. There are many side roads and trails and it is difficult to find where you are going. I would advise a rugged off road vehicle such as a Jeep or four-wheeler and it would be well to have a local guide. If you need further information you may contact me at TnPeeps@aol.com

John,

Thank you for the information. Based on what you've said, I intend to postpone my trip to that cemetery until fall in hopes that with the foliage gone (not to mention snakes), I'll be able to get there. That will also give me time to find an off-road vehicle. I've looked the location up on Google Earth, and it certainly shows some difficult terrain. However, I have to visit that cemetery for my research. In the meantime, I have plenty of other research to finish.

By the way, I heard that two people were buried at the Davis Cemetery in the past year and that they were transported to the cemetery by four-wheel vehicles. Do you know if that's true or not?

If you have any other information, I would really appreciate it.

I was just there today. (7-28-07) It was very hard to get to, remote location. It was over an hour by 4 wheel drive Jeep. I don't think you could make it if the river is running in the winter. (You have to cross the river). Very nice place, We saw one grave that was dug in 1830. Feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions.

Thank you for the information. I would love to visit that cemetery, and I intend to go in a couple of months. Another person who posts on here has also been there, and he provided me with pictures of the graves, which included my great, great grandparents' headstones and great, great, great grandparents' headstones on my dad's side of the family. My dad has told me so much about life in Big Bottom that it's hard to imagine a complete town was once in that area.

Did you rent the Jeep you drove? If so, where? I've looked on the Internet for rentals in Sparta, TN, but was unable to find anything. My dad said he'd loan me his four-wheel truck, but it's one of those big Dodge pickups with wide fenders, and I really don't want to bring his truck back with the fenders scraped or missing entirely!

My e-mail addresses are: jschipper8@hotmail.com or jan.schipper@volstate.edu

Again, thank you for the information.

Surnames: Benton, Coppage, McDonald, Martin, Neal
My name is Titiana Benton, I am doing research on my relatives that lived in Sparta, TN. Most of them were buried in Davis Cemetary in White County. In July 2004, Ethel L. Benton was buried there. When I attended the services there, I also found out that some other relatives were there as well. Edna Lizze Coppage, Lacy McDonald Shockley, Clara McDonald, and Donae Mae Henderson.
I think more of them are there. I am looking for Anna Neal McDonald, Charles P. McDonald, John McDonald, Winnie McDonald, Jonas Coppage and lots of others. I spoke to someone from Hunters Funeral Home today, they told me to contact you for help with my geneology research. Do you know who the caretaker is for this cemetary? Can you help me with my search?

There are three or four Davis cemeteries in White County, and the only one that has my relatives in it is not the same cemetery you are referring to. I have photographs of all of the headstones and grave markers for the Davis Cemetery in Scott's Gulf, which is where my ancestors are buried, and there aren't any Bentons.

I'm so sorry I couldn't be of help.
