These are three (indexed) cemetery deed books which contain information on transfers, lot location, sellers and purchases, dates of sales, and prices of lots; and three volumes of interments, 1846-81, in rough alphabetical order listing name, age, sex, race, residence, cause of death, and other remarks. Included is a list of prominent persons buried in the cemetery.

The records of this Davidson County cemetery consist of interment files.
At the end of the records are the burial files of black people who did not own lots, although the records of those who owned lots are interfiled with the rest of the cards.

The City Cemetery records were compiled by Dr. T. V. Woodring, Director of Health, City of Nashville, 1948.

The material is divided by year, then alphabetically by surname. Records include date of death, age, sex, color, cause of death, and location of grave.
A brief history of the cemetery is also included.

HISTORIC NASHVILLE CITY CEMETERY

Nashville City Cemetery is located at 1001 Fourth Avenue South
at the corner of Fourth Ave South and Oak St in Nashville Tenn.
Near I-65 & I-40. Parking within the cemetery is quite limited.
Open daily for public visitation from Dawn to Dusk.

Opened in 1822, City Cemetery is the oldest continuously
operated public cemetery in Nashville, Tennessee.

City Cemetery was listed in the National Register of Historic Places
in 1972 because of its historical and architectural significance.
