Old Witten Cemetery in Tripp County South Dakota
I am trying to find information on the Old Witten Cemetery in Tripp County. This is the protestant cemetery, not the Catholic cemetery. Someone suggested this might be the Red Hill Cemetery, but the locations don't match. The legal description according to Rootsweb is Blk 52 of NE 1/4, 21-100-78.
I understand that it used to be located south east of the Old Witten. This town no longer exists. The town was moved in 1929. According to Rootsweb, it is an abandoned cemetery. It is being used as a pasture. The headstones were piled along the fence line, but not any longer.
We believe that some of the graves were relocated, but not all. I am trying to discover if my great grandfather, Johann Brickman was relocated or not.
We don't know where the relocated graves were moved. We can't find anyone with the cemetery records.
The Luthern church indicates date of death and that Johann Brickman was probably buried at the Old Witten Cemetery.
We have tried the WPA cemetery records for Tripp County. We have also tried the County Assessor's office and the Tripp County Register of Deeds. They do not have any records.
I am looking for any suggestions.
Thanks!

Re: Old Witten Cemetery in Tripp County South Dakota
Hi Cindy, I believe you are looking for the address of the old Witten Cemetary. A relative gave me a copy of a plat book that shows where the cemetary is located. If you give me an address, I can scan and e-mail it too you. She also sent some pictures of the actual cemetary. There isn't much to see. Just one blank headstone, some timbers dividing the grave sites, and an old section of fence. The Catholic cemetary is still there. The Old Witten cemetary is located about 1/2 mile away in someone's pasture. I would suggest getting permission before entering.

What is your e-mail? My husband grew up in that area and I think he could help you possibly find where the graves were relocated.
