CEMETERY FINDING PROJECT

CEMETERY FINDING PROJECT

About three months ago, my friend Gary Flynn and I decided to GPS map all the known cemeteries in the State of SC. At first, that sounded like am impossible task to us. However, since April we have a tremendous amount of progress! If you visit http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/southcarolina/sc-graves/sc..., you’ll be able to view what progress we have made.

Twenty-five counties have been completed and 21 are in their final stages. We are currently using about 8 different resources to determine estimated cemetery GPS locations that will normally put you within eyesight of the cemeteries.

We hope that you’ll find a use for this info. Please tell others about this webpage.

Paul,

Hey. Thanks for all the work you do for SC researchers. I will look through my files, but I have photographed every tombstone in the Kennemore/Mauldin/Odell cemetery that is quite off the beaten path, the one you have numbered P078. If you'll e-mail me directly with how I can best get the photos to you for inclusion, that'd be great. My e-mail address is my first name, the first initial of my last name (no spaces or underscore) at the provider mindspring.com.

That cemetery is in terrible shape, so I'd love to have the images online for posterity for our future researchers.

Do you have instructions on how to index a cemetery or where I can find instructions? I have photos of many of the tombstones at Six Mile Baptist and Mt Olivet Wesleyan but have not attempted to index or map the graves. It might take me several trips to get it finished since I live in Georgia buy my parents live within walking distance of both churches.

There are several cemeteries you could be describing. Please post the name and dates of the person you are looking for and I'll see if I can help you or find someone who can.

I was looking for info on Thomas Funderburk 1855-1938 and his wife Charity 1861-1925 who should be at the Laney cemetary. My mother had mentioned that old man Laney had let the animals out into the cemetery and that the horses, cows, etc. destroyed some of the markers. Do you have photos that you would share? My email is bevysc@netzero.com. Thanks.
