Hello Marilyn,
I am not sure of how much help I can be to you. My ancestors were from the area a little south of Skalat and I am looking for info about them (Tovste/Borki-Male/Hlibow/Podlesie-Grzymalow areas.....)
But I can try to be of some help.....You said your ancestors from Skalat area but I can't recognize the towns/villages you list. Spelling correct? Are you looking for vital records of your kin thru the LDS? Did you try looking the villages up on a map as being near Skalat? My email address is signemary@yahoo.com if you wish to email me. I can send you a story I downloaded about history of Skalat and surrounding towns which I can send to you via attachment if you email me back...also on Polishroots.org are maps...please email me....Marcia

Marcia. I hope I can jump in here. This is my first try and reading your notes gave me some hope. My family came from a village called (phoneticallly) Czernoliwka (near Piedvolochest), Skalat. They were babpized in the Roman Catholic Church in the diocese of Leopolieusis(?)--their spellibng for the village is Hucuruniwka). My grandparents names on my mother's side were Roman Masly and Victoria Worobec. On my father's side: Bartholomew Mikivitz (or Mikitowicz), Anna Draj (or Dray). Is there an address for someone at an archives that could help me in my search? Are there any options? Marilybn

You can look at all the internments for that cemetery at findagrave.com
Just go to cemetery look ups, put in the cemetery you want than go to view all internments and you can see if your family is there. There are 3,051 listed graves there

Sorry I do not know the section. It was off the entrance road--headed left-about 1/2 to 2/3 a way down. The tombstone is not far off the road. It is not a stone that lays down on the ground but is upright with the four names that I listed.

Thank you very much for trying to find it. I remember going through the cemetery as a little boy after going to the movie downtown on Saturday.

Thanks for trying

Jim Morgan

Hi Jim,

I was able to take a quick drive through Oak Grove Cemetery to look for your family's headstone, but was unable to find it. Do you happen to know what section they are located in? This would help in the search. It was raining today so I didn't have the chance to spend too much time there, but I plan on going at some point next week to look again.

Holly

Ref: Walnut Hill Cemetery, Pawtucket, RI

My grandparents and two uncles are buried in Oak Grove Cemetery off-entrance at 227 Central Avenue in Pawtucket.

Can anyone who lives in the area be so kind as take a photo of both sides of the tombstone and send them to me?

I was born in Pawtucket in 1939 and lived not very far from the cemetery. As a kid I use to walk through the cemetery on the way home after going to a movie in downtown Pawtucket. When my mother died in December 1949.

I was put in a State Home and later a foster home. My foster family moved to Miami Florida in 1954. All of my Morgan relatives who I knew growing up that lived in the Pawtucket area are either deceased or moves out of the area.

As you enter the cemetery from Central Avenue you take a left headed toward Apex Tire (don't know if Apex is still there). My mind is a little fuzzy after all these years but I believe the grave is about half to two thirds a way toward Apex.

The grave is near that entry road----and has a tall headstone with:

William Morgan died December 10, 1944 (My grandfather-born March 7, 1874 in Scotland)

Christina Morgan died September 23, 1932 (My grandmother-died on my father's birthday-born October 27, 1873 in Scotland)

Charles Morgan died October 27, 1944 (My oldest uncle-orn December 19, 1898 in Scotland)

David Morgan died March 16, 1971 (My uncle-next to the youngest-born January 1, 1907 in Scotland)

It is close to the corner of the entry road and a road that heads into the cemetery. I recall that the tombstone can be seen from that entry road.

I'm sure glad that Oak Grove Cemetery is kept up better than Walnut Hill.

Jim Morgan

Salt Lake City
I had the chance to stop at the cemetery yesterday and looked for quite a while trying to locate them. Unfortunately I was not able to. I do plan on continuing my search.
They are not buried together. He is buried in the "single persons" part of the cemetery, T-4, # 8. If you enter at the public works part of the cemetery, go down the hill, and it is toward the back of the cemetery. It is probably listed "Frederick Kuspert", but might be "Frederick Kusqsed", or "Kispert". i'm not sure why!! Thanks!

Hi Martha,

I'm sorry you are having a hard time locating the grave. I will definitely keep a lookout for you. Do you know if it's a raised headstone or more of a flat stone?

My great grandmother is also in the pauper section. Her headstone looks like it is at the edge of the cemetery near the apartments, however it really isn't. There are actually headstones hidden in the overgrowth behind. It's hard to see at this time, but they are visible when the leaves fall from the tree branches. This section is to the left of the fenced in area. Sadly, some of the stones have been toppled over also.

I should be there this week. I'm still searching for some of my relatives there, one being in the children's section which is overgrown as well. I will keep you posted if I'm able to find it.

Take care,
Holly

Clara Ann Critchley
She was buried in paupers grave that remained unmarked until we had a stone made and we left it for placement at a site directed by cemetery workers around 1992.
We have searched the area that you mention, the northwest corner, near the stored equipment enclosure.
We''ll go back and look again as it was a small low stone and may be grown over.
Thanks for helping US with the section "O" question.
Martha

I believe, but am not certain, that the section may also extend to the right of that fence as well.

If you'd like to give me the name of your family, I'd be happy to try to find it and take some photos the next time I visit.
Thanks for your message. Do you have information regarding the sections/burial plot #'s of your relatives? If you do not, you can call the owner's wife at 401-644-6039.

The sections are not marked, however, I do know some of them. I would be happy to look for your relatives if you give me their names and dates and possibly the information regarding their burial plots.

Take care,
Holly

I went to City Hall as well when I was in the area this week, but was unable to get any information. I drove around the cemetery, although I knew the chances were slim that I would find my relative's grave.. I live several hundred miles away, so cannot help with any cemetery work.

I just spoke with the Pawtucket City Clerk's office. They are still waiting to receive the burial plot map from the owners despite the promise it would be handed over in a month's time back in April. I can only hope the owners will follow through with the website although they have been making this promise for several years also.

In April of this year, my mother was able to make contact with the owner's wife. Mrs. Franco told her the plot # and location of a relative's burial in the children's section. However, once we visited the location the area was completely overgrown and there was poison ivy everywhere preventing us from finding it. We contacted Mrs. Franco to let her know that we found the area, but the dense growth made it impossible to find the marker. She assured us that her husband, Joe Franco, would be at the cemetery the very following week and would clear the area for us. Here we are in September and the section has not even been touched.

A few months ago there was a letter writing campaign to the mayor regarding the condition of the cemetery, the issues dealing with the owners (disconnected phone #'s, etc), and the desire to assist in a cleanup. I did receive a letter from the mayor in response. He addressed many of the issues which were brought up in the letters.

My mother and I would be more than happy to be involved in an organized clean up. Doug Hadden, the mayor's spokesman, has said that he is willing to act as a middle man between volunteers and the owners. A previous attempt by a very vocal activist was met with resistance and his subsequent ban from the cemetery by the owners.

Is there anybody out there who would be interested in participating in a volunteer cleanup? Historical cemetery regulations state that brush cutting is allowed October 15- January 15.

There are quite a few responses here. Why not try to organized a clean-up group for the cemetery? The weather is at this time of year is perfect. I realize that it would be a large undertaking ( no pun intended), but sometimes you, the people need to make things happen.

I remember visiting my grandfather's grave a few times when I was you. I went looking for it this past year. It took me a while to find it because it wasn't were I remembered it or I should say as I remembered where it was.

Has anyone looked here for info? http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=42...
757 interments are listed. Maybe you could contact the person who added this information to findagrave.

There are a lot of choices for a cemetery, but assuming your person was french canadian and catholic, you could call Notre Dame Cemetery in Pawtucket 401-725-1333. If he's not there, you might want to wait for the death certificate.

If that doesn't give his burial place, you can contact the providence public library for an obit lookup. Since you have the date of death, they will look in the Providence Journal for you and send you a copy for a fee.

You can also call the Pawtucket Library to see if they do look ups in the Pawtucket Times. Contact info on this page
http://www.pawtucketlibrary.org/genealogyresources.htm

Lisa

You don't need to be a relative. You must be looking at the state Vital Records department. You can get this from the state archives. They have Deaths: 1853-1953

Fill out this form and send it by email to the address below.

They will mail the cert. with a bill. Last time I ordered it was 15 cents for a copy of the ledger page, and $2.00 for a certified copy. You can ask for one or both.

If you are in RI or near, you can go to the archives in person. Check also the American French Gen. Society. I think they have these films as well.

Lisa

VITAL RECORDS ORDER FORM Type of Record: _____ Birth _____ Marriage _____
Death (Select only one)

_____ photocopy (.15/pg.) _______ certified copy ($2.00)

Name of Individual Sought:

First:__________________ Middle: ______________ Last:_______________
Date of Birth/Marriage/Death: _______________________________________
Place of event: _____________________________________________________
Parents' Names: _________________________________________________
Spouse: ________________________________________________________
Your Name: ___________________________
Address: ______________________________ _____________________________

Kenneth S.
If you look up how to obtain vital records for birth, death, marriage, etc.... it says on there that you have to either be the person named, immediate family, etc, or have a court order! Maybe the ones I am trying to obtain are not "old" enough? They are all birth and death certs from before 1950...
Is anyone else having this issue as well, or am I possibly doing the wrong thing??

I have 5 family members buried there, including great-grand parents. I can remember going to the cemetery plots many, many years ago and can swear that they were buried just inside the gate to the left on a small hill. If my memory is correct, it either doesn't exist anymore or the headstones aren't there. It really bothers me that I can't find them. If it's just that the headstones got knocked over, I'd gladly pay to have them re-set if I had to (within reason of course). Since it's a private cemetery, it's probably the only one in Pawtucket. There are way too many unkept private cemeteries. The city should take it over, especially since it abuts Oak Grove.

Unfortunately, there have been many, many problems regarding Walnut Hill Cemetery for years. My family has also experienced our family's burial section (located in the rear) being neglected for a very long time, headstones knocked over, junk strewn around, broken glass, poison ivy creeping in, etc. Also, we have another family member buried there in another section and, despite knowing the location, we cannot find it now due to lots of brush overgrowth. This is troubling because we are very familiar with the layout and visit quite often.

In the couple months, the owner of the cemetery has been the focus of some media attention for a number of reasons. Without getting into too much detail on here, one of the main issues is that he has been making inappropriate changes to the cemetery without permission. He is also not providing a map of the burial sites which has been requested.

About 15 years ago, my mother met with the present owner's wife (at the time they took it over) to locate family burials. At that time, she had a site map and was able to point out burial locations. As far as we know, the owner is the only one in possession of the burial site map.

The cemetery is privately owned, however, there has been a push for the city of Pawtucket to take action because it is a historical cemetery, but that has been met with resistance. It might be due to only a few complaints from one select group. There is a need for people from the community, relatives of those buried there, and anyone who cares about this situation to voice their concern. I'd be happy to give you further information. If we don't act on this, there is a chance that we may never get to see the plot map.

I'd be happy to hear your thoughts on this.
I am looking to find where the records are kept for Walnut Hill Cemetery in Pawtucket, RI. Some of my ancestors are buried there, however, the cemetery is not well kept and I have been there several times and still cannot locate their headstones. I am attempting to visit the gravesites.

Larkin Ground - Westerly, RI

After striking out nationwide searching for my Larkin relatives, I found a small passage in a book that stated that there were some Larkins buried on what was the Larkin farm and currently owned by the Dixons, north of the railroads and west of Dorrillville (sp?)

I think these may be uninscribed graves, but thought I'd see if anyone had been out that way.

Thanks

Hi Barb,
My cousin finally found Bridget and John. He had to do a lot of walking because the people who work at the cemetery were not very friendly or helpful. Good luck on your search also.
