Also, there is Evergreen Cemetery, south of Pen Argyl, St. Elizabeth's Cemetery, east of Pen Argyl, and there may be a few others. Wind Gap, Northampton County, PA, might be another town to check.

Catholic Cemeteries In/Near Aliquippa - Beaver County, PA

I'm looking for information on Catholic cemeteries in Aliquippa, PA. One of my ancestors died in Woodlawn, PA, now Aliquippa, in 1913. We have the undertaker and monument records, but they are incomplete, and the place of interment is not noted. The family was Polish and Catholic, so I'm assuming they would have used a Catholic cemetery. Anyone have any info on which cemeteries would have been open at that time? I've searched findagrave.com to no avail. Thanks in advance!

I was wondering if there is anyone who lives near that cemetery who can take a picture of his headstone for me. I have tried contacting the cemetery caretaker regarding info, but she said all the records were turned over to the library for preservation. I contacted the library and they told me they didn't have the time to do a search for me. I would love to get a picture of his tombstone and/or any other related info (obit) that you can find.

Hi, there. I am actively tracing my Solensky roots and am responding to your post. Just joined Ancestry last week.

I grew up in northeastern PA, in Dunmore to be exact. I now live in Olney, MD (a suburb halfway between Washington DC and Baltimore MD).

I think the man you speak of might be my great grandfather Solensky's brother. In fact, I am almost sure it is!

My grandmother was Mary Solensky Durkin, and her parents were Mari/Mary/Maria Cvinar Solensky and Jan/John Solensky. I know that my Great Grandfather came to America with his brother: This is exciting! I think we have a connection here! He and his brother traveled to America together, then Great Grandpa came back to Stropkov, Czechoslavakia (as I am told, by family members, it was called at the time) briefly then went back to America permanently. His wife, my Great Grandmother Solensky, waited until he was settled in Throop, PA, before she left for America with my grandmother, Mary Solensky Durkin (their oldest living child; an older daughter Anna was born about 1905 and died about 1906). That was 1912. My grandmother was 5. They came over on the Hamburg. They settled in Throop and went on to have 11 more children! My grandmother as I said is the oldest. My grandmother eventually married Lawrence Durkin and they settled in Dunmore. They had 3 children, the middle of which was my mother Dorothy Durkin Kelly.

I am Kathleen Kelly Halverson, and it's nice to meet you.

I am SO INTRIGUED as to why Joseph changed his name and severed all ties with our family! This is the first I've heard of this. Please tell me more! And I can tell you more of what I know, too. One story involves a sister of my grandmother, Pauline Solensky, who I can't seem to find much about. I know that she was committed to an insane asylum and lived out the rest of her days there, with our family not contacting her but once (one time she broke her hip and the home had to have my grandmother sign consent to operate). Pauline is my latest obsession in terms of finding out information. Mainly b/c I'm so sad for her and for the way she was treated by our family (but probably for reasons that made sense at the time but wouldn't be considered humane or logical by today's standards). Schizophrenia diagnosis has been thrown around but I'm not so sure...I wonder if she had been written off with a too-quick diagnosis when in fact she was not mentally ill at all. but who knows. she remains my mystery, one that I intend to get to the bottom of.

I have tons of old photos and memorabilia from the Solenskys from the 1920s/30s/40s (tons from the 40s). Working on scanning it all. It's a little overwhelming, but I'm taking it bit by bit and just trying to preserve everything digitally.

I'll dig out a photo of my great grandfather John Solensky. I know I have some. Don't think I have scanned any yet, though. So, another message is in order. Offline, you can contact me at khalverson@asha.org or kathleen.halverson@gmail.com. The first is by far the preferred email address. It's work but that's OK. I'm on it every day (and too much!!!!).

Take care, and I sure do hope that we have a valid connection here!!!!! Not many people in my family care about this stuff, but it absolutely fascinates me, and I just can't get enough.

Kathleen

I forgot to add: The Solenskys are buried mostly in Cathedral Cemetery in Scranton. If you know Scranton, you take Greenridge Street all the way, all the way down until you come to the old middle school at the "T" in the road. You go L on Main Avenue and keep going. It branches in a Y---stay R. Go under highway underpass and up a steep hill. Turn R (sorry, don't know the street name).

Some of our family members also may be buried in Throop Cemetery (not sure if that's the name...it might be Holy Family or something like that)...as you are leaving Dunmore and pass Penn State Worthington campus on L, go a little further down the hill and it's on the R side. You can see it from the main road.

Area is very safe, the cemetery is located on a main st that is always busy. There are 4 Crowthers buried there that I am aware of. I live 2 blocks from the cemetery. Send your email and I'll send you copies of the map.

My Great Great Grandparents, who died in 1942 and 1963 are both buried in Saltsburg Cemetery. Now I looked up this cemetery on findagrave, and I found the Old Saltsburg Cemetery. Almost all the burials were in the 1800's and from the pictures is in horrible shape, I'm very doubtful they are buried there. Is there another cemetery in Saltsburg called or known as Saltsburg Cemetery? I can't find anything online.

Martin Witmer is such a common name around here that I certainly can imagine your difficulty. The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society has a wealth of information and is quite the must see for ancestry seekers. In fact, they are having a Lancaster Family History Conference May 9-11 right up the road from their location in Lancaster. Good luck with your search.

I'm sorry I haven't gotten back to you...in the Shock's cemetery are seven different last names and their various spellings, including Musser, Mosser, Schock, Strickler, Gesch, Grove, Smith. The reason I'm interested in that particular cemetery is because my gfather (who married a Clinger) said his acestors are there and I've been trying to get the connection. My Gfather's name is Cleon Grove and his wife's name is Mary Clinger (her father is George who I simply cannot locate who his parents were.)

Good luck in your search. I realized after I posted my query that I had the wrong graveyard. I had found a possible Witmer relative in a record from the Gerberich collection, and got the wrong graveyard. The one I actually wanted was the Landisville Mennonite cemetary. I'm having a lot of trouble finding the right Martin F Wimer, who was my great-great-grandfather.

A lot is photos I have taken and the rest is from Leverington's book of burials which is on ancestry. The burials which are on find a grave is still about 3000 burials short of being completed.I read years ago that the person who runs the cemetery lives in Bethlehem.
FindAGrave contains the following note:

"Numerous cemeteries were relocation during the construction of Kinzua Dam and Allegheny Reservoir in the early 1960s by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pittsburgh District.
Remains in Kinzua Cemetery, which contained approximately 1,336 graves, and Morrison Run Cemetery, which contained approximately 62 graves (another record said 89), were relocated to Willow Dale Cemetery in Bradford, Pennsylvania.
