A few years ago I saw a posting about a "Hulse" cemitary on Long Island that was in danger of being washed away by the sea. The Post was a few years old then. I am wondering if Sandy wiped it out? Their was a picture of a tree and the comment that the roots of the tree was all that kept it from washing away. I would like any information about this cemetery that anyone has. Thanks

Lisa,
Don't know if you are still providing information on NY cemetaries but here goes. My maternal grandparents had a child by the name of Helen. She was born in 1917. We think July based on the 1920 census. Surname was listed as Kuta (Kuba). It was really Kubiak. Parents' names were Louis and Rose. We thought she died at the age of 4 before her sisters Sophie and Alice were born. Though case someone found a death record for Helen Kubiak age 4 on 11/25/1921 in Manhattan. (Certificate # 26885). Since you indicate that no burils were allowed below a certain steet (and they lived on 6th st., what cemetaries might have been used. We are trying to locate where she may be buried. They were Polish and Catholic. Any clues would be helpful. Thanks, Sandy

Call to restore Lawrence Cemetery in Nassau County

Hoping the Five Towns past isn’t forgotten
by ELYSE, Elfis4everATaol_com

http://www.liherald.com/fivetowns/fivetowns/stories/Hoping-t...

In 2000, the Herald helped me begin an amazing grass roots project called the Lawrence Cemetery Restoration Project for the Lawrence Methodist Church Cementery by covering the stories as the project developed. The Project went strong for about four years.

With five generations of my family buried there and with the help of some amazing memories, LCRP banded together by way of coffee house meetings, letter writing, searching through phone books, publishing articles and sending out newsletters to anyone that might possibly care to help in some way. In doing so, we raised an amazing amount of money. We had donations from all over the country and volunteers came throughout the community to help restore the cemetery grounds by raising stones and repairing the cemetery’s gates and fences. We also all became friends. It was a feel good project that to this day gives me a great sense of pride.

Without any help from the Village of Lawrence, Lawrence Cemetery Restoration Project , Nassau County, or local police, LCRP managed to clean up and renovate the forgotten, vandalized & littered resting place of the founders of the Five Towns. We even convinced the Long Island Rail Road to clear their side of the cemetery and install a new fence. Despite the clean up, the new gate and renovations that were completed inside of two years, we still could not keep the cemetery from further trespassing and vandalism.

Now, 10 years later, most of our founding members have passed away. Many of which were in their 90s. Amazing people like Rose Marie (Zila) Craft, Virginia (Hummel) Hicks, and Evelyn (Wood) Hanlon are no longer with us to lead the charge or exchange stories of a by-gone era. Others like Jane Andrews, sister of the late Curtis Andrews, who was a driving force for the project, has since moved away from the house she grew up in, in Hewlett.

While I am glad our members were able to see the cemetery repaired then, the church and its yards continue to fall to the wear and tear of time, neglect and community apathy. The present owners have no means to maintain, never mind improve the property. My family (Craft) came to this area in 1683 and worked along side people with names like Lawrence, Mott and Abrams. It saddens me and my former member’s memories when I still get emails and phone calls from people looking for their ancestors and answers. These families that built up the Five Towns are looking for answers on how the property and church can be just left to fade away and be forgotten.

Names like Sprague, Pettit, Wood, Abrams, Frost, Andrews, Hummel, Coles, Hicks, Hewlett and so many other historical families who called this area home and built this area so that it could become the thriving community that it is today. The faces, names and faiths may have changed, but I hope the sacred ground of the Lawrence Cemetery and the Five Towns founders that rest there eternally, will never be forgotten.

I was able to find my GGGGrandfathers family which our family never knew who or what happened to them.
Edward and Bridget Wales are buried in St Mary Catholic Cemetary in Arcade, NY. While finally a family search was neat and we found two of his siblings: Edward & his wife, James and his wife (plus other members) we have not been able to locate Hugh Wales Born 1840. And we are stumped, is there a military cemetary possibly? He was on Census rolls until 1860 but nothing after 1870 could he have died in Civil War? Or are there other cemetaries he was burie din?

Hi Betty, I know it's a long time since your post of 2008, but as soon as I read it, I knew which cemetery you were writing about: It's Calvary (started in 1851). It's along MEEKER Avenue. The area around Meeker is the original, or "Old Calvary" as it is known. Calvary has a couple of other sections nearby, further into the borough of Queens, which are also large.

(just happen to know since I have family there!)

There is no mention of this cemetery in the book. The book mostly focuses on New York City cemeteries. You should try looking to resources in the county or towns where you are searching; such as an historical society or local library. Sometimes research can be performed for very little cost. I would think you'd want to find the missing family member's death certificate which they may be able to help you with.
Good luck,
Lisa

Center Moriches NY. In back of the new church is a graveyard that goes back to the 1600's. I went to school there and was able to read the stones way back. Now I dont know. However, the church has kept the graveyard. They dols some of the property and moved the monuments to a smaller area inside the graveyard.
Its on Montauk Highway. Across from the Library. Go to the back parking lot and look near the garage on the east side.

Hi Peter,
I haven't forgotten you! Just been very busy. When I mapquest 421 E. 16th, where he lived in 1888; it comes up in Brooklyn. There doesn't seem to be and E. 14th St. in Brooklyn though, which is where he lived in 1885; however there are both E. 16th & E. 14th in Manhattan; so I am still going with the belief that he lived in Manhattan. The problem with that is that after abt. 1850 or so, burials were prohibited below 86th St. in Manhattan; and we know he was at least alive until 1888; so he is probably not buried in Manhattan. He could be buried in Brooklyn. Green-Wood Cem in Brooklyn has an online burial inquiry and although about 12 Dempsters are buried there; no Jackson. Here's a link to their site:
http://www.green-wood.com/

He could be in either Cemetery of the Evergreens or Cypress Hills Cem in Brooklyn. You could try writing or calling either of these:
Cemetery of the Evergreens
1629 Bushwick Avenue
Brooklyn, NY 11207-1849
718-455-5300

Cypress Hills Cemetery
833 Jamaica Avenue
Brooklyn, NY 11208-1593
718-277-2900

These are both non-sectarian. Would he have been Catholic?

I wish I could ask you for help in N. Ireland?!?! The only Irish line that I know of which I need to try to trace is of my 4X gr grandfather John Pierce; who I only know was born abt. 1744 in Ireland; somehow ended up in Biddeford, ME USA in time to serve in the Revolutionary War; married there in 1781 and removed to Limerick, Maine. I have no idea what county he came from and asking anyone to look for John Pierce would be like looking for a needle in a haystack!

Lisa

Hi,

I'm posting this announcement with the intent to form a family cemetery association for the Beismer/Vandemark cemetery in Debruce, NY. There are 3 families buried in that cemetery: Beismer and variant spellings, Vandemark and variant spellings, and Hogancamp. The cemetery has been abandoned for many years and local burials are being made there. Members of those families have expressed interest in the past to preserve the cemetery as a family cemetery. There is a process to go through, not very complicated, but I need more family members to step forward to participate. If you are related and have any interest, please contact me. If you know anyone who is related please pass the information on to them.

Thank you.

Peter,
Geez, I forgot to grab my book on the cemeteries. I am not where my book is! I know that after a certain date in the mid 1800's burials were no longer allowed in Manhattan below a certain street but I can't remember what number the street was. Since your Jackson Dempster apparently died in the late 1800's; he is probably not buried in Manhattan. He may be buried in Brooklyn.

I think you could try the larger cemeteries by trial and error...but if you can give me a few days I'll try to remember to grab the book and I can list some of the ones which seem like places he might have been buried. The book is nice because it tells you yrs. of operation so you can rule out certain ones right off. Plus it has exact contact info and whether they prefer requests by mail or phone, etc.

At the moment the book is packed up in a box (renovations happening at my house).

Lisa

Hi there Peter,

Are you aware that the Workhouse/Blackwell's Island was a prison? Jackson Dempster is listed as a prisoner there in 1880.

However I do find him in the City Directories for NY, starting in 1872 and up to 1888 at various addresses. Which tells me he either didn't spend long in prison or he actually worked there and is erroneously enumerated as a prisoner???

Here are Directory listings, found on Footnote.com:
1872- 220 First Av.; baker
1873- h[ouse] r[ear] 435 E 12th, baker
1875- h. 263 E 10th, baker
1877- Not listed
1878- h. r. 506 E 14th, baker
1880- h. r. 506 E 14th, baker
1885- h. r. 506 E 14th, baker
1888- h. 421 E 16th, baker

These addresses are indeed in Manhattan. No sign of Nancy anywhere. There was a Nancy Dempster in Elgin, Kane Co., Illinois, a 30 yr. old married housewife, residing in an insane asylum, bplace: Ireland. It seems unlikely that this is his Nancy.

I don't see anything for Jackson after 1888. I don't know if this is any help. I don't really have any information on burials in NY. I do have a book about cemeteries in NY but not listings of actual burials. There are so many possibilities where Jackson might be buried, my only suggestion would be to write to the big ones and hope to find them.

Best of luck.
Lisa

Are you sure you were on I 278, and not 678? 678 seems to go throug Queens and I note Mt. Hebron Cemetery which looks enormous...
278 looks like it runs from the Bronx south down through Brooklyn; and over through Staten Island and into New Jersey. 278 seems to take you between Calvary and New Calvary Cemeteries and further south by Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn. Where were you heading at the time you saw the cemeteries? That might clear it up.

Lisa

There are a few large cemeteries along 278. In Queens, 278 runs right between Calvary and New Calvary cemeteries. Do you think that could be them? I don't have my book with me but I can get back to you in a couple of days.
Lisa

Hi Liza ... On a trip Easter Weekend to NYC, flying by on the tour bus I, and many others, were in awe at the size of 2 cemeteries off the I278 (near a cross street I noted of Meecher). Two absolutely hugh cemeteries which seemed to go on forever. What could you tell me about their history, size, first burial, etc.
With my thanks.
Betty (near Peterborough, Ontario, Canada)
I am not sure I have any suggestions really, beyond what I gave you. For such an uncommon name, it is pretty awful to search for. It has obviously been mangled in the transcriptions. The only thing I have found that I know for sure is them is in 1910 Manhattan Census. I think I see their sons in Brooklyn in 1930...atleast the name was spelled right. Anyhow, in 1910 Johanna is listed as Jennie.

I checked Footnote.com hoping to find a petition for naturalization...but came up empty. That would be the goldmine record. I have one in Pennsylvania for a John J. Smutnik from Austria in 1897. I've got one in PA for Andro Novotni, witnessed by Emil P. Smutnik in 1928. Also, in PA, one for a Charles Kremnez, witnessed by Joseph Smutnik in 1903. Another one again for John J. Smutnik in 1903; one for Peter Duricek in 1903, witnessed by John J.; John Sadecky witnessed by John J. in 1903; Albert Lubitsky in 1905, witnessed by Josef Smutnik; George Chladek in 1903, witnessed by Joseph Smutnik; Charles Wisnovsky in 1903, witnessed by Joseph. Unfortunately, I am not getting anything biographical on John J. to indicate whether he could be related to Paul. These were all in PA.

Of interest, is an FBI investigation record that comes up on a Joseph Smutnik, interviewed by Agent Pannell at Akron, OH in 1919; an alleged Bolshevist, whatever that means. It looks like they let him walk for lack of evidence. He was a suspected member of Union of Russian Workers. In the interview he said he was born in Russian Poland. Nothing else biographical, except that he was not married. Interesting anyhow.

There is a Petition for Naturalization in the NY index 1917-1950 for an Ernest Smertnik; a Josephine Smertnik in 1930 Brooklyn, and a Mary Smrtnik in 1930 Brooklyn.

I honestly don't know what else to tell you. I really had no obvious luck searching Passenger Lists either.

Well, I hope I have been of some help. Good luck.
Lisa

Hi Lisa,
Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. You are correct. I am looking for info on my Great Grandfather Paul Smutnick as well as his mother and father. The only documented info I have on Paul Smutnick is his death certificate; he died 5 Dec 1913 in Willington, Ct. There is no mention of him at the Town hall. The only info at St Edward's cemetery is his and his wife's name, Johanna Pavelka, and where they are interred. Paul (b, 13 Jan 1847) and Johanna (b. Sep 1868 d. 9 Oct 1922) are both listed being born in Austria.Paul's name is spelled incorrectly as Somutrick and Smutrick. I appreciate any further information or hints on which direction to go from here. I will call Blasius and Son on monday.

David Smutnick

I assume you are looking for whom Paul purchased those coffins? I did find Nicholas Blasius, Sr.'s obit in the NY Times. He died 28 Sep 1933; what is interesting is that his burial was being handled by his own "Nicholas Blasius Funeral Chapel" at 710 Knickbocker Ave., Brooklyn. His 4 sons were also undertakers.
Here is what I believe is a current listing:
Alexander Blasius & Son 207 Avenue A, NY, NY (212) 228-7110

One of the sons listed was Alexander...I'm sure it's not him but maybe his son? Probably the same family. I wonder if you contact them, if they would still have records back that far? You never know!

Likewise, George Peth's obit appeared in NY Times 11 Mar 1931; it only says he was an undertaker in Brooklyn for more than 40 yrs. He died at his home at 85-77 Eighty Seventh Ave., Woodhaven; in his 65th year.

I am not finding a current listing that matches Peth.
Are you looking for more info on Paul Smutnick? What more do you know abt. him?

Lisa

Howdy, This is a great web site to find obscured Cemeteries as well as other landmarks. Take a little practice to use. I found all references to the "Stafford" Family and found a little known Stafford Cemetery in Chenango County near Oxford, New York.
Google "GNIS" and look for the "Query Form For The United States And Its Territories"

Start with "feature class" pull down and select "cemetery" and pull down "State". Wait for the "County" pull down to auto fill and all Cemeteries that ever was documented in previous editions of USGS Topographical maps are listed. Cross referenced this to Google Earth and you could experience a virtual fly over from you location to your destination. You may have to note the closest cross streets for those rural locations. With Google Earth you would quickly find up to date landmarks to help you navigate.

This is the URL Address to Copy and Paste.
http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=115:1:1078720039...

Enjoy

H Trump

I found a Jewish cemetery in Newburgh (Orange County)...approximate coordinates are 41.494895 Latitude and -74.040228 Longitude. It's off of Temple Avenue and Ellis Avenue and near Crystal Lake. It is very far off the road and is surrounded by a fence that looks like it was put up in recent years. The fence is broken and there are beer bottles and garbage strewn all over. Some of the stones are knocked over and very weather worn and everything is overgrown. From what my sister tells me, it was a hangout for teenagers in the 80s, and it looks like it still is today. It's such a shame. Some graves are from the 1800s while others are from within the last 20 or 30 years. I wish I knew who it belonged to and why they aren't taking care of it!

There are a lot of cemeteries in Orange County New York. I am trying to start a cemetery preservation group to take care of these cemeteries but I am not sure on how to do so. If you have any advice please let me know.

Cemetery Restoration

I am not sure where you live, but some states have laws and available funds to do this. Otherwise try the American Legion, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and possibly a Quaker Church group. I have tried for many years and earnestly for the past 5 years to get a small cemetery recognized and restored. The mayor of Goshen, NY promised over two years ago that this is a "priority" of his. I no longer live there so I am reluctant to hound him.

There is an old abandoned Quaker Cemetery which is in desperate need of cleaning up. It is a horrid mess. There are revolutionary war soldiers buried there and also prominent settlers of this area. No one seems to wish to get this cemetery cleaned up and respectful. What does one do? I am just one person and trying to get something done . Any help, any suggestions? thanks.....

There is a little known Authoritive Online resource. Try Googling the Keyword "GNIS" Click on "US and Territories" pull down "State" and the Counties field will automatically list Counties for that State. Then set Feature Class as "Cemetery" and Click "Send Query
This is the most Complete record of Landmarks that I know. Because of it's nature, It lists little known cemteries without the benefit of an Office or Phone number.
It also give you a Map name to order for.
Without this resource, I could not locate a "Stafford Cemetery" in Chenango County

H Trump

Tombstone Restoration

I am currently in the process of saving and restoring a previously "lost cemetery" on Shepard road in the town of Wethersfield Springs, Wyoming County, about a mile outside of the hamlet of Hermitage. It took me 2 years of driving up and down this road to find it as it was so badly overgrown. The brush has been cleared, and turned into mulch and now I need some advice.
Is there a way to restore a sandstone (I think that's what it is) tombstone. It's the stone that comes apart in big flakes. There are several on this site and could be put back together as most of the pieces are still there. I just need some advice on what is the best and proper way to do this.
Thanks for any opinions and advice,

The name of that cemetery is Pearl Creek Cemetery. It is indeed a lovely cemetery. If you go towards the rear (from the road) of the cemetery there are a few burials that are quite recent.
Sorry I cannot hep you with any information on the gravesite.
