Please see the message to Cohoes residents past & present.
Back in Sept.last year, the input from this board helped much in getting the Diocese to finally begin to take interest in the cemetery that virtually does not exist but does! This cemetery belongs to St. Bernard's and was active from approx. 1850-1950. It was bad enough to always claim "No Records" and not attempt to even try to locate information to possibly rebuild a list, but they have yet to even give this place a sign or list it with the State, as a closed cemetery! To make matters worse, records that I have requested from Cohoes will only now say that death was in Cohoes, yet when I recieve the State copies, the same records have shown, place of burial as "Calvary" in Cohoes. Most people when asked will only know of Calvary in Glenmont but the one in Cohoes may have sometimes been reffered to as "St.Bernard's cemetery". Please help us to try and compile names and dates of those you may know who may be buried here. We know that there were many families and hopefully the more we reach, the stronger voice we will have to finally see Calvary acknowledged.

Finally I have met concerned people. My great grandmother (Catherine Ryan Cannon) is buried in Calvary Cemetery.

I was there in the 1980's and was surprised that the cemetery was abandoned .

I will be going back this week.

I have my grandfather's original birth record from St. Bernard's 4-4-1900 (Michael Cannon)

his mother died in 1906

I read the ancestry.com messages on all your concerns.

I didn't know if my great grandmother was moved to St. Agnes. I looked in the 1980's and didn't see her.

My grandfather (as a child) had a sibling who died in Cohoes. When his father returned after making the funeral arragements, another child was dead !

Hi James,

When you go back there, you might check the fence at the back of the cemetery. There's a big hole in it--at least there was a few weeks ago when I drove through Cohoes and stopped in at Calvary. The neighborhood kids are likely still riding their dirtbikes through that hole in the fence, as they were when I stopped there a number of years ago. It's used as a party spot, from what I can tell.

You know, if I knew where in the cemetery my ggg grandfather Joseph Casey was buried, I might consider putting some kind of marker there for him. Now that I think of it, it's not a half-bad idea, even though I don't have a clue where he is in the cemetery.

Anyone else interested in putting together a campaign to list at the site on some kind of permanent marker the names of the people we know are buried there?

Thanks for the information Sue. I will be visiting the cemetery within the next few days. That would be a great idea to get a plaque or sign and list the names of people burried there and later others could add to it.
It's sad to know people let the cemetery go, and not take care of it.

I believe the records are held by the Diocesan Cemeteries office @ St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.

They're the devil when it comes to releasing info.

Hi Kathleen,

When you say records at the Diocese Cemeteries office, what does that mean exactly? Do they have a list of who's buried at Calvary and where? Or could they just confirm the names of people who are buried there? Meaning, I know my ggg grandfather is buried there (though not where in the cemetery he is), but I don't know whether his wife is, so could the Diocese Cemetery office tell me whether she is buried there AND where in the cemetery they both are?
Thanks.

Sue,
I don't think anyone is still buried there, though I could be wrong. I believe they have whatever is left of the records. I don't know if they have a map to show where someone was buried.

I believe hundreds of people are burried in Calvary Cemetery. Most before 1930. I was there in the 1980's and the librarian said some people had been moved to St. Agne's Cemetery but most grave sites stayed where they were. I was there at Calvary Cemetery in Cohoes last week. 3 large Grave Stones are visible from Bridge St. (1) Rev. John Talbot Smith died Sept. 24, 1923, 6 Ft High grave stove 30 feet from road (2) Michael English died Oct 25, 1883 age 34 wife Margret, children Maggie, Agnes, Francis,Michael, 6 ft high gravestone 60 feet from road (3) The 3rd grave stone is about 25 feet high. It is about 300 feet into the cemetery and sits on a high hill. The Rev. James Keveny who apparently was a priest at St. Bernard's Church is burried there with his parents Martin & Margaret Keveny and about 4 other relatives. Rev. James Keneny died March 16, 1880, Mary Keveny died March 19, 1875 and at least 3 others. I believe these stones were larger and left alone. All the other grave stones seemed to be toppled over and lay between 1 ft and 2 ft below the surface. My intuition tells me many grave stones have been knocked from there foundation and are grown over by grass. such as a few listed: John McEnerney 1828 - 1913, his wife Margaret 1836-1894 their children John, James, Joseph, Elizabeth, Gertrude, George, Francis and another 1838 John Culen(?) 1910, his wife Mary Blake1845-1897 their children Mary 1866-1867, John, 1867-1868, William 1868 -1873 Edward 1869.
My great grandmother is buried somewhere in Calvary Cemetery-Catherine Ryan Cannon 1906, her sister Ellen Ryan Kilfoyle1925, and her brother in law William Kilfoyle 1924. That's over 30 people and there are hundreds more. I found a settling for a stone with no stone, and a border for a family plot that the motor bikes uncovered with there riding trails. Someone suggested all the people who have family burried there should get a list together and put up some type of sign or plaque. I tried to visit St. Bernard's church as that is where many of my ancesters attended, but no one was at the rectory when I went.

Just thought I'd mention, I spoke to a woman at the St. Agnes/Menands diocesean cemeteries office the other day, following your reference to her, Kathy. She said that she believes that there are in fact people still buried at Calvary Cemetery. And, she was not able to find record of my ancestor as having been moved out of Calvary into any of the seven or so cemeteries that her office manages. That doesn't mean he wasn't moved, but she doesn't have evidence of it.
