He is the son of Daniel T. and Phebe Ann White. He died in 1873 at 19 years. He is buried in the Hurdtown Cemetary but his headstone is broken off and the broken half behind the top half. If someone knows what is written on the headstone I'd appreciate receiving a translation. John was a volunteer in the New Jersey Union infantry and I am anxious to know his cause of death...perhaps the result of wound received during the Civil war. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks Jeannette ONeill

Her tombstone is located in the Hurdtown Cemetary in Hurdtown, Morris County, NJ. I cannot read the inscription but her birthdate is indicated as 1806. This is incorrect. Citing a family Bible kept by the family Mary Lesby was born on 17 Mar. 1864 and died on 17 Aug. 1863. I am endeavoring through the Find a Grave website to have the headstone read and sent to me, along with a photo of the headstone. I will post it for those interested as soon as I receive it.

The cemetery sustained a tremendous amount of damage from Irene and Superstorm Sandy, especially the Bay area. In addition many stones were already in terrible shape. Best to check with the office to see if stone survived before you go there. Also, please remember this is not a safe area.

Susie - I was able to find one more article about the cemetery. It's from May 16 1904 and includes a photo. I was amazed to see monuments; from the other article I was expecting a few dilapidated headstones.

The Jersey Journal on genealogybank is only available up to 1922. The last mention of the church is Dec 1922 - a Christmas pageant. I haven't found any mention of what happened to the graves.

I also saw a blurb on another website that claims the Mt Carmel Baptist Church took over the church site on Ocean and Linden in 1969.

There are some early 1900 google books that mention the Linden ME Church in reports from the Newark Conference of the Methodist Church but no mention of the cemetery that I could see.

You might want to contact the NJ Room at the Jersey City Public Library to see if they have anything that can help. And consider posting a query in the Hudson County NJ forum - someone monitoring it may have more info for you.

I'd love to hear what eventually happened to those graves if you ever find out.

Happy Hunting,
Robin

Robin, Thank you so much for the terrific article and map. This was extremely helpful in that I hadn't realized that the Chuch had been moved from a former location to its location on the corner of Linden & Ocean. My great grandmother lived close by and was very active in that church. Because of that, I was always puzzled as to why she was buried at the New York Bay Cememtery in Jersey City (in 1925) and not at the Church's cemetery. This article from 1903 explains a lot. Thanks, too, for the map. I was able to look at the area indicated on the old map with satellite photography and the imprint of the lot is clearly there but sadly it's now a parking lot. Should you happen to come across any other articles on what happened to the remains of those interred there, I'd be most grateful as I'm still looking for her parents' gravesites and thought them to be there. (FYI, Regarding a grand uncle, in one article that I have it says that "he was buried behind Bamber Hall" and that's exactly the name of the old church building shown in pink on the old map.) I can't thank you enough for your help. Best wishes, Susie

Need help please finding out what happened to this cemetery. The M.E. Church was built in 1888 and later became the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church which also seems to no longer exist at that locaton. I have an excerpt from an old article that mentions that the burial ground was founded in 1845 and contains about 250 graves. I also have another old article dated from 1898 that Louis McIntyre was buried there in the family plot. Other family members buried there would have been the Henemiers. The Church is on the corner of Linden and Ocean Avenues, but in looking at satellite photography of that location, it doesn't appear that a cemetery is still there. Any information would be sincerely appreciated.

Berta; Thank you for your response. I also found this Tunis ( Anthony ), however, he is not the one I was looking for. My Tunis Van Gulick was married to Jennie McCabe approx 1906. The last record I could find of him was 1927 listed in the Passaic City Directory as a Police Officer. In 1929 in the Passaic City Directory Jennie(McCabe) Van Gulick is listed as a widow. They had two children, Irena,(F), and Vincent (M). His mother is listed as Mary Van Gulick. They are from Holland and settled in Saddlebrook New Jersey in 1887. Tunis was born 08 Sept 1878.
Thanks Again.
Lewis C.

I only just saw your post...two months late! Oh well, if you find yourself doing this again after the holidays, I would greatly appreciate your help.
I have need of two records: John Joseph Kennelly and his wife Anna Augusta (nee Dolfinger) Kennelly. They lived in West New York, Hudson, New Jersey, were Roman Catholic. John b. DEC 1861, died 2 FEB1929. His obit says he was buried in Madonna Cemetery, Fort Lee
John's wife, Anna Augusta, died 8 years later (? 28 NOV ?) 1937. Family says she was going blind and had a foot/leg amputated so she may have died in hospital. I can't find any death or burial record. I am hoping she was buried with her husband in Madonna Cemetery. If you come across any info regarding the above, please contact me. I would be forever grateful for your assistance whatever the outcome.

My first thought was either Cedar Lawn or Calvary in Paterson or Crest Haven Memorial Park or East Ridgelawn in Clifton.

I checked F.A.G. and there is a:
Tunis "Anthony" Van Gulick buried in Cedar Lawn.
Born: 1875, Netherlands
Death: 1956, Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey

Could this be a son/father/uncle?

Wife is listed as: Grietje "Maggie" Doorn Van Gulick.
Born: Jul. 25, 1879, Melissant, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands
Death: 1955, Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey

There are a few more Van Gulick listed there.

I have a lot of family in that area so I'll see what I can dig up.

Berta

Is it possible that Henry Wendelken is buried with John Wendelken (1855-1932) in Flower Hill? You had a photo request for John posted on FindaGrave.com which I did the last time I was at Flower Hill and John did not have a marker. Perhaps check with the cemetery office to see what plot Henry was in. The one I photographed for John was Block O, Row 7, Grave 33.

Joe

The Hudson County Institution at Snake Hill had a cemetery and Potters Field. The cemetery was paved over to make the NJ Turnpike in the late 70s. This was a great horror and there is a documentary regarding Snake Hill, which you could get on Amazon. The bodies had to be removed and were placed in a large grave, together.....The Jersey Journal had an expose...If you would like me to find out if your family member is inthe mass grave, please let me know the complete name. If you get a chance to look up Snake Hill, which is located in Secaucus (currently a park called "Laurel Hill", you would be amazed. Bridget Revell

Hoboken Cemetery - Condition and Contact Info

Barbara (and anyone else interested),
I've been to Hoboken Cemetery in the last 2 years and can say that while the front half of the cemetery was maintained well enough with grass cut, etc. the back half on the hills above the receiving vaults was a treacherous jungle of plant growth (especially poison ivy) and is populated by gophers and their dangerous holes. I went in May but I'd suggest going maybe in the Fall to early winter when a lot of the underbrush should have died off (provided there is no snow!) Although I felt secure enough in the front portion near the main gates, I never saw another person coming or going and would not venture into the back alone. There did not seem to be anyone at the house at the gates of the cemetery or any groundskeeping staff on site.

As far as records, the cemetery and its records are currently maintained by Epstein Management and you can write, email or call them to check if a person you think is buried there. They were very helpful to me and though they never reply to emails, within a day or two of sending in inquiry, they had mailed me a photocopied plot map with the location of the graves I requested. They did not ask for any money. As long as you don't drive them crazy with tons of lookups they probably wouldn't charge you. Here's the contact info:

Epstein Management Corp.
PO Box 222 / 731 Kenilworth Avenue
Kenilworth, NJ 07033-0222
(201)867-7130
sbemanagement@aol.com

Good luck!
Joe
