Son- James T Brown, Birthplace: Texas, Age: 9yrs, Race: White, Father's Birthplace: Texas, Mother's Birthplace: Arkansas

Her name being given as Ellen in 1910 and 1920 won't have been an error, she may have been known to the family as Ellen rather than Mary or Mary Ellen. My Grandfather was Charles William but he was usually referred to as Bill.

I think seeing Mary Ellen and Jefferson's marriage record would be the next step to finding out Mary Ellen's parent's names, as nearly all their children were born in Texas that is likely to be where they married. I have found a record that is probably theirs-

Groom's Name J.B. Brown, Bride's Name Ellen Griffith, Marriage Date, 20 April 1898, Marriage place, Lamar Co, Texas.

It doesn't give any more information than that online, seeing the actual record or a copy of it will tell you more. You could contact Lamar County Office, they will be able to help more.

I am not American so I am unsure which tribes were in Arkansas in the era that Mary Ellen was born. Her race, and that of her children's is always given on the censuses as white, so that suggests to me that she wasn't registered in a tribe. You could try posting a message to the Arkansas board though-

Here is what I know:
Her maden name is Mary Ellen Griffith,
Her spouse is Jefferson Bolin Brown
Her children are (10 Maggie Brown,
(2) Jessie Brown, she lived in
Ratliff Choctaw Okla.
She was born about 1878, in Arkansas??(not sure)
I know that she also was posted on the census
as Ellen, and I believe this was an error on
someone's part. She was my grandma on my
Grandma Maggie M. Browns side.
Thanks I am trying to locate if she was
Cherokee, or Choctaw indian and if so was she
registered in the tribe? I urgently need this
to register myself and grandkids before they
are stolen from us and adopted out to unknowns.

Hi Mary,

Griffith and Brown are common surnames, there are many Marys with those surnames and birth year in Oklahoma on the censuses. Do you have any more information that could make tracing her easier?

Was Mary Ellen Griffith her maiden name, and Brown her married surname? Also, do you know where she was born? And the names of her husband and children would be a big help too.
