Ramsey County "Poor Farm" cemetery look-ups
I've recently come into possession of a 1998 publication entitled "Ramsey County's Forgotten Cemetery". It's about the Ramsey County "Poor Farm" cemetery that was located on White Bear Ave. in St. Paul, MN. It contains a transcription of all of the people buried in the cemetery from 1893 - 1923. The graves are still there, but all but one remain unmarked.
From the book: "... the people buried here were often poor or indigent. Any person who died or was found dead anywhere in Ramsey County anywhere in Ramsey County whose survivors could not afford to to pay for a private burial would have been interred here, not just residents of the Ramsey County Poor Farm".
A am willing to do look-ups for those who may have relatives buried in this cemetery. Please message me on Ancestry or reply here with pertinent details. Some of the entries are incomplete, many give quite a bit of info, including the cause of death. The baby entries are particularly heartbreaking.

Re: Ramsey County "Poor Farm" cemetery look-ups
Could you look up a James and Margaret McCarthy ? I think they would have a date of 1865 to 1875. Thanks. Mary

Re: Ramsey County "Poor Farm" cemetery look-ups
Hi Mary,
James and Margaret McCarthy do not appear in the book. Their deaths were too early. The Ramsey County cemetery was established in 1894. Prior to that date the burials were contracted with established St. Paul cemeteries, e.g. Calvary and Oakland.
There are 3 McCarthys in the book:
Baby, white, male, age 23 days, died June 27 1901 of gastro enteritis.
Florence, White, Female, Age 60, born Ireland, died Sept. 22 1916 of chronic diffuse nephritis. Single.
Laura, white, female, age 48, born Ireland, died Dec 23 1899 of heart disease. Married, housewife.
Best of luck in finding your McCarthys.

Thanks for that information, it might be a good idea to make sure the Minnesota Historical Society has a copy ofthat--never even hear of that cemetery.

Re: Ramsey County "Poor Farm" cemetery look-ups
Would you please look up "Jonathan Hay" who died January 31, 1899? He might be listed as John Hay, or as "Thomas J. Hayden" which was his Civil War alias. Thanks.

Re: Ramsey County "Poor Farm" cemetery look-ups
Sorry, there is no entry for Jonathan Hay or Thomas Hayden. I checked similar names and also the entries with only a first name, but do not see any likely candidate with that date of death.

Re: Ramsey County "Poor Farm" cemetery look-ups
Will you please look for John Sheehan who died Feb 1912 in your Poor Farm cemetery book. Do you have the address of the cemetery on White Bear Ave ?
Thanks, Rose

Re: Ramsey County "Poor Farm" cemetery look-ups
Hi Rose, Indeed there is listing for that name & year:
Sheehan, John Color: W Age/Sex: 45 y-M b. US. d. 3 Feb 1912, tuberculosis, City & County Hospital. Marital: Single Loc.: B21 L2 G14 Buried: 6 Apr 1912 Book: A #1477
It looks like they held the body for burial for a couple of months, probably waiting for spring thaw.
The book does not give an address for the cemetery. However, the Ramsey Cty Nursing Home is 2000 White Bear Ave and the Ramsey Cty Extension Service is 2020 White Bear Ave. It's just north of the extension service building.
Regards,
Threse
