This is probably a long shot but, I have many family members buried in this cemetery including my grandmother. I live in Oklahoma and have heard the neighborhood is too dangerous to even visit there. I was wondering if anyone has ever transcribed this cemetery, taken photos maybe? Is it still taken care of? I have written to the cemetery but, all I get is the standard "there are too many people buried here for us to look them up." If anyone has any information I would greatly appreciate it.

This is one of the oldest cemeteries in Detroit. I've never been to it but some of them never kept accurate records and won't do look ups for mail inquiries.

I KNOW WHERE MY GRANDPARENTS ARE. I GO THERE ONCE OR TWICE A YEAR. I ALWAYS GO THERE WITH SOME ONE. IT IS ALWAYS THE SAFE THING TO DO. I THINK THIS CEMETERY IS A LITTLE FURTHER THAN MT. OLIVE. FOREST LAWN IS ACROSS THE STREET FROM MT. OLIVE GETHSEMANE IS NEAR CITY AIRPORT. IF I CAN LOOK SOMEONE UP FOR YOU I LET YOU KNOW THEIR NAMES I WILL ASK AT THE OFFICE. MOST OF THE TIME THEY ARE VERY NICE ABOUT HELPING YOU LOCATE FAMILY.

Thank you so much for your offer. I know that I have MANY family members buried there including my grandmother. It is nice to know it is not as bad as some people have told me it is. I hope to get there someday to take pictures for I have grandmother, great grandparents, and gggrandparents there not to mention numerous distant aunts, uncles, and cousins.

YOU ARE WELCOME AS YOU SEE ON MAP QUEST THE CEMETERY IS RIGHT OFF OF GRATIOT TOO. MY DAD WOULD TAKE OUTER DRIVE DOWN TO GRATIOT AND INTO THE CEMETERY. SOME PEOPLE MAY THINK THIS IS WEIRD BUT WE USED TO GO ALL THE TIME AS KIDS WITH OUR PARENTS TO PLANT FLOWERS ON THE GRAVES AND WATER THEM EVERYOTHER WEEK. IT WAS QUITE INTERESTING LOOKING AT ALL THE OLD GRAVES AND THE TOMB STONES THERE. IT WAS A DIFFERENT KIND OF WORLD THEN. IT IS SAD THAT THOSE TIMES ARE GONE.

Well I made it to Gethsemane on 3-25-04 and found the neighborhood pretty run down. Across the street is in ruins with graffiti. The roads in the cemetery have a lot of pot holes filled with muddy water. The office personnel are friendly and helpful as well as the groundsman. My Uncle's and his Mother's headstones had sunken in and were barily visible. The groundman had to get out the very old map of the burial plots and help me to locate the headstones. He offered to dig them out, but I said I would do it. They will give you information over the phone. I have a map of the cemetery as well as pictures I took while I was there. You can use mapquest to do an air search of the cemetery. I haven't done it yet to see how close I can get. While I was digging a plane flew right over my head. That was a little scarey. I know this reply is a long time after the other remarks, but I wanted to add this in case someone is going to this cemetery. I was there last week for the first time in 40 years. The surrounding area is really run down and very rough looking, but the cemetery is still nice. I was looking for my uncle's grave and ask in the office if they could help me. They now charge $5 to look up a grave that has been there more than 6 months. We did find what we were looking for. If you have a grave marked with the flat markers, they seem to sink with time. I noticed some graves where the markers had sunk, the top filled in with grass and dirt, so you wouldn't know there was a grave there except for an indentation in the ground where the marker was. My uncle was buried there in 1967 and his still looked okay. It was starting to sink a little, and a groundskeeper told me it would need a new cement slab under it.

It's a shame that area has gone downhill. My grandparents lived near the cemetery and we lived at Harper and Outer Drive when I was very small. At that time, it was a great area - of course that was 50 years ago!!
