Cook Family Cemetery - Shreveport Caddo Parish

Unmarked burials are at this site per genealogy research conducted that include: 6 children and Jessie Cook Sr, and Minnie Cook Laenger. The last communication with LA DEPT of ARCHAEOLOGY in October 2012 indicated that they were UNSUCCESSFUL in contacting the landowner, Lee A. Jeter, Sr., Executive Director, Fuller Center for Housing NWLA, Building Homes, Building Lives, 318-221-7474.

The LA DEPT of ARCHAEOLOGY is aware of the power pole near the lone headstone on Freewater St. Shreveport, however, the LA DEPT ARCH cemetery documentation does not include a photograph of the electric pole AND the headstone together. See http://flic.kr/p/dKW44B According to JoAnn's research this location is owned by: Lee A. Jeter, Sr., Executive Director, Fuller Center for Housing NWLA, Building Homes, Building Lives, 318-221-7474. As of October 2012 none of the parties interested have been able to contact the landowner to make him aware of this family burial ground including the lone headstone. New home construction is slated to begin January 23, 2013 at this location (per JoAnn Cook Anderson) This photo below is the lone headstone found at Cook Family Cemetery where JoAnn's genealogy research has indicated unmarked burials of 6 children and 2 adults.

I have this information from a Find A Grave:
GPS coordinates N 32 degrees 48'42.0"
W093 degrees 37'45.0" contributor and this:
Caney Creek Cemetery is on private land in Rocky Mount, Bossier Parish, Louisiana, just off Seven Pines Road.
And from a third party that visited there back in the Winter I have this information:
My wife and I found the cemetery only with the help of the Bossier Parish Sheriffs Department. We were visiting the Rocky Mount Cemetery and started talking to the local patrol officers asking about Caney Creek Cemetery and its location. The officer contacted the dispatcher and she gave me directions to the cemetery which is on private property and with no signs on the main road to give directions to it. I will do my best to give you directions to the cemetery which can be tricky to get to. As you come south out of Plain Dealing, turn left onto Highway 160 near Rocky Mount, continue east to Seven Pines Road and turn right. You will go south about two or three miles. Keep looking to the right for a forestry gate that will probably be closed. There are several of these gates along Seven Pines Road but the one you are looking for will be on timberland that was cleared about a year or so ago. You will probably have to park at the gate and walk a mile or so into the field. The dirt/gravel/grass road my be hard to distinguish now that all the timber scraps are covering it. When you go through the gate follow the dirt road and it will tend to go to the left for a while before turning right and going into the cemetery. When I was there earlier this year, the under growth was low enough to see some of the taller headstones and the large post that mark the entrance to the cemetery. You could actually look back toward the main highway and see where you were parked. Now, however, I believe the new growth has blocked that view back to the highway. The GPS coordinates are N 32 48' 42.0", W093 37' 45.0" if this will help. There may be some small blue signs out in the field that point to the cemetery if they haven't been removed.
Caney Creek Cemetery - Bossier Parish

Does anyone on this message board know who owns the property that Caney Creek Cemetery rests on? It is grown up and badly needs clearing and cleaning up on a regular basis. There is an elderly woman that needs access and a way to be driven all the way to the gate of the cemetery from the main road which is estimated at near a mile. She is not able to walk that far and wishes to pay her respects to her grandfather. Here is what the cemetery looked like in February 2012 and is probably more grown up by now.

http://www.laahgp.genealogyvillage.com/Bossierfolder/caneycr...

I do not live close enough to help her with this but am appealing to anyone reading this for help in resolving her problem.
Thank you.

Carlin family cemetery in Franklin, LA unmarked

I would like to ask you about the Carlin Family cemetery in Franklin, LA. I visited recently from Tn and could not get an exact location as it is unmarked and on private property in some trees along the Bayou Teche. The markers have been read and turned in to findagrave.com BUT I wanted to get actual pictures of the markers when I was there doing family research.

Joseph Carlin was born in 1742 in Italy and came to LA as a soldier. around 1758. The town of Franklin in St Mary's Parish was originally called Carlin's Settlement. This cemetery is located on what used to be his property and his son, Honore, who built the home Arlington plantation which is on the Historic register. The home is on one side of the Bayou Teche and the cemetery, I was told, is directly across the bayou from the house. I was also told the last time that anyone heard of anyone going out to the cemetery that the cemetery was in bad disrepair and markers had fallen or broken
.
I looked and looked in what seemed to be the general area but there was nothing marking the cemetery in the woods from the road. The cemetery seems to be part of some private property that is planted with sugar cane and a no trespassing sign.
Needlessly to say that I was very sad to have traveled over 12 hours to see the home and cemetery and leave not having seen the inside of the house as it is not open for private tours nor having located the cemetery for pictures of my ancestors graves.

There are 11 graves that are supposed to be marked. Joseph Carlin 1742-1809 and his wife Francois 1748-1815. Sons Honore Carlin 1774-1845 and wife Marquerite Bourgeois 1773-?, Celestin Carlin 1768-1833 and wife Therese Provost 1766-1806, Denis Calrin 1767-1827 and wife Genevieve Derouen ?-1862, Celestin's son Celestin Theodule Carlin ?-?, 2 other relations, Adelaide Navarro Desmaret 1778-1813 and Marie Joseph Thibaud Legnon ?-1810.

Genevieve Derouen Carlin is the last known burial there in 1862. So you can see the historical significance of the last burial being 150 years ago but also that Joseph was the original founder of what later became known as Franklin, LA.

I would like to see this preserved and some kind of sign put up to mark the location for future generations and just of respect for these founders and ancestors. I am hoping to come back t the area either in June or the fall of this year to spend a week doing family research and sight seeing. It would be such an unbelievable experience to pay my respects to my ancestors and lay flowers there as well as possible pictures IF any markers are still there and IF anything can be done to make this accessible and easy to locate.

Thank you for your help!
my personal email is jujuwilloughby@bellsouth.net if it would be easier to contact me there. Again thanks for your help in seeing if we can do anything to preserve this cemetery.
Judy Hudgens Willoughby

Overton Cemetery - Webster Parish - Claiborne Parish Seat

An abandoned cemetery report was filed to day for Overton cemetery in what is now Webster Parish. This cemetery has a listing on Find A Grave from early 2011, however, visits to this cemetery were documented in 2003 where it was known at that time to exist on private property with broken or crumbling headstones. There were 3 to 5 headstones at the time of 2003. One of which included a Louisiana judge who was also a State Representative. The obituary is documented by LOUISiana Digital Library.

http://louisdl.louislibraries.org/cgi-bin/getimage.exe?CISOR...

http://www.mindenmemories.org/biographies/drewfamily/The%20D...

Cemetery Report
http://louisianacemeteries.x10hosting.com/index/index.php?op...

UNKNOWN cemetery - Orleans Parish

There is an 1895 Mississippi River Commission map that indicates a cemetery on or near Toledano Street, now at White Street in Orleans Parish. The New Orleans Regional ARCH has indicated that after 1930's this area was populated subdivision. Keeping in mind that the MRC was charged with maintaining information about RIVERS, and may have had additional information from RAILROADS, and older map references - this appears to be a good source of information. However, all newer maps of this area cannot confirm that a cemetery was or is at this location. It is possible that this cemetery was destroyed and then forgotten as it is near water on the Mississippi River and a local canal. More information is avaialable at louisianacemeteries.wikispaces.com including an excerpt of the mapped area from the Mississippi River Commission 1895. This cemetery is NOT Lafayette Cemetery No. 2.

A mystery!

Per Calcasieu Parish Librarian

Recent personal accounts indicate cemetery no longer exists....and there is nothing to photograph in the way of headstones.

The cemetery was not on Edgewood Road. The location is about 6 miles off of Edgewood Road and about a mile or 1.5 miles from Beckwith Creek. To get to where it was, one must go through two gates: the first is for Tall Pines Hunting Club and the second gate is for Five Fingers Hunting Club. This bypasses the Crown Point lease...

There are files in the wiki for Louisiana Cemetery Preservation that can assist with the recording of cemetery information. There is too much to list here.

There are a number of considerations in compiling the information from the cemetery.

I have preferences.... but I am not arguing when it comes to a volunteer who is gathering information.

First cemetery in Cameron Parish Louisiana has a dated signed transcript ( January 2000 by Beverly Delaney, a Calcasieu Parish librarian) that is available on LA USGENWEB. This transcript indicates an unknown "pilot" burial in 1946. This "unknown burial" was reported to the LA AG office and the Regional LA DEPT of ARCH under the LA CRT DEPT. This is a copy of the response received with regards to the "unknown pilot" who quite possibly could be a World War II veteran. According to Calcasieu Parish Library, there are no known newspaper issues to research that may have further information. You may view the cemetery transcript here:

http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/cameron/cemeteries/first.tx...

Dr. David Palmer is the Southwest Louisiana Regional contact for the LA DEPT of ARCHAEOLOGY.

Mr. Ryan Seidemann is the Louisiana Attorney General Office's Asst. As he mentioned, an archaeological investigation to locate the remains of this pilot in the cemetery is not warranted given the sparse evidence and lack of a threat to the cemetery. Remote sensing would only indicate the location and approximate dimensions of a burial pit, which would not address your question, and excavation would be intrusive and damaging to the remains of the other individuals interred there, with no guarantee of confirming the story. If this is something that you wish to pursue, the oral history and document trail are your best bets (in addition to the official documents, which might not exist anymore, you might luck out and find a newspaper account or mention in a bit of personal correspondence or journal or the like). You would need to keep very good notes and document all of your sources in this matter if you did luck out and find some additional information about the individual and his burial, and you wanted to (for example) have a marker with the individual's name placed at their interment site.

Thank you for your inquiry, and good luck with your historical research.

David T. You need JavaScript enabled to view it > wrote:

To whom it may concern:

You have, unfortunately, hit on a matter that does not have a simple solution. While the story is compelling, it seems to me that the only way to verify it is to speak to people from the area that may have been alive at the time. During this period (and in certain circumstances, still today), most rural cemeteries did not (nor were they required to) keep good records of those interred in their cemeteries. As Dr. Palmer will, no doubt, agree, any attempt to locate an unmarked grave of a particular person by remote sensing means will likely meet with failure. In addition, excavating an entire cemetery on the hope that the person will be buried with some remaining artifacts that identify him as the pilot in question is not only unnecessarily intrusive, but also unlikely to lead to a confirmation of the story that you noted. As you are, no doubt, aware, there are several laws in Louisiana that generally restrict the type of activity that it would take to make a positive identification of this rumor. Thus, it seems that in the absence of some eyewitness information, an effort to locate a random grave in this cemetery would not be indicated. It would be a fascinating story if it is true, I just do not see any practical, respectful way to prove its accuracy based upon the information available. Also, keep in mind that even if the local sheriff or coroner at the time had filled out some paperwork on the matter, much of the legal files of the parish were lost or substantially damaged in Hurricane Rita in 2005.

Best regards,

Ryan Seidemann

Ryan M. It was reported that this cemetery contained an internment of an unidentified pilot who washed up on Broussard Beach in 1946 still wearing his seat belt. He was interred in this cemetery as an unknown per transcripts from LA USGENWEB.

Is it possible that this unidentified person was a missing pilot of World War II?

I have attempted to contact the local Sheriff through email, but the email bounces.
Louisiana Historic Cemetery Preservation 2010

Louisiana Historic Cemetery Preservation Act 2010

This act was signed by the Governor of Louisiana, Gov. Bobby Jindal, on June 29, 2010. This Act. 707 (HB 527) can be downloaded as a PDF file from the Louisiana Legislature Web Portal at the following URL:

http://www.legis.state.la.us/billdata/streamdocument.asp?did...

The Act covers cemeteries that are unknown in Louisiana that are 50 years of age or older and includes isolated graves or grave sites in addition to cemeteries no longer in active use which are governed under the Louisiana Cemetery Board and who are not currently under state jurisdiction. Also the Act defines an "abandoned cemetery" and "historic cemetery" and law pertaining to the discovery of a grave.

This webmaster is no lawyer and the following statement is no legal interpretation of the Act but my own personal interpretation (opinion) of the Act itself as I understand it read.

This Revised Statute would include cemeteries held on private property, not under any other jurisdiction where the internments are noted (headstones/tombstones/markers) or have unmarked burials (sunken areas, evidence or written historical proof of internment) determined by the coroner/LA DEPT ARCHEALOGY older than fifty years, and includes penalties for disturbing these historic sites which are now under the authority of the Louisiana Department of Culture Recreation and Tourism and require permit to disturb. Upon discovery, these sites should be reported to the aforementioned Department of Culture Recreation and Tourism, local Sheriff and the Attorney General immediately and no later than 72 hours after discovery.

HB NO. 527 ENROLLED
CODING: Words in struck through type are deletions from existing law; words underscored
are additions.
1 §932. Legislative declaration of intent
2 The legislature hereby finds the demolition, destruction, and damage of
3 historic cemeteries and isolated graves a disrespectful practice. The legislature
4 further finds that existing state laws do not provide for the adequate protection of
5 historic cemeteries that are not under the jurisdiction of the Louisiana Cemetery
6 Board, are not on state lands, and are not solely comprised of unmarked graves.
7 Cemeteries are considered bymost cultures to be sacred spaces. In addition to being
8 resting places for our dead, many of Louisiana's cemeteries are repositories of
9 significant examples of art, architecture, and archaeology as well as containing the
10 history of their respective communities. The importance of cemeteries should not
11 be taken lightly, as these significant elements represent a substantial tourist attraction
12 for the state of Louisiana, and also present an endless source of data for historians,
13 taphologists, anthropologists, archaeologists, and genealogists that collectively lead
14 us to a better understanding of our own culture.

18 (1) "Abandoned cemetery" shall mean any cemetery which is no longer being
19 used for interments, is not being maintained in good condition, and has fallen into
20 a state of disrepair, including tombs and headstones that have collapsed or been
21 destroyed, walls and fences that have fallen apart, and trees and bushes that have
22 grown amongst and within grave spaces.

13 (11) "Historic cemetery" shall mean any abandoned cemetery located in the
14 state that is more than fifty years old and is not subject to the laws, rules, and
15 regulations of the board or Chapter 10-A of Title 8 of the Louisiana Revised Statutes
16 of 1950.

21 §939. Discovery of historic cemetery or isolated grave
22 A. Any person who has reason to believe he has discovered a historic
23 cemetery or an isolated grave shall notify the department through the division within
24 seventy-two hours of the discovery.
25 B. Any activity that may disturb the historic cemetery or isolated grave shall
26 immediately cease upon discovery. No activity which shall disturb the historic
27 cemetery or isolated grave shall resume until the department has issued a permit
28 governing the disposition of the historic cemetery or isolated grave. In no event shall
29 the department take longer than thirty days to decide on issuance of a permit without
30 the written agreement of all parties.

15 §943. Exclusions
16 The provisions of this Chapter shall not apply to the following:
17 (1) A cemetery operated under the authority and regulation of the board.
18 (2) An unmarked burial site that is covered under the authority and
19 regulation of the division or Chapter 10-A of Title 8 of the Louisiana Revised
20 Statutes of 1950.
21 (3) Normal cleaning of grave spaces and grounds maintenance.
22 (4) Grave spaces within abandoned cemeteries that are less than fifty years
23 old.

24 §937. Unlawful acts
25 A. It is unlawful for any person, entity, or group, to whom the department
26 has not issued a permit, to knowingly:
27 (1) Disturb a historic cemetery or an isolated grave.
28 (2) Allow any person, entity, or group access to a historic cemetery or an
29 isolated grave for the purpose of disturbing any such cemetery or grave.

HB NO. 527 ENROLLED
CODING: Words in struck through type are deletions from existing law; words underscored
are additions.

Unlawful acts (continued)
1 (3) Provide funds to or for any person, entity, or group for the purpose of
2 disturbing any historic cemetery or isolated grave.
3 B. Each violation of this Section shall be punishable upon conviction of a
4 first offense by a fine of not more than five thousand dollars or imprisonment for not
5 more than one year, or both. Upon conviction of a second or subsequent offense
6 each violation shall be punishable by imprisonment for not more than two years or
7 a fine of not more than ten thousand dollars, or both. Each disturbance of a historic
8 cemetery or isolated grave constitutes a separate offense.

AND [Excerpt]
This ACT to
...establish the Louisiana Historic Cemetery Preservation
5 Program within the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, office of
6 cultural development, division of archaeology

Baton Rouge, Louisiana: Louisiana State University Thesis, 1936. v2/p239

To see why USGS listed it as an alternate name for NORWOOD, EAST FELICIANA. Otherwise, I would think they are in the wrong spot, too.

Hello,
On Find A Grave I put the 5 Ebey's in there for the Norwood Cemetery & I was talking with a person from that area working on my request for photos. He went to the exact site and did not find my family's headstones but lots of unmarked graves. I have never been there. Based upon the D.A.R. recordings in the 1950's/60's it had alot of people in it. The other cemetery you mention (Rousseaux-LaCombe)is located in St Tammany Parish. My family had mentioned in the past that their grandparents & some uncles were buried in the Norwood Cemt, located in Norwood. I looked in the surrounding cemeteries first & realized that the correct cemetery for my family & the DAR recordings was the same cemetery. Right now the GNIS website is down, but I will look later, but wanted to reply to you. I just stopped to see my e-mail.
Thanks,
Marlon

Hello
I had surveyed that cemetery a couple years ago. there are a couple of graves that have no markers other than what the funeral home puts there. And if I remember correctly a couple of those Funeral Home Markers had the death date of 197?.
I dont live that far from that cemetery and if you'd like I can go back up there and try to see if I can find her.
Jessica
I've talked to a descendant of the Nash, the cemetery is named after. He said that an older gentlemen that lives on that same road (Magee Rd)takes care of what is taken care of. I wish I could remember his name. sorry
What family is she from? Could it be that there are some of her kin that is under a different name, maybe her mother's maiden name?

About this board

A number of Louisiana cemeteries do not appear on the USGS maps and are unknown, abandoned, or endangered. This board is to organize and support the historical significance of Louisiana cemeteries and Louisiana cemetery preservation as well as make others aware of an unknown or unidentified cemetery. Those interested in this board may be genealogists, historians, society members, parish government, churches or community members, those familiar with using remote sensing equipment and GPS in locating cemeteries. (In order to identify cemeteries to USGS for inclusion, GIS coordinates must be given.)

Promoting awareness is the first step to preservation.

Other related online resources:

http://louisianacemeteries.wikispaces.com/
# Louisiana Cemetery Preservation Wiki

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LouisianaCemeteryPreservation
# Louisiana Cemetery Preservation Yahoo Group

http://www.savinggraves-us.org/la/index.htm -
Louisiana Saving Graves
INFORMATION NO LONGER ONLINE - See WIKI for REPORT COPIES

http://louisianacemeteries.blogspot.com/
# Louisiana Cemeteries @ Blogger - a public blog about Louisiana Cemeteries.

http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Cemeteries/LA-CEMETERY...
# LA CEMETERY PRESERVATION- Nov. 2007 new mailing list for those interested in Louisiana Cemetery Preservation.

http://louisianacemeteries.wikispaces.com/
# Louisiana Cemeteries Wikispace - Community and Organizational support for Louisiana Cemetery Preservation, a public wiki with links to other local organizations and news.

http://louisiana-cemetery-preservation.ning.com/
# Community Ning for Louisiana Cemetery Preservation - Upload your Louisiana Cemetery photos

http://www.gravestonestudies.org/
# The Association for Gravestone Studies - "The Association for Gravestone Studies (AGS) was founded in 1977 for the purpose of furthering the study and preservation of gravestones.
