St Ann's Cemetery in Vail, Iowa
Does anyone have access or know of anyone that has access to St. Ann's Cemtery records? Have numerous relatives there. Maguire, McAlpin, Fitzsimmons.

Re: St Ann's Cemetery in Vail, Iowa
You might try calling Father Thomas at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Vail. I was there this past Sep., and was able to get copies of birth and marriage certificates from him. Don't have his phone No. at hand, but if you need it, I can get it.
I also took photos of many of the tombstones, including some of the Fitzsimmons, and would be happy to send them along. Let me know.

Hi, it would be nice if you could submit your photos to the tombstone project. Did you happen to get any with the names of Bral, Crampton, Brown, Farber, Brockelsby, Cousins? I am not sure but I think that it is St. Ann's where when I was a young girl, grandpa, as we were driving down the road of the cemetery would tell the story where a man sitting under a tree was hit by lightning and killed. Re: St Ann's Cemetery in Vail, Iowa
Thank you Bill. I would like the Father's phone number so I could make an appointment to visit St. Anns.
Are you doing research on the Fitzsimmons? I have some pictures of their tombstones from St. Ann's, also. Let's compare.

Re: St Ann's Cemetery in Vail, Iowa
St. Ann's is the cemetery where they boy was struck by lightening. My grandfather, Lloyd Brogan was a grave digger there. Many of the Brogan's are buried there. His father lived in the white house to the left of the cemetery. I took almost 100 pictures when I was there last summer. I will also be going back there this next July/August, so I can take some more of one's any of you are interested in.

Re: St Ann's Cemetery in Vail, Iowa
Father Thomas is a very kind man. I made an appointment when I was there last summer and he allowed me to look through their records and stuff. It was great!!!! Unfortunately he was out while I was there, so I didn't meet him personally but hope to when I go back this summer.

Re: St Ann's Cemetery in Vail, Iowa
Peggy, I cannot help you with cemetery records, but I know that my uncle went and, thanks to Father's graciousness, was able to sit down and look through all the records. I also have McAlpin relatives buried at St. Ann's. Cecilia McAlpin, my 3rd great grandmother is buried in Vail, as is my great grandmother, Kate White McCalpin. Cecilia's son, John, is my great great grandfather. Since you since you also had McGuire relatives at St. Ann's are you related through John's brother Patrick McAlpin? My uncle, Bill McCalpin, and I are the current family genealogists. I would love to hear from you and would be glad to share anything I have. Peggy McCalpin Clark

Re: St Ann's Cemetery in Vail, Iowa
Thank you so much for your message. We have to be cousins. Owen John McAlpin & Cecilia Gibbons McAlpin are my ggg grandparents. Their son, Patrick born March 10, 1818 and died July 8, 1902 in Vail is my gg grandfather. I did not know he had a brother, John. Patrick married Mary Kehoe and their daughter Mary Frances married Peter Maguire/Mcguire whom are my great grandparents. Their son, William is my grandfather. William's son, James(the youngest of ten) is my father. This is so great to meet you. Please tell me what you know about John and Patrick McAlpin. Peggy Maguire Rood

Owen John and Cecilia (Gibbons) McAlpin
Peggy, I was so glad to hear from you. It looks as if we are fourth cousins. OwenJohn McAlpin (c.1792-1838) and Cecilia Gibbons (c.1796-1886) had five children 1. Patrick McAlpin (1818-1902) m. Mary Kehoe (1823-1911) 2. Michael McAlpin (1821-1854) m. Bridget Leonard (1825-?) 3. Bridget Ann McAlpin (1826-1882) m. Ebenezer Davis (1820-1859) 4. John McCalpin (1828-1860) m. Mary Moran (1830 - 1912) 5. Maria McAlpin (1831-1917) m. Bart Regan (?-1860) m. Eli Jenkins (1814-1897)
Cecilia and the five children settled in southern Indiana by 1840.
Patrick married in Indiana in 1843, but then went to Louisiana for a few years. By 1847, he and his family were back in Indiana for a short time before moving to Scott Co., Iowa, In 1865, they moved toClinton Co. and in 1874 to Crawford Co.
Michael stayed in Indiana. He is buried with two of his sons in St. Patrick Cemetery, Madison Township, Jefferson Co., Indiana.
Bridget married Ebenezer Davis in 1843. They lived in North Vernon, Jennings Co, Indiana and had 7 children. Unfortunately, Ebenezer died when the youngest was only a year old. Bridget stayed in North Vernon until shortly before she died. She is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana.
By the 1850 census, the 3 oldest children were married. John (my gg grandfather) was listed as the head of the household and a barkeeper with his mother Cecilia and his younger sister Maria. He had fallen in love with all the steamboats and by 1854, he and Cecilia moved to St. Louis (Maria married in 1852). There John married Mary Moran on November 1, 1855. They had 3 children -William (1856-1937), John (1858-1862), and Joseph (1860-1873). Sadly, in April of 1860, John was on a steamboat when it exploded and caught on fire. He was in the river for several days before he was rescued, and he died June 22, 1860. About 1878, Mary married widower Robert Kelleher, father of seven children. He died in 1898 and Mary November 22,1912 and they are both buried, as in John, in Calvary Cemetery, St. Louis.
Maria married Bart Regan in 1852. They had three children - the first two born in Madison, Indiana and the third in St. Louis. The last being born just before her Uncle John died and only a month before her father died on July 21, 1860. In 1863, Maria married Eli Jenkins in Scott Co., Iowa. Eli and Maria and four children. Maria is buried in El Reno, Oklahoma.
My great grandfather is the only one of John and Mary's children to live to adulthood. William F. McCalpin was born August 1856 in St. Louis. On February 13, 1884, he married Kate White, a school teacher. They had 12 children. Kate was visiting family in Vail, Crawford Co., Iowa, when she died October 13, 1921. She is buried at Old Catholic Cemetery in Vail. William died in St. Louis on February 5, 1937 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery.
My grandfather is George McCalpin, 8th of 12 children. He was born May 4, 1894 in St. Louis. On September 1, 1920, he married Marguerite Miles. Marguerite was born in St. Louis on May 14, 1895. They had four children, three of whom lived to adulthood. Marguerite died August 15, 1970 and George died October 23, 1973. They are also buried at Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis.
Their second child, George is my father. He and my mother were both born in St. Louis and move to Texas after they were married and still live there.
Hope this helps fill in some of your blank spaces. It was so wonderful to hear from you!

Re: St Ann's Cemetery in Vail, Iowa
Paula, it is interesting to read about your grandfather. Did he know my ancestor, William Byrnes? William was a local mortician who died in 1946 from a traffic accident while transporting a body for burial. Many of my Byrnes are also buried at St. Ann's.
