i have an M. Smith but his dates are different than yours; i have he was a private in Comp. C; 36th VA, captured in Waynesboro; 3/2/65 captured, died Chronic diarrhea, 7/3/65

and an MT Smith also a private in Comp. B, 40th Ga died 12/2/63

these are from the Confederate dead list

no smith's under civilian dead

wow!! then under union dead is listed the same M T Smith with the same death date and regiment as above and beside his name they have (possibly took oath, listed in Capt Ahl's Batt'y) so he must have converted from confederacy to union. He was captured in Champion Hills on 6/9/63 which is much closer to the date you have; cause of death: variola (smallpox) i'm a nurse. ha

but no where do i have mumford listed only initials. you didn't say if he was a reb or a yank. :)
hope that helps alittle.

For anyone interested in the prisoners or the men stationed at Fort Delaware will want to visit the Fort Delaware Society website. www.fortdelaware.org The Society has an extensive data base of those who were at the Fort.

i'm only related that i was raised in Dela and my dad took his grandchildren to Fort Dela to "see the sights". Being an amateur geneologist myself, i bought the book of dead union confederate and civilian people who died there. then i put it on the internet for people to be able to call me for their family connections

so i guess it works. ha

Linda, I hope you are still there. I just started researching an ancestor who died at Ft Delaware. If he is in the book I would need a copy of the page, the title page of the book, and a copy of the cover. His name was Francis M. Pangle. (Sometimes listed as Pangley). He was captured May 16, 1863, and died at the fort on July 23, 1863. He belonged to the 39 GA Infantry Co D.
Any help would be appreciated.

I am justing seeing your post about the Fort Delaware soldiers/prisoners. My great-great grandfather Frederick A(Aaron)Baker died at Fort Delaware July 31, 1864. He was a Confederate soldier. Do you show him in the book?

Also, I think I read that there is a mass grave with a marker that lists all the persons who died there. Do you know about that?

Thanks for any info.

F.A. Baker 5th Ark, Co C, captured in Helena, AR July 04, 1864. Died of Typhoid/Malaria Fever on July 31, 1864 and is probably buried at Finns Point National Cemetery. You can see pictures at Finns Point http://www.interment.net/data/us/nj/salem/finns/index.htm The tall obelisk is the Conf. memorial and there are bronze plates around it with the names of the men buried in the cemetery. I hope this helps.
