Gen. Godrey, Indian Fighter, Dies
Cookstown NJ April 1 (A.P.) Gen Edward S. Godfrey, veteran of Indian wars, died here tonight at age of 88
Brig Gen. Edward Settle Godfrey, a veteran of the battle against the Indians at Little Big Horn escaped the fate of Gen. Custer and his troop in that massacre by temporarily ignoring orders of his superior officer. Guarding an advanced position after Custer and his force had been wiped out, he received orders to retreat when other troops were thrown back on his position. As the Indians were being heavily reinforced, Gen Godfrey senes the danger of a repetition of the Custer massacre. Disregarding the command, he covered the troops that retread to that position, halted the Indians, finally drove them to cover and then with is own men fell back.
He is mentioned in 21 other articles in the Washington Post. His wife Ida Godfrey's funeral notice in Feb 1941 mentions son Dr. Edward S. Godfrey Jr of Albany NY , State director of Health , daughter Miss Mary Godrey of 1835 K St NYW Washington.
