Surnames: Hume
I have several ancestors who died in the late 19th and early 20th century. All lived in New Haven and all were active in churches there. Hannah D Hume, d. 18 Apr 1903, daughters, Sarah Jane Hume, d. 6 Apr 1903 and Isabella Williams Hume d. 3 Jun 1898. All were very active in the United Church on the Green. In addition, son Edward Sackett Hume, d. 10 Jan 1908. He was ordained in the Third Church. Both Sarah and Edward were missionaries in India. Bella was a Congregational pastor who worked with the American Missionary Association in Lousiana.
I would be most thankful for any help.

I found this obit for Hannah and I also found one for Edward. You do not mention Robert, but I found info on him if you want it.

Obit: The Hartford Courant, Hartford, CT published April 21, 1903

Mrs. Hannah P. Hume, widow of Robert W. Hume, died Sunday afternoon at her home in New Haven after an illness of about a week. She was well known in missionary circles in New Haven. Her daughter, Miss Sarah J. Hume, died only a short time ago and this is thought to have hastened Mrs. Hume's death. Her husband was for many years a missionary in Africa. She is survived by two sons, Robert A. and Edward S. Hume, both of whom are connected with the missionary college at Ahmednegar, India, and a daughter, Mrs. Alfred Miller of New Haven.

The Rev. Edward S. Hume

The Rev. Edward S. Hume, for many years a missionary of the American Board of Foreign Missions, died yesterday in the Presbyterian Hospital, aged 60 years. He was a son of a missionary, the Rev. Robert W. Hume, and was born in India and spent much of his life in that country. He was graduated from Yale in 1870 and from the Hartford Theological Seminary in 1874. He went at once to India and remained there until 1894, when he returned and made his home in New Haven. One of his six children is Dr. Edward H. Hume, head of Yale Mission in China. One of his daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Hunnesberger, is a missionary in Bombay, and another, Mrs. O. D. Wanamaker, in Canton China. A third daughter is in Vassar College. Mr. Hume leaves a widow. The funeral will be held in New Haven on Sunday

Betty, many thanks for your help. I would appreciate your offer to send the info on Robert Hume. I assume it refers to Robert A Hume also a son of Hannah. Is there any way to find out where all these folks were buried? I am also looking for Catherine Rose Hume Miller who was married to Arthur Miller. He was a Yale faculty member.

My main interest at this time is Hannah Derby Sackett Hume. She refers to herself as Hannah Derby Hume. She was in India with her husband Robert Wilson Hume from 1839 to 1854. She had seven children, started a boarding school for girls, and returned to the US a widow. Somehow she put all her living children through college. The boys to Yale and the girls to various women's colleges. Much of the chapter on the mission work of people associated with the United Church in Boston centers on her and her children.

Unfortunatly, my efforts to contact the current head of that church have been met with silence. This is sad because the church has or had extensive records on its missionaries and their work. It seems to me that the church would be anxious to honor the work of its past members but that does not seem to be the case.

What families are you researching?

Again, thanks for your help.
Jack

Jack,
I can't attach the articles from the New Haven Register because of the extension. Email me at inola82@yahoo.com and I’ll send them along.
I'm using America's Genealogy Bank and they have a few years of the NH Register indexed.
I couldn't find an obituary, but I do have some articles mentioning Hannah D. Hume and her children,
Article #1 Afternoon [Illegible] and Workingmen's Meeting
