Burrow Cemetery, Monette, Arkansas
I wanted to post this, and I'll leave you all with it! I have found many DIFFERNET surnames in the Burrow Cemetery outside of Monette, Arkansas... I do not know the county, but it's in BETWEEN Lake City, & Monette. I took pictures. Only a few of the pictures I took came out -- I'll list the ones I can see at all for everyone to view/discuss... keep in mind that I don't know anything about these people, except that they were SUPPOSED to be related to the Burrow's (my family). I have only recently found this graveyard, and by making everyone aware of it, I'm hoping to change it's sad condition..... Here are some of the graves, as I can read them:
MOTHER: Eva May PYLAND -- born 1881, died 1928 In loving Memory
BROTHER: Jim B. PYLAND Feb 22, 1909 June 7, 1939 Loving Memory
(on a small marker with just name & dates) W.L. DAVIDSON 1891 - 1931
This stone is actually some sort of monument, and I'll list everything on it... (at the top, standing about 6' high, in a circular patter, are the words:) WOODSMAN OF THE WORLD ASSOCIATION (at the bottom of this one) William (R?) COBB born Nov. (30?) 1876 died (June 11, 1915 -?)
(small marker, with just name & dates) Delora OWEN 1918 - 1942
W.L. PETIGREW (maybe PEDIGREW?) born March (11, 1879 ?) died (cannot read it, as it's mostly buried!)
(3 on one stone!) Minnie Ray 1898 - (1918?) Dossie Ray 1899 - (1918?) (Herbert, or Ebert?) Ray (can't read these dates at all!)
It has that same monument on the top: Woodsman of the World at the bottom: Arthur A. STRICKLAND Feb 23, 1894 Dec. (31,1924 ?)
Louis A. (maybe Louisa) STRICKLAND june ? after that I can't read it!
Francis, daughter of (can't read) THURMAN Dec. 4, 1911 April 2, 1913 (could be 1918)
Mary Lee daughter of G.W., & F. (M?) THURMAN (sept?) 17, 1912 (Nov?) 12, 1912
(there were several memorial stones from "WOODSMAN OF THE WORLD ASSOCIATION -- I don't know what that is! On the bottom of this one is --) H.H. RICHIE Feb. 14, 1887 Oct. 4, 1924
Paul son of Henry & Goldie RICHIE Dec. (1, 1917 ?) Feb. (26, 1919 ?)
Goldie FRAZIER RICHIE wife of Henry RICHIE born June 29, 1899 died May 28, 1922 *She was the sunshine of our lives*
The cemetery has been SADLY forgotten, and most graves were put there between 1840 - 1940. I can't remember the earliest graves for ANY of the surnames, but the latest ones I beleive were 1943 (not Pyland). I just thought I'd let some of you know, as I REALLY beleive they are some of your family members. Other surnames include: BURROW, BEAKLEY, CAMERON/CAMBRON, THURMAN, RAY, RITCHIE/RICHIE, FRAZIER, OWEN, DAVIDSON, STRICTLAND/STRICLIN, COBB, PETIGREW There may be more surnames, but as most of my pictures didn't turn out, I don't remember them all, and many of them were unrecognizable beyond repair!! I hope that I can connect these long forgotten souls to someone who wishes to find them! Then maybe we'd have enough people to be able to keep the place up to standards!! HAPPY HUNTING! Renia

Re: Burrow Cemetery, Monette, Arkansas
I was searching for my husbands grandfather and came upon your message. I found a name on the list that matches his name Ebert Ray he died in Baker City, OR in 1989. We are curious to know if any of his ancestors might be buried in this cemetery his full name is Ebert Leroy Ray born in the 1920's his wife's name is Marion. We are wondering if anyone has any info. on the Ray family.

Re: Burrow Cemetery, Monette, Arkansas
My great grandmother is buried in the Burrow Cemetery. I did not know her she passed away in 1915. I just found out about the cemetery last year when I started working on my genealogy for the Burrow family. I did locate the cemetery and it is in unthinkable condition. I am very interested in working on the up keep of the cemetery. Do you live around the Monette area in Arkansas?

Re: Burrow Cemetery, Monette, Arkansas
I don't live very close at all to Monett. Something like over 100 miles. I live 86 miles from Jonesboro. My great Aunt and her husband have many times went there to mow or clean up, but haven't been healthy enough for many years to do so now.

Re: Burrow Cemetery, Monette, Arkansas
Woodsmen of the World is an organization that was originally open to (white) males 18-45 and excluded men in hazardous jobs. It is known now as Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society/Omaha Woodmen Life Insurance Society. Until the 1920's every member was provided with a grave marker and the society is still quoted today as saying, "no Woodsman shall rest in an unmarked grave." Information source is Stories in Stone: A Field Guide to Cemetery Symbolism and Iconography, Douglas Keister, 2004.

As your post is from 2007, you have probably found this site by now. Just in case you haven't... It's the Genealogy Society of Craighead County site and has an updated name list for the Burrow Cemetery http://www.gscca.net/burrow.htm

Re: Burrow Cemetery, Monette, Arkansas
Hi, I have a story for you in hopes that you could help. My Grandfather died sometime between 1930 and 1938. You would think there was a death certificate but I can't find one. A few of years ago I spoke to and elderly lady who was the Granddaughter of my Grandfathers second wife and was present when he passed. She remembers it was in the spring. They took him into town and came back with him in a coffin. They had a service there at the farm then they put him on a buckboard and took him to be buried. She does not know where. She doesn't remember whether they went toward Monette or toward Lake City. His name was Samuel Gifford. He was born in 1868. I live in Arizona and don't know the area at all. I have been told the County lines changed around that time might be the reason no death was recorded. Thank you. Rhonda
