Hi Susan, the Douglas/Brownlee stone has survived but it is only a marker stone, the inscription reads "1829 The intended burying place for Robert Douglas and Elizabeth Brownlee his spouse".
I have a picture of the stone, which I have attached as a file to this message.

Regarding Robert Douglas who died in 1837. There is a stone (not sure if it has survived but it was there in 1983). It was erected by "his son James in memory of his father Robert Douglas who died 4th September 1837". It means nothing in itself, it could well be another Robert Douglas. Sadly, the burial plot records for the old churchyard (not the cemetery) only begin about 1879 or 1880. In the corresponding plot to the Robert Douglas stone there is only one entry. "William Hamilton aged 74 years, interred on 9th January 1899". again, it really means nothing on its own.
However, what has survived are the gravediggers Day Books, daily diaries of burials, actually with more information than the plot book but they do not mention a specific plot, only "old churchyard" as place of burial.
I found 4 interesting entries.
All dates are of burial and all interments are in the old churchyard.

ELIZABETH HAMILTON, housewife, Wishaw, aged 46 years, married.
Parents - James Douglas & Janet Douglas.
9th June 1873.

Now, that would tie in with the William Hamilton who is buried in the Douglas plot and the ages match for husband & wife. So I looked for children of William Hamilton and Elizabeth Douglas.

ELIZABETH T. MUIRHEAD, housewife, Wishaw, aged 25 years, married.
Parents - William Hamilton & Elizabeth Douglas.
11th February 1878.

Also the following 2 children, the mother's name, I think, was Lisa, a diminutive of Elizabeth but it has been taken down as Isa (a very common name here).

THOMAS MUIRHEAD, Wishaw, aged 8 months.
Parents - David Muirhead & Isa Hamilton.
20th April 1875.

ELIZABETH D. MUIRHEAD, Wishaw, aged 6 months.
Parents - David Muirhead & Isabella T. Hamilton.
30th July 1878.

I feel sure "Isabella/Isa" is the daughter of William Hamilton & Elizabeth Douglas. The child being "Elizabeth D." she would have been the eldest daughter and therefor named after her maternal grandmother Elizabeth Douglas. Also the middle initial "T" is there both times.

I hope this little information is of some use to you.

Kind regards,
Jim

Jim,
I have been following the emails that you and Ian have been exchanging. I too come from the Robert Douglas and Elisabeth Brounlie line and hope to be able to see their headstone. Their daughter Janet married another Douglas (just to confuse things), a James Douglas, s/o of Robert Douglas and Mary McAlpine. Years ago I was told that this Robert Douglas age 59, died Sept. 4, 1837 and was buried at Cambusnethan Cemetery. Mary McAlpine is also believed to be buried there but as yet I am uncertain of her death date. Do you have any records of these burials and possibly any other members of this family?
Thanks Susan.

Hi Ian,

You are right about the connection between the "Sawmill Brownlees" and the Garrion Mill crowd, I have seen a transcript of the original family letter but I think I may have told you all this years ago. (I have a letter here you sent me in 1985!)
I'm not sure about the torfoot connection though, "iffy" to say the least.

Here's some stuff I found in the Cambusnethan burial records. All of the following are buried in the old churchyard on the dates given.

JOHN DOUGLAS, weaver, Wishaw, aged 62 years, married.
Parents - Robert Douglas & Elizabeth Brownlie.
26th November 1863.

ROBERT D. REID, mason, Glasgow, aged 43 years, married.
Parents - William Reid & Mary Douglas.
3rd January 1873.

ELIZABETH DOUGLAS, housekeeper, Wishaw, aged 67 years, widow.
Parents - James Young & Elizabeth Martin.
4th February 1873.

CHRISTINA DOUGLAS, housewife, Glasgow, aged 34 years, married.
Parents - John Douglas & Elizabeth Young.
31st December 1877.

AGNES HARRISON, housewife, Wishaw, aged 34 years, married.
Parents - John Douglas & Elizabeth Young.
27th July 1878.

STILLBORN MALE HARRISON, Wemyssbank Orchard.
Parents - John Harrison & Agnes Douglas.
12th June 1872.

MARY HARRISON, Wishaw, aged 11 months.
Parents - John Harrison & Agnes Douglas.
16th May 1879.

All of the following are in plot 256 of the old Private burial ground, next to the churchyard.

STILLBORN MALE HARRISON, Overtown.
Parents - John Harrison & Agnes Douglas.
10th April 1871.

STILLBORN FEMALE HARVEY, Wishaw.
Parents - John Harvey & Mary Ann Douglas.
20th March 1871.

WILLIAM MONTGOMERY, blacksmith, Shotts, aged 27 years. (Unmarried?)
Father - Hugh Montgomery. (No mother's name).
27th July 1872.

JOSEPH L. HARVIE, Wishaw, aged 3 weeks.
Parents - John Harvie & Maggie Little.
24th October 1891.

ELIZABETH HARVIE, Wishaw, aged 3 weeks.
Parents - John Harvie & Maggie Little.
23rd January 1893.

WILLIAM HARVIE, schoolboy, Wishaw, aged 10 years.
Parents - John Harvie & Margaret Little.
28th December 1909.

That's all I have at the moment. I was looking at "100 Years in Timber" the author is pretty sure about the origins of James Brownlee 1778 - 1835.

Regards,

Jim

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the confirmation, that's great.

Yes she did marry William Reid. I haven't found a birth, marriage or death for him as yet.

Mary Douglas and an unknown Somerville had my 2nd great grandmother:
Elizabeth Somerville born c1811 died 24 February 1874.

Mary and William Reid had the following (at least) 3 children:
1. Robert Reid born 1825 in Wishaw
2. Mary Ann Reid born 1826 in Wishaw
3. Alexander Reid born 1829 in Wishaw

Through a general search on Scotland's People I have children of John Douglas born 15 August 1801 died 15 November 1863 and Elizabeth Young born c1806 died 1 February 1873 as:
1. Robert Douglas born c1826 died 13 December 1861 in Wishaw
2. Elizabeth Douglas born c1829 died 9 October 1898 in Uphall, West Lothian
3. Marion Douglas born c1831
4. James Douglas born c1833
5. Helen Douglas born 13 July 1835 died 28 August 1908 in Broxburn, West Lothian
6. Christiana Douglas born c1837
7. Margaret Douglas born c1838 died 27 January 1856 in Wishaw
8. George Douglas born c1840
9. Agnes Douglas c1843

I have been beavering away in Cambusnethan connecting Brownlie, Barrie, Baillie, Bell, Duncan, Douglas, Russell, Wallace, Forrest and Hamilton.

I am personally not only a Brownlee by the male line but also through the female line from my 2nd great grandmother Elizabeth Somerville to Mary Douglas to Elizabeth Brownlie.

I also have 4th great grandparents John Barrie and Christian Russell who had a son who married into the Forrest family which are connected to the James Brownlee of City Saw Mills in Glasgow and the Headlesscross Brownlees from which William Brownlee, Provost of Dundee came.

So it's a tangled web that has been weaved by the weavers of Cambusnethan.

One of my goals has been to connect up the Brownlee families of Cambusnethan to the Torfoot Brownlees. Although there are a number of connections showing on Ancestry, they are more fictional than factual. I am running quite a number of Cambusnethan families on Ancestry and have managed to merge three charts so far.

I am also yet to connect the saw milling Brownlees with the Garrion millers. I know that they connect because of the letters that exist but yet to connect the dots.

Let me know if you'd like any more info on these families. Likewise if you have anything, I'd always be grateful.

I find it all quite fascinating.

Best regards,

Ian Brownlee
Hi Ian, I checked the age on the transcript and it is 62. This may well have been transcribed wrongly or the informant could have given the wrong information. Either way, it doesn't really matter as the correct parents are given.
I had a quick look for siblings of John, only found one.

MARY REID, Wishaw, aged 77 years, widow.
Parents - Robert Douglas & Elizabeth Brownlie.
Buried in the old churchyard on 4th April 1863.

Her husband may have been William Reid, can you confirm this?

Regards,
Jim

Hi Jim, how are you?
Re John Douglas
I see that you have the following:
JOHN DOUGLAS, weaver, Wishaw, aged 82 years, married.
Parents - Robert Douglas & Elizabeth Brownlie.
Buried 20th November 1863.
I agree with the burial but I have a query on the age. Was he recorded on the stone as 82 years or on written record? I have him being born in 1801 which would make him 62 not 82. I transcribed the dates from microfilm (original handwriting which was quite readable) and the record also showed that John was their eighth child. This would make a birth of 1781 very difficult given that Elizabeth would have only been 15 in 1781. Robert Douglas would have been 18 in 1781.
My transcription gave the birth as follows: Born 15 August 1801 and Baptized 30 August 1801. John Douglas, son to Robert Douglas and Elizabeth Brounlee at Wishawtoun. Their 8th child.
I could confirm this on Scotland's People if you feel that what you are saying is correct. It just doesn't seem at all feasible to me.
I do agree with Mary Reid. Mary was my 3rd great grandmother. I do have quite a bit of information on her although I wasn't aware that she was buried at Cambusnethan Old Cemetery. She died on 2nd April 1863.
I stood outside Cambusnethan Old Churchyard on a bitterly cold November morning in 2004 quite disappointed to see the padlocked gate. Evidently locked due to vandalism.
I will see if I can find who Mary Milroy 'belonged to'.
MARY R. MILROY, aged 17 months. Buried 30th December 1901.
Best regards,
Ian Brownlee
Australia
Does anyone have the CD's that lists the cemeteries in West Lothian? I am looking for a listing for Whitburn Cemetery to try and find the burial for the following individuals:
Margaret Hamilton: d. Nov 1891 in Whitburn.
Andrew Hamilton: d. in 1901 in Whitburn.
Robert Hamilton: d. Not know other than he is still alive for the 1901 census/ Whitburn and he was born in 1824/25 in Glasgow.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Joan

Hi Susan,

It may not be possible to get close to this stone now, much of the old churchyard has been cordoned off for safety reasons. However, it is easy to see from the main road. If you stand on the street with the ruined church in front of you (directly behind, accross the street should be newly built houses)there is a narrow strip of ground between the church wall and the boundry wall. At the right corner of the church,at the widest part (there is a part of the wall that jutts out further than the rest, it's not at that part) about 2 rows in from the corner, your stone should be at the nearest point to the boundry wall in a row of about 7 stones.
I have checked the records for this Douglas plot. It is, as you know, a very old plot but the records are very poor, so only 3 entries for it. They are as follows -
MARY R. MILROY, aged 17 months. Buried 30th December 1901.

MARY REID, pauper, Wishaw, aged 77 years, widow.
Parents - Robert Douglas & Elizabeth Brownlie.
Buried 4th April 1863.

JOHN DOUGLAS, weaver, Wishaw, aged 82 years, married.
Parents - Robert Douglas & Elizabeth Brownlie.
Buried 20th November 1863.

Hope this helps.

Jim.
Hello there

Sorry for the late reply to your message. I have had a look for the burial of David Hamill in High Blantyre Cemetery and he was buried in what we term as Common Ground or Consecrated ground on 17th Nov 1879. As for his wife, Catherine White, I cannot say for certain where she is buried as High Blantyre Cemetery did not start interments until 1875 so therefore she is likely to be buried elsewhere. Hope this information is of use to you.

kindest regards
Elizabeth

Hi Maree

It is unlikely that your relative was buried in High Blantyre as the cemetery there didn't have it's first interments until 1875. It might be possible your relative might be buried either in the local churchyard or perhaps at the Bent cemetery in Hamilton. Wish I could have been of more help.

Elizabeth

For my grandmother I went to the wee office in Lambhill with her married name and maiden name, date of birth and death that I got from death certificate and they got someone to show me the grave. For my grandfather I wrote to Cemeteries & Crematoria Registrar 20 Trongate Glasgow G1 5ES, with his name and dates of birth and death they got back to me saying he was in St Kentigern's with plot number and a list of other family member's with him and a phone number call and someone would take me to the grave and it didn't cost me anything that was about 2003.I don't know about now??

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=63...

Hi Kaye,
Thanks for replying. As you may well know our Uncle Tom in Australia has recently passed and being the only relative in Scotland have been asked to find out about the grave so that some of his ashes can be placed there. It is located at the top of the cemetry against the back wall-lair 2 plot number 2. The headstone is rather tired looking so I have asked for a quote to have it restored in prepartion for Uncle Tom's interment.
Once I have all the details I will email Norah so she can let the family know.
Regards
Lesley x

Hi All

I am presently transcribing the lair books for the above cemetery. So far I've done 1860 (when it opened) to 1884. Ive also taken photographs of all the tombsones.
The cemetery served the Roman Catholic community in New and Old Monkland, Airdrie, Coatbridge, and the villages of Clarkston, Plains, Caldercruix, Whiterigg, Longrigend, Glenboig, Darngavel, Coatdyke, Calderbank and Stand.

I have a facebook page for the cemetery which can be found here...
https://www.facebook.com/StJosephsCemeteryAirdrie

Anyone wishing lookups can ask via here or through the facebook page. This service is free. I can also put you in contact with people at North Lanarkshire Council should I be unable to assist you.

Chris

I have a few relatives who lived in Kilmadock buried at Blair Drummond cemetery(Kincardine in Monteith)
I found them by Stirling Council Cemeteries dept 14-20 Pitt Terrace Viewforth (01786 442559). They have the burial books for the churchyards and cemeteries in the area so you need to have an idea which graveyard( or at least the area they where living in when they died) and names and approx dates of death they can find who bought the plots and sometimes who is actually buried in which plot. Its a bit hit and miss, some graveyards had charts, others don't
Also ask for directions on how to find the grave yard as they are not always next to the church

hope this helps
Pam
Hi

Does anyone know where to access cemetery records for Doune and Kilmadock. I think that several members of my Bain (Bayne) and Thomson families were probably buried there mostly before 1855.

Thanks

Cathy

Hi Nancy,
Great to hear from you and sorry that it has taken me so long to reply. How are things going? I look forward to hearing from you once you have had a chance to look at your pictures.
I have to admit, I am at a bit of a brick wall when it comes to the McTavish family and how they fit in Scotland.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Brad

Hi Maggie!
I just responded to Brad's note regarding John Mc (or MacTavish. My g.g.grandfather's name was John Thompson of the McTavish clan. He was born in Antrim, Ireland of Scottish parents, their names, unknown. "My" John was born in 1810 and died in Quebec and buried in the Wesley/Knox cemetery in Hemmingford, Quebec. I'd love it if your John and Peggy were his parents. I am awaiting my thumb drive to inspect pictures of gravestones that I took this month in the Kilmartin area. I'll keep you apprised of my search.
Nancy

Hi Brad!
I just returned from the Argyll area of Scotland, looking for some ancestry tips. My g.g.grandfather, John, born 1810 Antrim, Scotland to Scottish parents, names undisclosed. and buried in Wesley-Knox cemetery, Hemmingford, Quebec. I have photographed Mc and MacTavish gravestones in the Kilmartin cemetery and in one other cemetery in the area, and should soon be reviewing pictures and data. It would be wonderful if we could begin to unravel the mystery. I'll keep you posted, and please keep me in your file. Nancy Thompson

Hi Bob

Has someone done this for you yet? I am not familiar with this cemetery but I believe it is very near Mount Vernon Cemetery, which I would like to go visit in the next few weeks (I live a very short bus journey away). I will see if I can find this headstone for you if the cemetery is not too big, and take some photos.

Regards,
Michael
