Marking unmarked graves

I have several ancestors in unmarked graves, and I am exploring the possibility of having those graves marked. Has anyone else ever done this? Any tips and tricks that I might benefit from, lessons learned, etc.? I just want simple markers, I figure something is better than nothing.

I am in the process of doing the same thing. I figure everyone deserves some sort of marker. My ancestors are buried in Georgia and I have been there in the last month taking pictures. I have talked with the cemetery folks and all I need to do is have a letter witnessed and notarized indicating that I have talked with any living relative and have their permission to do this. I am working with two different cemeteries and have agreed to what I want to put on the grave. Don't have to worry much about any relatives, all are gone now, but this is something I hope will help fill a void in my life. You do need to check with the cemetery to see what their procedure/requirements are today. Hope this helps.

If they served in any of the wars (even as far back as the Revolutionary War), you can get a free military stone for any unmarked grave or seriously damaged/degraded stone. The only thing you have to pay for is to have some one set the stone. I did this for one of my gg-grandfathers as his stone was all but unreadable and it was very satisfying. They were a poor family and most of the family, including his wife, had no markers. So at least he is marked. Since this is an old rural cemetery, there are really no records of just where the rest are buried.
