Hi to all,
I am seeking info. on a John philip Matthew died in Calcutta age 33 yrs. of Tyfoid Fever, around the year1865. He worked for Messers Cook & Co as an Accountant. He is bured at Episcopal Cemetery. Chowringhee.

I have tried to trace his birth, and have looked up many records at the British Library in london. Can't find a birth for him in India, and also having no success with finding a birth for him in England. I was always under the impression that he was the first of the line to go to India around the late 1840's. He married in 1851( in India)- a Rose Henrietta Rodrigues. So basically now I am stuck! I read his will at the BL but no place of birth was stated. I have been told many records are lost/destroyed etc. both in India, and records incomplete in this country as well.

If by any remote chance anyone else is searching for this family of- Matthew, or others mentioned above. Please contact me.

His son was a Henry Cairns Matthew and his son an Eswald Cairns Matthew (my grandfather). Other surnames I am interested in are: Prince, Rodrigues, Vassillion, also Borthwick and Farrell.

Many Thnaks.
