Can you give me the location and name of the cemetery? Knowing where cemetery is might help.

Thank you for such a fast response. You are absolutely right, more information would have been helpful.

This staff is next to my gg grandfather's , Alfred Parks 1828-1864, grave.
The cemetery is Albion Prairie Cemetery
Albion, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA

Again thank you for your reply.

The photo is very small. If you could post a bigger one, or if you could give your best guess of what those symbols are (they look like interlocking letters), that would help. Also, anything you know about Alfred (profession, religion, veteran status).

It appears to be two five pointed stars in the upper left and right corners. The upper center could be a butterfly or a small skull and crossbones or even crossed tennis rackets -- can't tell. The better part of the marker looks to be an interlocking capital "G" or "C" overlaying a capital "R" -- that's my best guess. My first thought was maybe "Grand Army of the Republic," but their symbols I've seen are completely different.

I photographed and indexed this cemetery about 10 years ago. My picture of the marker is very similar, although it was leaning against the stone when I photographed it. The middle part is an A and R, there are stars in each upper corner, and appears to be to crossed rifles in the dead center up at the top. He was in the civil war, so my guess is it is in fact a GAR marker.
