Do some graveyards not make the cut? And why?

Do some graveyards not make the cut? And why?

One possible cousin and I were discussing graves of relatives buried in the Pine Grove Mills cemetery in Centre Cty, Pennsylvania. He mentioned not being able to find a grave of a common ancestor using Find A Grave. It turns out that there is an "old" graveyard and a "new" graveyard of the same name located within four blocks of each other. The "new" one is perfectly located and is visible on satellite views. But there is no mention of the old one.

I went to the map and the "old" one is wonderfully located by a brilliant red building (it is the only such building in town). The cemetery sits on Pine Grove Rd (Hwy 45) between Mayes St and S. Kirk St. At each corner there is a church St. Albans Anglican and Pine Grove Presbyterian. Answering numerous genealogy question, I believe one church lists all deceased residents.

Does this cemetery go by some other name?

You asked if some graveyards do not "make the cut". Findagrave is a collaborative effort of volunteers and cemeteries are only added when a volunteer (or many) makes the effort. A very large percentage of United States cemeteries are already listed at Findagrave, so due diligence is a must before creating a new cemetery listing. Once you are certain that it does not already exist, please feel free to contribute, and at any time, feel free to ask for help!

I concur with talbotrail that the Old Pine Grove Mills Cemetery is the one you seek.

YES, it exists. I have been there and photographed it. I thought for sure it had been given some other name because I found it hard to believe the question of finding it through Find A Grave had not come up before. And as I stated, a top satellite view can easily verify that it exists as there is a very bright red colored building across the street from the St Albans church in Pine Grove Mills.
I guess we are talking in circles here. If I were closer to Pennsylvania, I would hop right over and start snapping photos. Problem is I live in Colorado. I would think the people at Centre County Library and Historical Museum in Bellefonte, PA would be more than eager to post a REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEER on their bulletin boards seeking someone to charge forward and begin the project. I believe the Presbyterian Church next to the cemetery opposite St. Albans has a listing of the deceased residing there. Since many of the grave markers are illegible, it is a treasure to have those names already listed somewhere.

Thanks, Dave

"The first rule of writing is not to omit the thing you meant to say."
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

If you want to enlist the help of the people at Centre County Library and Historical Museum in Bellefonte, PA, you should be writing to them. Or are you asking someone here to do that for you? (since you live in Colorado)
- Looking In Trees

P.S. One does not need grave marker photos to add memorials to Findagrave. If the 185 memorials already added to Old Pine Grove Mills Cemetery are not an exhaustive number, the remaining names can be added from the church list you mentioned.

Aha, Looking In Trees, you are saying there is a cemetery called Old Pine Grove Mills with 185 memorials. I wonder why I was not able to find that earlier? Does Findagrave have any type of index? I will have to poke around and look for more clues to the successful navigation of Findagrave. I was being somewhat sarcastic by the question "Do some graveyards not make the cut?" But it came from being unable to find any reference to this graveyard that I had personally visited. It seemed pretty unlikely that a volunteer had not made the effort to include it. It is tied to Boalsburg history, after all. I, apparently, was not using the right name.

In the 2nd post in this thread, talbotrail gave you the direct link to the cemetery listing at Findagrave ... perhaps you couldn't see it from all the way out there in Colorado.

Let's start at the very beginning,
A very good place to start .....

If you read my first email, I was alerted by a fellow genealogy enthusiast, a cousin found by DNA matching, that Find A Grave did not provide any reference to a common Boalsburg ancestor. I made a search and got the same brick wall. Yes, I have clicked on the link provided by talbotrail but I still get no response to plugging in the name Jacob STOVER. I can only conclude that there is no index to the occupants of that graveyard. IS THAT CORRECT? If that is so, then apparently there is plenty of volunteer work to be done at this cemetery. I am thinking of volunteering. I could easily retype all members listed in the Presbyterian church and provide those for inclusion in Find A Grave records. Are you more than a casual visitor to this web site or to this Pennsylvania county? I ask that because your profile shows no research interests. So I take it that you are not actively searching for specific information on your own family tree?
