Suddenly seeing lots of Find a Grave pictures on Ancestry

Suddenly seeing lots of Find a Grave pictures on Ancestry

Has anyone else noticed more Find a Grave photos in Ancestry trees lately? I'm finding that a lot of the "photo hints" I'm getting from Ancestry are photos that were originally posted BY ME on findagrave.com. I always give permission for people to use and share my photos whenever they ask me, but it really bothers me that these photos are showing up on Ancestry without attribution.

I don't think there is any way for people to save your photos with attribution, unless they add it as part of the description of the photo (that is, not like saving something from your tree, even if found through Ancestry).

I understand that, but they need to make a way to. The Find a Grave website says that the use of uploaded photos without permission from the person who took them is not allowed in their terms of use, so at the very least, I would think that Ancestry would include the name of the photographer. These are the kinds of things that led to many people pulling all their photos off of FaG when they were purchased by Ancestry. I would never do that, but I can understand their feelings about having their photographs co-opted.

I agree with you about photo credit. It's a lot of time and effort on your part volunteering to do the work. Whenever I have used a photo off of find a grave (have done it twice) I credited the photographer and post it with a citation and the link back to the photo. More often than not I just use the Ancestry link and save and don't use the photo. Perhaps a suggestion to Ancestry with your concerns about credit. After all you did the work.

Thanks Dan! I feel somewhat selfish to even complain because I really do want people to use my photos if they find them useful. I just wish that Ancestry would come up with a way to import the photo that would attach the photographer's name or email address to it! I'll have to look around Ancestry for a place to make that suggestion!

I also don't mind if my photos are used that is why I am taking them. But it would be nice to get credit for taking the photo

What I have been doing lately is making a public comment on my photographs when I come across them. I say something like "Thanks for sharing. I am the photographer and this photo was originally uploaded by me to Find a Grave at: ..."

I'm trying not to get too worked up about it. I'm sure most people who share a photo don't even realize that they should also be recording and sharing where they found the photograph :/

This is exactly what I am trying to find out today. I found an image on FindAGrave of great great grandparents tombstones. Is the proper procedure to try to contact the person named as photographer in that FaGrave image and ask their permission to attach it to my Ancestry tree?

Also, I am wondering whether I will be ABLE to actually contact the person if the posting is from many years ago. If I can't reach them at all, can I attach the photo and give attribution to the photographer's name as it appears on on FindAGrave, and cite the location on FindAGrave? I am wondering if that is sufficient credit.

I would like to do all of this correctly and not be one of the "bad guys" described in these postings.

Thank you for any advice.

You might also want to check the info on the person who posted. My Find A Grave profile, for instance, includes blanket permission for non-commercial copying and use.
