Re: Byzantine vs. Greek Catholic

Hi,

I noticed your question on the message board at ancestry.com. I am Byzantine Catholic and have a strong church history in my family. Yes, Byzantines used to be called Greek Catholic. They are the same. Simply a change in name. You may find this page very helpful: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Catholic_Churches

The Greek Catholic Church consists of the Eastern Catholic Churches which follow the Byzantine (Constantinopolitan) liturgical tradition and are thus in full communion with the Bishop of Rome, the Pope.

Thank you for the information. I have a picture of the tombstone (it is in my tree pictures). The picture was taken at the place where it was made, but don't know the cemetery where is buried at.

I will try to research with the information you shared with me, and again, I thank you.

Rita

You can't look for Andy in Slovakian church books. Andy is americanized name. In Slovakia they never used Andy. You will find only Andreas (in Latin) or Andras (in Hungarian) and after 1900, in Slovak it will be Ondrej. Same with Mary, you will not find Mary, but Maria.

handy, so than possible he was naturalized before 1906 so thus no place of birth on the record and also no name of a ship, port of departure, date of arrival.
On his SS-5Form he did not put his place of birth either. bummer.

For 1900 census, he had filed papers.

By 1910 he was naturalized.

I did ask her several times to make sure there was nothing other than Austria as for birth location. Yes, I think that she was being very thorough and honest with me. She sounded very kind and sincere.

I found the middle name only on one document and no where else. 1937 on his Soc Sec application. Not sure exactly when it was actually given to him, but at least two of his other brothers had middle names that I've found. The other brothers were all born in America.

handy, don't know what you say. Should you have had the copy of the naturalization sent to you or not. I suppose you trusted the lady that she was being honest in reading the naturalization paper. You do not have any "what if" she was not sure how to read the location and just said Austria?
If he was naturalized before 1906 than yes, no place of birth only country at least the few that I have seen but if he was naturalized after 1906 than yes a place of birth at least the ones I have seen. The naturalization process has changed from back than and it was different for women and young children.

http://www.germanroots.com/naturalizationrecords.html
http://www.archives.gov/research/naturalization/index.html

So when did Andrew take up a middle name Steve? He certainly did not have it in 'old country'.
Not sure what you mean. Up at the top it says, Boston, Mass as arrival location. I was the one that did the research, transcript and sent it there to post. They post Ellis Island records and also other ship immigrations as well that came into other ports. Ellis Island did not exist when my immigrant came to America in 1882. I have a copy of the original ship document that I sent for years ago. Or are you referring to something else?

Thank you...

Bencko, I think it is the same person we are communicating with. It is a beautiful photo of the family. I suggested to "handy" to send a copy of that photo to the TALIANs that show up in Kracunovce's and Svidnik's phone book. It is possible that the Talians in SK could see a resemblance or could add some new information to the researcher.
Zlatica

handy, I'm aware, since we have been corresponding in 2010 about TALLIAN that your ancestor came before NY EI. It is unfortunate that the early arrival manifest did not provide for a place of birth. Was Andrew jr. naturalized by himself?
Was Andrew Steve jr. naturalized before 1906 or after?
The after 1906 naturalization intent and petition requested a precise place of birth. If you are holding his naturalization certificate than yes, no place of birth only country on that paper.

After re-reading your post, I felt that I should also mention that my family did not come into Ellis Island. Here's his immigration record....
Taln, Andreas
age 23, sex male
Port- Boston, MASS
Arrived- 3/1/1882
SS "HELVETIA"
Occupation - Farmer
Birthplace - Austria

I think that Andy, Sr may have died before he completed the citizenship process. He had started the papers though. His son, Andy, Jr was naturalized, but his papers give only his birth country, not the exact location.

Thank you for your interest.

I know that this might seem very odd, but there is a possibility that Andrew, Jr did not know where he was born in Austro/Hungary. Andy, Jr was only 22 when he married and he was merely 29 years old when his father died. Back then, there were no birth certificates and if he was baptized in Austro/Hungary, perhaps no documentation was ever brought over to America with them when they came. It appears that they never really had to give the location of their birth for documents, only the country. They were dirt poor and Andy, Sr started out working in the coal mines. The family (even my grandfather) did not want to talk of the past and likely that was expressed to the children, so no mention of it was made. Andy, Sr couldn’t speak or write English when he arrived in America in 1882. Somehow Andy, Sr managed to pull himself out of the coal mines to get a job in a lumberyard. They moved several times before his death in 1919 that I assume was brought on from the Spanish Flu. His wife, Mary had died about two weeks before him. There was a gap of 12 years between Andy, Jr and his next brother, Thomas, that was born in PA. They never talked about the “old country”. Honestly, it does not really surprise me at all that Andy, Jr might not know where exactly he was born. I feel that there is a good enough chance that the family might have originated from Sarissky Stavnik because I had found the Talian name, many years ago, to have been in that general area about the time that my family left for America on an index at the Radix site on-line. I feel that this is a good place to begin and I’m comfortable that the most likely spelling of their last name in the “old country” was Talian. I would not be the least bit surprised if there were not any Talian’s left there though, but you never know. There had to have been a reason they left and possibly all of the family left, or maybe Andy, Sr was the only one left of the family. I have no idea what trauma might have existed there at that time. I would assume that things had to have been pretty bad to have left their homeland on a ship for a land that they knew nothing about.
Thank you for your research and interest in my family.

The only Talan I found was that first document I found, marriage between Andras Talan, 26 year old, single
In charge of one the King's horse department (they listed his profession)
Born in Nagy Szuha in "county" Presov

Dirlak Maria single
Born in Kežmarok county Presov 24 year old
Daughter of Jakab (bricklayer) and Kullango Maria

And I found her birth in Kežmarok, attached. Father's name is listed as Dirlagh, but it is the same name. But if you are saying the wife's name was not Dirlagh, then this marriage certificate can't be right, unless she died, for example giving birth to a child and he remarried.
It will be a good idea to find emmigration document. Germans were very precise to write names exactly as it was in Slovakia. People couldn't change their names when they came to Ellis Island either. They were detained on Ellis Island until the officials found someone to translate their papers. Only when they became citizens they could change their names. Their first names were sometime translated to English, that's why Andreas (in Latin) or Andras (in Hungarian) were translated as Andy or Andrew.
We will never find Andy listed in any church records in Slovakia, it will be Andreas or Andras. I was looking in Kežmarok church records to see if they moved from Nagy Szaha and maybe had a child there, but I couldn't find it there either.

I researched all the online cemeteries in Šariš region that I could find and I didn't find any families with the name of Talan burried there. That doesn't mean they are not Talans there. It just means the register doesn't show them. Some cemeteries don't have graves listed older than 1880-1890.
Yes, I'm in the process of sending you actual documents so that you can view them. My ancestors held their info close to their chest it seemed. No one talked about the "old country" and it seemed that no one really cared much to know anything either back then. I can only imagine that it was a horrible experience for them to go through and they just wanted to put it behind them and not speak of it. No one seems to have saved any documents or many photos. It's been a very difficult line to research.

Andrew Steve Talian was born Oct 17 1880, son of Andrew and Mary Talian. Nothing that I've found yet shows where he was born other than Czechoslovakia or Slovak or Austria/Hungary. I was pretty young when he died and at that time did not have any interest in genealogy. I imagine that he was baptized in the "old country", but I have yet to find a baptism for him. Now that maybe I have a start on a possible location, I can look further. I have traveled to Monessen and visited the church there in hopes of getting more info, but all that they had was the death record for Andrew (born Apr 1858). I have obits and nothing mentioned there. I've checked with cemeteries and nothing there for a maiden name or where they were born. Their other four son's were baptised in the Catholic church in various areas near to Pittsburg, PA, but they don't seem to be able to find the records. I'm thinking that it might be because of the language issue and so many different variations of the spelling of the last name on documents. I wish that I could look through the PA Catholic Church records myself, but they would not allow me to do so when I went there trying to find things out about 10 years ago. I won't give up. I keep trying and hoping that something will arise one day. Thank you....

You're welcome. How old was the son who was born in "old country" that came to America? Depending on his age, I sort of want to think that he would know it. I would have thought that the church baptismal record of the second child would have a mother's maiden name.

Three sons gave three different answers as to her maiden name on different documents. The oldest son gave the maiden name of Nagy, so this one might be correct, but I have no way to know for sure as of yet. The other two younger brothers gave her maiden name as Barnes and Movak on other documents.

Saris on the same line or S on top of Saris but underneath.

Šarišské Sokolovce [ šariš ]
1773 Tolcsemes, Tolcžemess, 1786 Tölcschelmesch, 1808 Tölcsemes, Tolčemeš, 1863–1900 Tolcsemes, 1902 Tolcsemescsipkés, 1907–1913 Tótselymes, 1920 Tolčemeš, Toučemeš Čipkoš, 1927–1948 Tolčemeš, 1948– Šarišské Sokolovce [all the names this location was known by]

Šarišský Štiavnik [ šariš ]
1773 Scavnik, Sczawnik, 1786 Stawnik, 1808 Savnik, Schawnik, Ssčawník, Ssťawník, 1863, 1877 Scsavnik, 1873 Schavnyik, 1888–1902 Scsavnyik, 1907–1913 Sósfüred, 1920 Štiavnik, Ščavník, 1927–1946 Šťavník, 1946– Šarišský Štiavnik

I would sort of look into the church records of the locations where in 1995 surname TALIAN was the most found. Of course, that is no 100% that your ancestor was from one of the locations. Process of elimination.
PROČ, okr. PREŠOV – 18×;
PREŠOV, okr. PREŠOV – 11×;
KAPUŠANY, okr. PREŠOV – 10×;
Another suggestion would be to go thru the phone book.
The phone area code 051 and 054 would be in Saris region.
http://telefonny.zoznam.sk/talian/slovensko/predvolba=051/
http://telefonny.zoznam.sk/talian/slovensko/predvolba=054/

Being that TALIAN shows up in Proc's phone book as well as being the location in 1995 with the most Talians, maybe you should go thru that location's church records.

Proc and Kracunovce not far from each other.
http://www.mapy.cz/#x=21.416722&y=49.094759&z=12&amp...

Yes, the name is pronounced as Italian, without the I. I've been told that Talian means Italian man, so my ancestors may have came out of Italy into Slovakia at one point in time, but I have no proof of this.

I can't seem to read the Slovak name residing next door for sure. I'll see if I can look up what might have been transcribed for this name. My Talian family lived in the Pittsburg area before moving to Monessen. I'll have to look at the 1900 census to see if there's a person with the 1920 census spelling of Fers or Fero or Firo or Firs spelling living near to them there for 1900. Unfortunately there was no 1890 census and they arrived after the 1880 census, so the first census that I have for them was 1900 and it lists them as from Italy! I know this was an error on the part of the census taker. I am certain that I have the correct family. The family name on this 1900 census was listed as ATALAN. That was the most difficult of all census records to find.

Thank you for your input!

handy

The manifests were written at the port of departure by a shipping clerk from a document that our ancestor presented to the clerk. Yes, transcribing errors occured there as well as when they were transcribed in US.

try http://ivona.com for pronounciation.
TALIAN similar to English ITALIAN.

On the census Andry/Andrej/Andrew/Andras/Andreas has Pa-first paper notation but most likely no place of birth only country's name. What is the surname of the "Slovaks" that are above the TALIAN family on the census.

No, not for certain. The sons gave several different last names for Maria on different documents. Obviously they seemed to not have a clue for sure. The oldest son listed her last name as Maria Nagy, my grandfather listed her name as Mary Barnes. The 2nd son listed her name as Marie Movak. I haven't a clue for sure what her maiden name was for certain.

Very common for names to be misspelled on immigration records. I'm comfortably sure that this is my Andreas Talian. The way the name is pronounced is two sylables ... Tal-N This is how my dad pronounced it and it is likely how Andreas pronounced it when he boarded the ship. So that is how they recorded it. Also census record gives that date as year of arrival. My Andreas could not speak English when he came to America, so this only added to the problems. Please see attachments.

Andreas' (born April 1858) church death certificate shows that he was from Saris. I've attached that document. Andreas' legal death certificate says Czecko Slovak with father's name given as Andy Talian. Mother's name is listed as unknown. Both of his parents on his death certificate are also stated as born in Czecko Slovak.

It's a puzzle for sure! Thanks for the interest and help.
