The family arrived NY EI but the location was not transcribed correctly. There is no location Dartfor. To me it looks more like Bartfa - Bardejov, Slovakia.

Thank you for your reply.

The "Slovak Pride" web site was the first place I checked sine I lived in Homestead. According to the early censuses (1880-1910) many Eastern Europeans settled in Homestead to work in the steel mills. Martin Svjantek was one of those immigrants. The 1910 census lists his date of immigration as 1885. It is also the first time his name appears in Homestead/Munhall area.

Unfortunately, the management at the mill changed his last name wither because Martin could not read/write English or more likely management could not speak/write Slovak; therefore he became "Martin Martin." The name was never legally changed until his death in 1929.

All Martin's children were known as "Martin" but listed on the census as Svjantek. On the family burial plot the name is listed as "Sviantek" which was supposedly taken from a pocket wartch that one of Martin's children had in his possession.

Ellis Island was not in existance when Martin Svjantek immigrated to the U.S. in 1885 or 1886.

Are you related to any Svjanteks who immigrated to the U.S.?

You're welcome mary_ellen_martin1
No relation to SVJANTEK/SVIANTEK.

So your ancestor came thru www.castlegarden.org or Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia or Canada's port.

Look also from Martin arriving as Marton - Hungarian for Martin.

This is my husband's family. I learned about the name change a week before we were married when his aunt passed away. It has bugged me ever since. None of his siblings were curious as to the family ancestry.

Martin (Svjantek) Martin raised his children in the Roman Catholic religion. Martin was married here in Homestead,PA. I have a picture of he and his wife on their wedding day. She is wearing a "vine" on her veil. What would be the main church his family would have him baptized in? The LDS (Church of the Latter Day Saints aka Mormons) has a free family website that has scanned documents for foreign countries.

If you were born in 1869, I am thinking the priest travelled to each small towm maybe once every month or two or even three. On the other hand, the family may have travelled to the larger town where the church was located every several months or for things like ho lidays or baptisms. Any thoughts or churches copme to mind?

Thanks to Mary Ellen Martin for your posting of 07/16/2012 in which you provided a listing of surnames for Smilno. Many of those names are familiar to me. Both my parents came from Smilno in the 1930's.

In 1962 I visited relatives in Yonkers,NY. I met a butcher named John Swantek (spelling close to Svjantek, many Europeans interchange v & w). You may have relatives in NY with Swantek name.

I am not related to a Svjantek / Swantek.
