Byzantine vs. Greek Catholic

Hi,
I am doing some research in church records for Výrava (Medzilaborce District) in Slovakia. I am told the people I am looking for were Byzantine Catholic. I assumed this meant Greek Catholic. I am told that they are not the same. The only records I find for the area are the following: Orthodox, Greek Catholic, Roman Catholic, Evangelical, Evangelical Reformed, and Jewish. Can anyone tell me if Byzantine is the same as Greek Catholic for this area of the world? I don't find who I am looking for in the Greek Catholic records, so maybe they are right and I should be looking in different church records.
Thanks so much!
-A

Hi,

I noticed your question on the message board at ancestry.com. I am Byzantine Catholic and have a strong church history in my family. Yes, Byzantines used to be called Greek Catholic. They are the same. Simply a change in name. You may find this page very helpful: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Catholic_Churches

The Greek Catholic Church consists of the Eastern Catholic Churches which follow the Byzantine (Constantinopolitan) liturgical tradition and are thus in full communion with the Bishop of Rome, the Pope.
