Recycling in cemeteries

Someone just told me that German cemeteries recycle Cemetary plots after 25 years. Is this customary? And what happens to the remains? I had family members that were living in Herrenberg and thought I would see if I could find their burial place that I would find someone to take pictures for me. Does anyone know?

Joanne

cemetery info

Can someone clarify.....my understanding of burials in Germany, the grave sites are only rented for a period of time 20-50 yrs(various sites indicate 20-30;30-40;30-50 yrs)
The deceased are not embalmed, so that natural decay takes place, does this mean there is nothing left? If there is (any remaining) then what happens to the remaining body? I am trying to understand, as my ancestors (before 1880's) would have been living and died in Germany.

Does the same occur in Poland, which was formerly part of Germany?

How would one go about locating a village; town that their ancestors lived, died in? It is my understanding that during WWII the records were destoryed, yet I have heard some may still exist in churches in both Germany and now Poland the part that was formerly Germany.

Thank you

Cathy;Say hi to Wally for me. This is Ron Zeien(son of William A.). Sylvester was my Godfather. What a wonderful surprise to hear from you. My wife Linda and I have been working on our ancestry tree for quite some time, but not much at a time. We have the family back to Jacob Zeyen at about 1670 birth in Zermullen. I posted that note in 2012 hoping to add to the info that we already had. We finaly joined Ancestry a month ago. We tried to concentrate only on our direct lineage, so we passed up a lot of the families information. We have since started to form the tree and print what we have. I have prior commitments so we are going to let Ancestry expire for now. I would appreciate anything that you would be willing to share. After about a month of my forum post, I got a reply from a school teacher, Karl Josef Tonner, that teaches in Kelberg. I was elated. He gave me 37 pages of decendency in Germany. However, we still could't get past Jacob. Last fall, Lin and I took a week long drive into Wisc. and down into Iowa and just before we came back, I just had to stop to talk to some of the Zeien's there. I know that we are related, but the tie has to happen in the early 1800's and before. That family didn't emmigrate until 1875. This fall, Lin and I are taking a trip to Germany. We are planning on about a 3 week trip. We are very excited. If I remember correctly, didn't you make that trip? I want to see the areas that they are from. Oh by the way, if you are not Wally's wife, I'm going to be very embarassed. Thank you so very much, Cathy, and have a great day. -Ron- zeienron@gmail.com

My husband's mother was Gertrude Zeien, and she is a descendant of Johann Joseph Zeien and Maria Magdalena Gitzen, of Zurmullen, Germany. I have shared my research data with many others, and now it is posted on line in ancestry.com files. I have an extensive file on many different branches of this family and I have done all the original research for the family, using the LDS films at the Family History Center. Re: the descending families, I have much information and would be willing to share it.
From which branch of the family are you descended?
Cathy Girgen
wgirgen@aol.com

My cousin is applying for the DAR through the Powell lineage and she would be interested in talking with you with regards to Upson's mother, Elizabeth. Can you contact her at springerpc@msn.com? She does not use Ancestry. Thanks, in advance. DBalderson2166

Hi Sherri! Perhaps we are cousins :O)

John Pflugfelder (b. 1813) and Rose (b. 1827) are my 3xGreat Grandparents. They emigrated from Wurttemberg, Germany to Philadelphia. I'm not sure if together or not. I haven't found a marriage record - yet.

It threw me off, but I found that the family appears on the 1870 census, but their names were butchered. Rose appears as Rebecca. There were 6 children: Rosina, John, Caroline, Philip, Henry, and Lizzie (my 2xgreat Grandmother).

Rose died on Jan 10, 1898. Her funeral services were held at her son-in-law's house, Abner Jones (he married Rosina). She is buried at Glenwood Cemetery (which has been moved out of Philadelphia).

I'm not sure about John Pflugfelder. There is another man with the same name and almost the same birth year in the Philadelphia area. I'm still trying to work that out. We do know however from Rose's obit that she was the widow of John Pflugfelder.

Hope this information helps!

Regards,

Heather

Hi! It´s been more than a year since you posted your question about cemeteries in the Zeltingen area, better late than never, I suppose- here´s another reply! We spent a week there recently, and, though not searching for any cemeteries, we almost stumbled across one, in the hills above the villages. http://www.panoramio.com/photo/1384509 shows a picture from the site. It is almost certainely jewish, and no longer in "use". I saw graves with burial-dates in the 1920´s.
Best regards, Magnus Posse. (Sweden)

Hello all,

I can confirm that. The graves are "rented" for a period of time (usually 30-40 years) and if the descendents do not pay for an "extention period", the grave will be levelled.

Sad side effect:
The "rental time" counts from the first reantal date. No matter if someone is burried there or not. If someone wants to reserve a grave during his live time (e.g. for him/her and the spouse) the time is already ticking from that moment.
Especially in case of a double/couple graves this might get complicate if the spouse dies decades after the partner.

Best Regards
Thomas

PS: needless to mention that the grave "fee" and the maximum duration time depends on the size of the town, the grave yard and the number of available graves.
Does anyone have any information on Robert and Katrina Gerhart & their daughter, Augusta, who was born in Albafelt, Germany? They immigrated to Galveston, Texas in 1845 through the port at Antwerp, Belgum. Immigration records list their point of origin as Walbroel, Germany near Colonge.

I have excellent photos of Katrina and Augusta, but none of Robert and no family history after they left Germany. I am interested in Katrina's maiden name, her family, and Robert's family in Germany.

Any help would be appreciated.

That being said relations are much more relaxed than they were so it might be worth googling up Szczecin and seeing if they have a contact number for information. It was a place which was well fought over in the last days of WW2 but not all records disappeared. Good luck.

I am presuming they died in that same place but have no proof. I am also looking for a record of their son, Bernardus b. 13 March 1868. I have only found his birth record over there so far.

Thanks again, Shirley

The infos available online are:
Batchnumber: M99190-4
Groom's Name: Conradum Scherrer
Bride's Name: Mariam Elisbetham Fischer
Marriage Date: 03 Jul 1865
Marriage Place: Roemisch-Katholische,Hoerdt,Pfalz,Bavaria

About Hoerdt:
Since end of WWII the district 'Pfalz' is no longer an area of Bavaria, since then its in Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate).

About graves in Germany:
Graves are usually rented for a certain period of time, maybe 15 to 40 years. The length of time that a grave can be 'leased' varies from place to place in Germany. So don't be surprised to discover that you cannot find the grave
of an ancestor or other family member, even if that person is known to have died and been buried there.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards
Bea
