Cemetery Photography Do's and Don't's

I'm new to cemetery photography and I'm wondering if there are any tips, words of advice, or just any equipment I should take with me. I don't want to actually touch them or put anything on them. Also are there any photoshop tips for bringing out letters and numbers in images? I've done a bit through search but haven't seen a lot of this talked about.

Administrators Message Please Read

This board is for posting photos and for queries about obtaining a photo. It is NOT for advertising other sites that contain photos.

This board is NOT a dumping ground for DUPLICATE posts and advertising.
All such posts will be deleted by Board Admin or staff.

Some board rules/guidelines:

1. All CEMETERY, BURIAL or OBITUARY queries must be directed to the specific boards for these categories.

http://boards.ancestry.com/topics.cemetery/mb.ashx
http://boards.ancestry.com/topics.researchresources.lookups
http://boards.ancestry.com/topics.obits2/mb.ashx

2. MUST mention the country, state, county or town and the ANCESTOR in the message. The name of the cemetery should also be listed.

3. Do NOT put links to commercial sites in your message. Commercial sites can contain advertising, selling merchandise, or even those that you have to join in order to post or look at. If you aren't sure, then don't put it in the message.

3. Do NOT post identifiable information about LIVING people without their direct consent; this includes email addresses, snail mail addresses, their full name or location. - Any such messages posted on this board will be moved or deleted.

3. Do NOT post a long stream of surnames that you are researching in the surname field or in the message itself, unless your message is about those surnames. This causes false hits for those using the search engine.

4. Do NOT post your message all in caps, this is considered shouting and is poor "netiquette".

5. Posting thank you's while nice and are appreciated, they do not contain any genealogical information and will be deleted after a day or two.

6. Do NOT post "new email address" messages, these are not necessary because you can change your email address by going into your profile. These messages will be deleted.

7. Last but not least, to find out more information about posting to the boards you can follow the board guidelines and board faq's found at the bottom of all message board pages.

Thank you,
Rene'
board administrator
I would be happy to do this for you. Do you happen to know which cemetary he is in? There are several in town. If not I can call around first. Birth and death dates will be helpful when I inquire with the office for the location.

Thank you.

I did not read through all the replies that you received, so this might already be posted. It was suggested to me, to hold a piece of tracing paper against the inscription on the headstone. Using a pencil, go lightly across the tracing paper and the inscription will come out on the tracing paper. Hope this helps.

Use tin foil!!!

I found this idea on a site and have used it with great results.

Take a piece of tin foil from a roll and a soft cloth with you (like an old t-shirt---something with a flat weave, not a towel). You can wrap the foil around the stone and tape the two edges in the back. DON'T tape to the stone. That should secure it well enough that you are able to take the cloth and wipe over the stone gently. The foil will recede into the etched wording and you can rub those a little extra to bring out the full effect. Take a photo of the stone with the foil on it and you will have your inscription. Then remove the foil and photograph it again for the actual view of the stone. The foil can be used several times if you use the heavy duty type. I wouldn't recommend cheap, thin foil.
