Cemetery Photography Do's and Don't's

I'm new to cemetery photography and I'm wondering if there are any tips, words of advice, or just any equipment I should take with me. I don't want to actually touch them or put anything on them. Also are there any photoshop tips for bringing out letters and numbers in images? I've done a bit through search but haven't seen a lot of this talked about.

Go to the Find A Grave website and sign up... put in a request for photos... and a volunteer will take them for you at no cost. Hope you have lots of luck finding your family.

I know several of the Herchman family members in Vernon and Electra, Texas. Electra is half way between Vernon and Wichita Falls, Tx. I will talk to them and see if I can find a location for these stones and any other info. I am familiar with the Eastview Cemetery in Vernon, Tx, my father is buried there along with some other family members.

Questions: Do you have dads death cert.? The name of the cemetery should be on the death cert. Do you have his birth date? death date? His fathers name and mothers name should be on the death cert. along with the informant-that is the person that gave the info at the funeral home.
What is your mothers maiden name? Dads mothers maiden name?

I have a picture of James Hardy's gravestone from Langton Herring in Dorset(not brilliant).

He was born 1782 and dies 6th Sept 1814. His son is buried here aged 2 (William). His wife was Hannah.

I think there is a relationship here but cannot confirm this on my tree yet.

Rookwood Cemetry grave site photo NSW

I did not read through all the replies that you received, so this might already be posted. It was suggested to me, to hold a piece of tracing paper against the inscription on the headstone. Using a pencil, go lightly across the tracing paper and the inscription will come out on the tracing paper. Hope this helps.

Use tin foil!!!

I found this idea on a site and have used it with great results.

Take a piece of tin foil from a roll and a soft cloth with you (like an old t-shirt---something with a flat weave, not a towel). You can wrap the foil around the stone and tape the two edges in the back. DON'T tape to the stone. That should secure it well enough that you are able to take the cloth and wipe over the stone gently. The foil will recede into the etched wording and you can rub those a little extra to bring out the full effect. Take a photo of the stone with the foil on it and you will have your inscription. Then remove the foil and photograph it again for the actual view of the stone. The foil can be used several times if you use the heavy duty type. I wouldn't recommend cheap, thin foil.

I think this lady is a little overprotective. Is she a guard or something? If the cemetery is open to the public I don't see how they would stop you. Besides most of the family members are probably dead, too.

While visiting Scioto Burial Park in Rushtown/McDermott,OH I found this grave which was odd because I wasn't looking for Spriggs, but it is my maiden name. I know nothing of Jane Spriggs but would like for a descendant to claim her. The information on her tombstone is Jane Spriggs born 4 March 1885, died 14 March 1926. I am trying to enclose a photo.

I just found your post. I live in Albany Missouri and our library has pictures of the Kent and Miller Cemetery's. Go to carnegie.lib.mo.us/ hit the genealogy icon, on the left side, and then hit the "genealogy holdings at the Carnegie Public Library". It has a list of all the cemeteries they have pictures of.
